On to the postseason

It was painful to watch this one slip away, but there might not be anyone in the country better in the last two minutes than Georgetown, so seeing them pull it out at home and on Senior Day wasn't exactly maddening. That said, I was approximately 101.3% positive that Jerry Smith's first made three-pointer of the day was going to tie it up. Mama said there'd be days like this I suppose.

So now it's on to Gotham and likely the winner of Wednesday's 7/10 game between (perhaps) Pitt and Seton Hall. The Panthers have been to the Big East title game in six of the last seven years, and eliminated Louisville from the tournament in each of the Cardinals' first two trips to MSG. Revenge would also be a theme if the Pirates - who knocked off the Cards by ten in Newark - were to advance.

Exciting times are just around the corner. Here's to a new nine-game winning streak.

Enjoy your Saturday.

Go Cards.

Heck of a game
Count me in as another that was sure Jerry's last one was going to drop.

Oh well, heck of a game and you can't be upset about the performance given the circumstances.

One thing to be happy about with the loss - next game is now 7 PM Thursday instead of noon. I wouldn't have been able to watch at noon, so I'm sort of happy.  :)

Musberger has to be hammered
Also, UCLA is winning like 30-7 when I'm watching, and apparently just getting destroyed when I'm not.

me neither
I had a sinking feeling all week that GTown was going to be ready to play. And it sounds like they were. Ever the optimist I can see some good coming of this loss.
a) we weren't going to secure  1 seed. No way, no how.
b) this loss gets the teams' feet back on the ground (a 19-game win streak can be a heavy load)
c) It also gives Pitino some solid talking points and a group that will be very willing to listen.
d) If we win the BEt we are still in a good place to snatch a 2 seed.
Go Cards!

Hmm
Thought it was illegal to shoot the ball over the backboard? Apparently the rulebook doesn't apply to UCLA in the last 15 seconds of games.

Shot
I saw a kid from USC shoot one like that 10 or 15 years ago that the disqualified because it was over the backboard.  He was  kid who had transfered from UK.

Regression
Looked like every single one of our losses tonight
  1. Missed threes, and lots of 'em
  2. Terrible FT shooting
I'm really at a loss on this team right now. Could be a decent run, or could be another first weekend exit. If we play like today again, I'll go with the latter.

I dont think so...
The thing about this loss that is encouraging- We played pretty outstanding D all night, forcing a ton of turnovers.  That is a sign of maturity.  We were not hitting shots at all and we had made a ton of turnovers.  The fact is that we stayed in this game cuz we played great defense.  Our offense was stagnant and stupid until the middle of the second half.  Amidst all that, we lost to a top ten G'Town team by 3 on their senior night.  Plus we shot our FT's like we had something stuck up our butts.

Even more encouraging- Derrick Caracter played like a monster for a stretch in the second half.  He had like 3 steals (one was a beautiful step-around on Hibbert which ended in him running down the floor and scoring a layup), 3 strong takes to the basket resulting in fouls, and some offensive boards and a ton of hustle overall.

DC - sort of
He gave exactly 100%.  Both ends, running the floor.  Then mid-sprint he got gassed and immediately and visibly gave up.  Even Raftery saw it.  5 seconds later he can't participate in the offensive set or rebound, 5 seconds after that he is asking to come out, and 10 seconds after that he barely managed to flex his wrists playing toreador to that spin move.

2-4 point swing and a timeout -- both of which might have come in handy later.  (In a close game, there are about 120 such 2-4 point swings, like each open 3 Jerry missed, each TWill rocket that went into the upper deck, ...)

So, I was pleased at the effort, but a little more self-awareness would have helped him pace himself and some conditioning commitment would have made that less necessary.
