Connecticut 69, Louisville 67

This one is going to sting until at least Saturday.

It's easy to say that we lost on the road to a hot team and move on, but our next game will be played in February, meaning missed opportunities like this one are becoming more and more crucial.

Still, if Juan Palacios pushes the game's final shot just a touch harder, it banks in and we're all laughing about his decision to step back and go for the game-winner, and the dozens of problems with the team that are being thrown around right now suddenly don't exist.

Basketball is a strange, strange game.

Not calling a timeout in a last-second situation has always been Rick Pitino's style, and I suppose we can't criticize it now if we didn't after last year's Big East Tournament game against West Virginia, or any of the buzzer beaters in Milwaukee. But what we can criticize is Pitino's increasingly inexplicable preference of Will Scott over Preston Knowles. I'm not saying that the kid should see 15-20 minutes a game, but when Jerry Smith needs a breather it simply has got to be Knowles who takes his place.

This was without a doubt the best overall performance Edgar Sosa has given this season. With the exception of a 30-second stretch where Bad Edgar had his shot blocked by Hasheem Thabeet, failed to give the ball up on a 2-on-1 break, and then missed two free-throws, this was the point guard that can make us the best team possible. He made the extra pass, created shots by getting into the lane, and took shots when they were there for the taking. It was a very encouraging night in this respect.

Despite Sosa's surprisingly positive performance, this team is going to struggle to beat anyone of any merit when both Terrence Williams and Earl Clark play poorly, and they did not play well on Monday night. The two combined to go 4-of-18 from the field and 2-for-11 from the three, but more disappointing than that was the fact that they each pulled down only two rebounds and that the younger of the two went through extended stretches where he appeared lethargic on the defensive end. I understand that Uconn is going to limit ordinarily productive glass-eaters, but just two boards from either of these guys against anyone is unacceptable.

I thought the biggest moment in the game was the no-call when A.J. Price shoved Knowles off in order to make a press-breaking pass, and Hasheem Thabeet ended the sequence with a dunk to make the score 67-63. It was an absolute momentum killer, but you can't say it cost Louisville the game when the Cards missed three free-throws in the last two minutes and ultimately lost by a bucket. Perhaps someone ought to find the number of that free-throw expert that Calhoun brought in after last season.

This is a very tough loss to swallow, but dwelling on the past is the kiss of death in this league, and all of the sudden Saturday's game doesn't look like nearly the gimmie it did ten days ago.

Frustrating
No other way to describe it.

I mean, on paper, a 2-point loss to UConn on the road, with a chance to win at the buzzer, considering how awful we played and how hot UConn is right now, is not a terrible loss.

And eventually all these "good" losses will equal something right?  Right?

All we have to do is win out and we're in a BCS game.

Oh, wait.

Couple things...
1.) Big East officiating continues to be the absolute worst in both football and basketball. While the Cards got just as many breaks as they did screw-jobs, overall the zebras were inconsistent and mostly clueless.

2.) Wow. I'll give Calhoun credit. He sure knows how to recruit freakishly athletic shot blockers, huh? They've been the best for 5-6 years running  now and it really showed. We seemed to get tentative/meek around the rim, and for good reason I guess. Bright spot: DC. I didn't think he would be able to bully Thabeet down low, but he did consistently whenever he got the ball, which he should have gotten much more often. Wished he would have faced up and abused the Big Man Wish with his quickness, but I guess that wasn't part of the attack plan.

Bottom line... damn, I really wanted this one, as contenders seem to pull these types of games out on the road, but we're not quite there yet. This squad will have plenty of chances to prove its mettle over the next month and a half, much like last year. Here we go...

oh yeah, one more...
3.) It seems like EVERY single three that Earl misses is just 1-2 inches long off the back iron... obviously, 1-2 inches can be quite significant in the game of hoops, BUT assuming he comes back next year (please Lord), with the extended three-point line, I expect him to shoot 70% from downtown.

mmmm... this kool-aid sure is tasty.

Good Things/ Bad things
We lost to a team that beat us by getting us to play they wanted us too. We shot 33 threes, exactly how they needed us to play.

Teebet is an absolute eraser in the low post, that effect killed our dribble-drive guard play from Edgar and Twill. However, it did not kill our inside-out low post-wing play.
Watch for adjustments in our play in the game against Georgetown and Hibbert or a lack there of.  We also failed to capitalize on his absence during the latter part of the first half.

This game showed how important driving is to our game.

How weird was it when Jerry hit that three to bring us to down two and whole crowd was silent? It felt like it almost wasn't an important play.

More of the Same
Same bad shot selection, same bad substitutions, same bad turnovers, same missed free throws. We just ain't a top Big East team. Will end up right in the middle of the pack by conferences's end. Exactly where we belong.
Go Cards!

Hmm.
Self hate is only cool if you're working the universe on the principle of reverse psychology. You're treading dangerously close to actually disparaging the team, which isn't going to help at all.

