Reed hammers Gillispie

I try to avoid talking about Kentucky whenever possible. At a very early age I picked up on the fact that UK fans seemed to be completely obsessed with Louisville, and while my dislike for the Blue is certainly strong, I'd hate to be confused with a person who would rather see another team lose than his own team win. Wildcat fans are the most overly sensitive group of people I've ever been around, so when you're around them it's best to avoid even the most seemingly harmless of ribbing unless you're prepared to ruin the night of the innocent bystanders surrounding you.

All that said, the last few days have been too much. Whether it's in person, on the phone or on the internet, all I've heard from UK fans - trying to ignore the fact that their season is an undeniable disaster the likes of which the previous administration never knew - for the last three days is that the Cards (Kentucky fans never say "Cardinals," I don't know why) are in disarray and Pitino didn't discipline a kid who broke curfew severely enough.

While I'm upset with the way Pitino handled the Caracter situation, if Gillispie had done the same thing with Ramel Bradley I wouldn't have read an entire article on the matter.

By now I think everyone in the Commonwealth has heard at least one Billy Gillispie story, and just about all of them involve something worse than not being in his bedroom by 9 p.m. Someone who's undoubtedly heard more than I have is eight-time Kentucky Sports Writer of the Year and former Sports Illustrated senior writer Billy Reed.

Reed may be the most respected voice when it comes to sports in the Bluegrass State, and he says it's no time to let Billy Clyde slide.

In case you hadn't noticed, the University of Kentucky basketball program is going to hell in a handbasket. It's serious, folks, and Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart needs to take emergency measures right now to keep the slippage from getting worse - even if it means facing up to the fact that new Coach Billy Clyde Gillispie so far has been a disaster in every way imaginable.

Barnhart could send Gillispie packing without having to worry about tearing up a contract because Gillispie still hasn't signed one. All he and Barnhart have is a memorandum of understanding. What's that all about? Could it really be true that Gillispie won't agree to any reasons for his dismissal except major NCAA rules violations or the commission of a felony?

That's just one of the rumors out there on the street. The stories about Gillispie's personal life have taken on a life of their own. It's almost as if every time a group of Wildcat fans gather, their favorite game is, "Have you heard the latest Gillispie story?"

I've heard a bunch of them, and my sources are people whom I trust and believe. I've heard that Gillispie and his staff are rude and arrogant. I've heard that Gillispie almost has gone out of his way to insult many loyal supporters. I've heard that he's not taking Van Florence, who has been the right-hand man for UK coaches for 31 years, on road trips this year.

And that's not even the worst of it. Suffice it to say that if the stories are anywhere close to being true, Gillispie was absolutely the wrong pick to follow a class act like Tubby Smith. For 10 years, whether you liked his coaching or not, Smith was a gentleman who never did anything to embarrass himself, his program, or the university.

The rumors are so widespread that if they're not true, I want Barnhart to say so. I want him to stand up in front of the media and state that he is perfectly happy with Coach Gillispie's personal conduct. He doesn't have to address the stories specifically. Just tell the public that the rumors are false and should not be believed, under any circumstances.

...

When I called Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight to ask about him, Knight said, "He's a good coach, but the question is whether he can handle all that other crap surrounding that program."

I didn't really have an opinion when Kentucky first hired Gillispie, but my father - who has a track record of being right when it comes to these sorts of things - used the words "absolute disaster" within five minutes of learning the news. I'm not saying this can't be fixed, but "Billy Clyde" certainly seems to be doing all he can to prove dad right.

Ha
You gotta love Bobby Knight.

"...all that other crap surrounding that program."

Classic.

I agree that UK fans are touchy.  A friend of mine is a UK fan and when they got beat by Garden Ridge, I ribbed him a little bit, good naturedly of course.  He started firing back at me about football and Kragthorpe, etc.  Its like geez dude take it easy.  As a whole UK fans live in the past about U of L being "little brother".  They just don't seem to want to let that go.

Their basketball program is sliding and their football program will return to obscurity next year.  They really have nothing to be all "big brother" about any more...

You know
UK goes to Las Vegas for a tournament next year. I wonder if Billy Clyde can get as many pictures on Napkin Nights as Walter and company did? :)

Seriously, though. I have no clue about these rumors are true or not. All I know is that Kentuckians love a good story more than they love the truth. And they love even more to be "close to the source" -- my friend's brother told me, my cousin works at the Merrick Inn and said, my lawyer who knows Mitch said, etc.

But I'm not worried about Kentucky basketball. We suck right now; so what? It happens. Louisville sucked it up pretty good a few years ago -- remember those terrible "can't spell Pitino without NIT" jokes? It happens.

I think our football program made a significant splash this year to keep recruiting efforts high. I'm no expert, but I think Kentucky will be a respectable middle-of-the-pack SEC team. Hopefully Louisville football will rebound next year as well.

I bet within one month
one of the BG is a "wild and crazy guy" stories will snowball into something bigger and end up in the traditional media. (Larry Eustacy, anyone?) It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Barnhart is the one who leaks it, either. It sounds like UK got itself a party dude who may or may not be able to coach.

BTW, Mike, what did your especially prescient dad say when we hired SK last year?
