I'm at home tonight..
....for various reasons.

anyone else not at the hall, but wishing it were so?

Free throws....
..Syracuse has not missed one, and they are getting to the line a ton.

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 7:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No kidding
A BS call against T-Will and one or two others haven't helped. I don't like to carp about the officiating, but it's running against us right now.

by mabake02 on Feb 18, 2008 7:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

T-Will...
Seems to have lost confidence in his jumper. Didn't even look to shoot the three on our last possession.

by mabake02 on Feb 18, 2008 7:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Will Scott has one job
...and it's not missing threes.

The Whole team
seems to have lost their confidence

by NextYear on Feb 18, 2008 7:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They are thinking too much....
they are playing well against the zone, but they are missing their open shots.

Also, they are letting them play down low, so that's not helping.

When DP and Jerry get back in, that will help.

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 7:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously
If he's missing wide open 3's, why exactly is he in there?

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 7:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Did Preston do something?
I didn't see him do anything seriously dumb-- anyone know why he's on the bench? Only guess is that Coach P thinks Will can help shoot the 3 pretty well, but last time I looked he was only hitting about 29%.

Awesome.

WILL SCOTT
seriously get that guy out of there.

DC is so star-crossed with those fouls.  They don't call over the back and then DC gets the foul called on him.

Although just coming down into the lane, seeing the defender, and slamming into him was probably a dumb play.

Break
I'm not sure I can think of a worse 2-on-1 scenario than Scott and Palacios with Donte Greene defending.

The fact that we scored is a minor miracle.

These fouls
Can Syracuse start the 2nd half in the bonus?

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 7:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'll take a tie game...
...after this ugly first half...15 minutes without DP.

Also, we can't buy a bucket.  Nor can they -- the only difference is the free throws.  Hopefully our first 6 fouls are all on the floor, so we don't give them shots the whole time.

Arrrgh.   We should still win by 8.

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 7:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

half time
got to admit - passing looked sharp.
but we've got to get more shots to fall. and we definitely have to keep Scott on the pine.
this was never going to be a blowout, so it's good that we're knotted up at the half considering the folks we have nursing foul trouble.

tie-lose
I love watching the boys, but games like this drive me nuts. If we win, well, great, we were supposed to and we needed to. If we don't then I'll be miserable until Sunday. I much prefer the Pitt, ND, GTown matchups to this.

Thanks big east schedule makers!

Dream line-up
T-will -- point on offense (3 on D)
knowles
Jerry
DC
DP

tell me that wouldn't be fun to watch?

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 8:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I like it
I expected to see TWill at the point in the second half (isn't that what we did to SU last season?).  Against the zone, however, I like McGee or Sosa on offense.

Padgett lip reading
The last time Padgett went to the bench, they showed him on TV after he sat down. I'm not much of a lip reader, but this was clear - his words "that foul was bullshit". :)

by cmb on Feb 18, 2008 8:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I believe it was
"That was a bullshit foul."

David rules.

ya gotta
love a TWill dunk. The man makes a statement.

by ericdedwar on Feb 18, 2008 8:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What a dunk!
But they still can't run the fast break.  Gotta pass that ball to Sosa and then let him give it right back.

But wow, what a sick dunk.

by CardsFan922 on Feb 18, 2008 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I thought the same thing as it was happening
But the reality is Sosa wouldn't have given it back, he would have gotten fouled, and then probably would have missed at least one free-throw.

by Mike Rutherford on Feb 18, 2008 8:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you're right
mighta been a "smarter" play. But TWill knew he had it. And Sosa can't complain considering how much he loves the way the ball feels in his hands.

We should be blowing them out...
....it seemed like it was over when we got up 10.  A couple dumb plays, DC playing safe in the middle, and they are within 6 with the ball.

Syracuse is so tired.  But playing the zone they are able to rest.

Flop City
Boy I'm cranky.