They're not playing well offensively and are still winning games against legit teams by playing fantastic defense (which speaks to Pitino's adaptability as a coach). We still lack maturity on the court, yes. Is that the major limitation? Yes. Will that end our tourney run early this year? Possibly. Does that make us a middle of the road Big East team? No. We have the talent to finish in the top 3 this season, and I think the Cards will come around, slowly, just like they did last year.

Sorry
you don't like my post, but all you have to is watch them play. We haven't beaten anyone this year decent, except for Marquette, and they've dropped 2 or 3 after our game. Not sure what you mean by self hate, I don't hate anyone, especially myself. I have seen enough basketball however to know when a team deserves to be raked over the coals for piss poor performance.

would that game been
"piss poor" if JDP hit that three?

Hell no!!
Even though a lucky shot at the buzzer would have been nice, it didn't happen, so I can be grumpy.

If I was unclear
By self-hate I meant hating on U of L, and I meant it in a humorous way, because we're all UL fans here. I know emotions were running pretty high after the game, I was watching the brick-laying too. I just don't want CC to turn into the Courier-Journal forums.

Mistake
One mistake I saw was by Pitino.  His refusal to get out of that match up zone earlier is befuddling.  We were trying to wear their guards down since they were short 2 of them via suspension.  We press them full court, only fall back into a zone in the half court.  It let them dribble up by the half court stripe for 8 or 10 seconds letting them catch their breath.  We should have gone "man" early in the second half and by the 7 or 8 minute mark all of their guards would have been gased.  Instead their guards didn't get really gased until about the 3 minute mark.

I mean we didn't need to pressure the ball very hard, just make them dribble around with and not stay in one spot for 8 or 10 seconds catching a mental and physical "breather".

That mistake, and the fact that when UConn switched from man to zone in the second half, the guys acted like they'd never seen man to man defense before.  We didn't get much out of our half court sets for a long stretch.

Its all very frustrating.

calling denny crum
Ive always wished Denny would attend every game just in case it was a close game within the final 2 minutes, so we could have him come down and win the game for us.

And for him to say that he had some teams in the past that would have lit them up from three is another stupid Pitino comment. I'm sick of hearing him compare and contrast our teams with his UK teams. Maybe its just me but i would rather him never fuckin mention UK.

by TheMrMeade on Jan 29, 2008 1:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What?
You compare Denny coaching ability to Rick's, then berate Rick for comparing past teams? I doesn't ring like a fair to me.

by Blocky on Jan 29, 2008 1:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he's right
Denny went to 2 sweet sixteens in his final 7 years. One of those would've been a final four if Dejuan Wheat hadn't been injured. Rick's been to one in his first six seasons (and it doesn't look like he's on the fast track this year). By the lofty standards of our athletic department, Rick should be gone.

so..
Listen block head, me comparing Denny and Rick's coaching ability AND Rick Pitino saying his former UK teams "would have hit those threes and won by 20" is the same??? You might wanna re-think that.. Sorry if im misunderstanding, but please explain how those correlate.

I herd a stat today that i loved.. With 1:00 to go and the game within 3 points Denny Crum has a 70+ winning %, compared to Rick's 30%. I cant remember the exact number but i know Denny was in the 70's and rick in the 30's..

by TheMrMeade on Jan 29, 2008 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I just re-read your comment
and i am 100% that your wrong.  Im comparing our former coach to our current coach on a website (A lovely one may i add)and Rick is saying in a press conference that his former teams would have done better.. One of those former teams being our arch rival.

by TheMrMeade on Jan 29, 2008 9:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it gets worse
I am little confused on what I am 100% wrong on. Rick compared his teams to one another, you compared Rick's coaching ability to Denny's.  Where am I incorrect? Great argument otherwise.

by Blocky on Jan 30, 2008 8:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yawn..
My point was that i am just a dude writing on a website and Rick is publicly saying his old team would do better...the old team being UK (I know i keep repeating myself but i dont get how you can't understand what im saying)

Im a nobody and Rick is the head coach.. I think the idea of this blog is to discuss and compare U of L material. So me comparing something is not even remotely close to Rick saying negative shit and publicly dissing our team.. Im not the only one complaining about his comment anyways man.

Hopefully that straightens things up.. and why i said you were 100% wrong i have no idea..

It's about style of play.
Pitino emphasizes "TEAM" out the ass. I can believe that Pitino loses games 3 points or closer with 3 mins left 70% of the time, because that is the WORST CASE scenario in the Pitino offense. You're supposed to be up by 15, shooting 40% from 3 with them cramping and running on fumes when there's 3:00 left in the game.

With Crum, you might win 70% the games you're up by 3 with 3 mins left, but they each take a year off your life, and there are a lot more games coming down to the wire than with Pitino.

I got ya
Well how about we start being up by 15 and canning three's. PLEASE!!!

I hope we can get this poor three point shooting turned around.. I cant believe were last in the conference. But after watching some of Juans bricks lately, along with the Earl Clark brick fest, i guess i can.

go cards

Im Angry
I hate yelling at the T.V. I always feel like my Grandpa watching the news and screaming at the anchors.

Stupid refs.
Stupid contested threes.
Stupid Hardcore Huskies.

The antithesis of my feelings after the Marquette game.

/sigh
