Kolby Smith Selected by the Chiefs

Louisville running back Kolby Smith was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round with the 148th overall selection.

Smith is expected to start the season third on the Chiefs depth chart, behind Larry Johnson and Michael Bennett.

Starting with the Syracuse game, Kolby really bailed Louisville out last year when it looked like no one was going to step up and shoulder the load after Michael Bush went down. After a slow start, he finished the season with a team-high 891 yards on 154 carries (5.6 avg) with seven touchdowns. He also ended up as the Cards' fourth leading receiver, haling in 24 catches for 217 yards.

The lasting image that Kolby leaves on U of L will come from his performance in the Orange Bowl when he rushed 82 huge yards on just 16 carries, and set up the go ahead touchdown with a huge first down pickup on a third and ten draw play.

Smith caught everyone's attention as a sophomore with his dazzling runs during mop-up duty late in Louisville's many blowouts. Despite having a team loaded at running back with the likes of Eric Shelton, Lionel Gates and Michael Bush, coach Bobby Petrino said at the time that Smith was probably his most talented overall back.

Best of luck to Kolby at the next level.