I don't understand
The switch to man out of the timeout. Pitino yelled at Earl for not being there with help, but his man took him out of the play so there was really nothing Derrick could have done.

by Mike Rutherford on Feb 18, 2008 8:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If I am getting the play right ...
Pitino was mad at DC for fronting his man.  And he's right -- that was dumb.  As strong as DC is, he let himself get pushed out of position a couple of times on D.

by 83fan on Feb 18, 2008 9:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

WOW
2 point game, 2 minutes to go. Cuse has clawed their way back.  Then the daggers:

T-will with the baseline J, hurry Harris into a turn over, Jerry with the great hustle play to keep the ball on our side, T-will the great drive/dish to McGee for the open 3.

Game over. Wow.

I think this makes up for all our "blow-outs that looked too close" -- the blow-out that was really much closer.

50 points
My word. First time they've been held under 60 all year.

Fantastic finish
How much did our depth contribute? Great possession leading to McGee's three. We made good decisions when it came down to it on the last several trips.

The last two games have shown we need Padgett to stay out of foul trouble.

Digger Phelps is a blowhard
He shrugged off our game-ending run by saying it happened because:

"That's just because Syracuse got out of focus."

Hey, Genius Patrol: Their loss of focus cost them the game.

What a douchebag.

by mabake02 on Feb 18, 2008 9:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You just can't listen
If you listen to Digger and and put any percent of stock in his opinion, then what he says is going to bother you. If you don't listen to what he says and come to terms with the fact that he's just a talking guy on TV who doesn't follow college basketball as closely as you do, then you'll sleep much better at night.

Also
I loved the way he dissed UL's finish, while cooly glossing over the fact that UCONN barely squeaked by a legitimately bad team in South Florida in their last game. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, but it's hard to get a good look when you're up under their nuts.

Excellent points
.... in both cases. I guess I was just worked up having watched us finish so well :)

Digger Phelps
Did he ever take Notre Dame to a Final Four?
(Please - matching your pen/marker to your outfit? That is so girlish)  That was really a wise crack he made about SU just losing their focus......what does he know anyway?

by Linda on Feb 18, 2008 9:10 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

digger
he's an idiot. But he did make the final four.
I agree with Mike, he's just moving his lips. And it's fun for him and others to take UConn. Especially since UConn will probably win the Big East. But you'll notice he came shy of saying UConn would win the big east tourney. Cause he can't bring himself to say that they will beat UL or GTown in MSG. So he basically covered his ass.

Thoughts on the game
Preston = $20 in the pocket of your winter pants that you haven't worn in 8 months.  I'm sure I am stealing that from someone, but it's still true and bares repeating.

I really enjoy playing Big East basketball.  I mean this wasn't a marque conference matchup and yet it was a very fun game and atmosphere.  I also like the physical nature of the game, but I wonder how it might hurt conference teams in the NCAA (how many fouls did our post players commit against Texas A&M last year?).

The team is looking real good if you ask me.

Just back from the game
Cuse has some real athletes

Their length and active zone kept us out of the middle

and we couldn't hit from outside

BUT

we won a tough, hard fought game

out-rebounded them badly

DC contributed some for a change

and T Will's swooping dunk in heavy traffic

had a Doctor's signature on it!

Tonight
The crowd was dead tonight, it was boring being there.

Will Scott still sucks.

Most impressive dunk I've ever seen by T-Will, flying away from the basket while posterizing someone was amazing.

Refs were horrible.

Oh, and Will Scott sucks.

Officials
The Big East really should institute a mandatory retirement age for their officials.  Some of them are way too old.  Burr needs to be put out to pasture.  I think that guy called games back in the peach basket days.

They got it hard from the crowd all game long.  I think that's why the crowd seemed "out of it". They were too busy with the horrible officating to really cheer the team.  It wasn't just the foul calls, they missed several travels and carries.  That's the easy stuff to call and if they couldn't do that right, they don't have a prayer on the foul calls.

I agree about Will Scott.  He was in there for one reason and one reason only:  knock down the 3 and he's not getting it done.

Go Cards!
