Something Amazing Is Happening Here

What a shot, what a game, what a week, what freshman, what awful officiating. There's so much more to say and unfortunately I'm going to have to say it tomorrow.

For tonight, all I can say is soak it up boys and girls because that was special.

Amazing indeed
Who in the world would have ever thought that we'd be in this position two months ago? Bravo Coach Pitino.

ending
That was the least likely way that game was going to end. But damn, I glad it did.

Couple Observations
I was at the game last night and here are a couple of observations:
  1.  There were hardly ANY UofL fans at the game.  Maybe 100 total?  By far the fewest I have ever seen at a weekend away game and a far cry from the near-50% of the fans at the Depaul game last month.  I guess the scalpers charging $200 for good seats and $50 for the worst seats in the house had something to say about the ticket demand.
  2.  It seems cliched, but that was one of the worst officiated games I have ever seen.  There wasnt one single awful decision (ie, the BG/Buffalo result) but a compilation of about 25 bad calls (3 of Padgett's fouls and those AWFUL charging calls) and non-calls (how many times did Fitzgerald travel during the game??).
  3.  It's amazing how different UofL is when Twill doesnt chuck 3s.  UofL doesn't have any shooters (apologies to Jerry Smith) that "should" make the 3 if they are wide open (like Gaines, Garcia and Dean in the past) so they shouldn't be shooting 28 3's per game.  They have played more like Georgetown by shooting around 13 3's which is a perfect number for this team.  Twill still cannot finish around the basket, though.  He gets very vertical but can't convert.  Pitino should show him footage of Garcia getting to the rim and contorting his body to convert nearly 100% of his within 4' shots.
  4.  Here's a thought:  it depends on the opponent, but IMAGINE a lineup with Padgett AND Caracter on the court at the same time.  Last night, versus a very good defender in Barro, DP and DC were absolutely unstoppable.  Unstoppable.  As long as the opponent's power forward isnt a 3-point shooter, I think UofL could dominate teams with DC and DP both in the game.

#4
On the surface your point is valid, putting the best 5 players on the court is they way to win games. But that is not the case here. DP (Reno Dave as he is know in my house) is a far more experienced player that is far more well rounded. DP and DC also both play the 5, can you imagine how many fouls DC would draw it he had to defend a quick 4 or got switched on pick and had to pick up someone on the wing? Also playing both would take mins from E5 or tello, both of whom can extend the D when they are playing well.

officiating
Quinn is right. The game was one of the worst officiated games of the season, and that's saying something.  Theses guys were consistently awful and consistently out to get the Cards.  Looked like somebody was playing the over-under to me.  And I believe the same guy called all three of the first fouls against Padgett. The first two I could live with, though the second was questionable -- and I'm being charitable here.  The third one, though, was not even close.

The mark of a good team is one that can overcome when "they" are obviously out the get you, and that's what this bunch did.  I was one of those fair-weather guys who was quick to jump down Pitino's throat earlier in the year and boy, was I wrong.  The goodness he showed in bringing Ellis Myles back is all that needs to be said. That was a classy thing to do, and it's obviously helping with the youngun' too.
