Louisville named regional host, opens play Friday night

It was quite the Memorial Day weekend for the Louisville baseball program.

Not only did the Cards capture their second consecutive Big East Tournament title, but U of L was named a No. 1 seed and regional host for the first time in history.

Louisville will open th NCAA Tournament Friday night at 7 p.m. against Indiana, a squad they defeated twice in the regular season. No. 2 Vanderbilt will face No. 3 Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. in the regional opener. The Cards dropped a 4-3 decision to the Commodores earlier this year.

All things considered, this appears to be a fantastic draw for the Cardinal Nine. Fullerton waiting in the Super Regional isn't ideal, but we'll cross that trunk when we get there.

The national top eight seeds in the 64-team tournament are Texas (41-13-1), Cal State Fullerton (42-14), LSU (46-16), North Carolina (42-16), Arizona St. (44-12), UC Irvine (43-13), Oklahoma (41-18) and Florida (39-20).

You can see the full tournament bracket here.

Congrats to Dan McDonnell and the boys for making history yet again.

Cards blow past Notre Dame, 12-2

Eight of Louisville's nine starters had at least one hit as the Cards blew out Notre Dame 12-2 in the second round of the Big East Tournament in Clearwater, Fla.

U of L now advances to the semifinal round where they'll face either the Fighting Irish or St. John's Friday at 10 a.m. So long as the Cards aren't beaten in consecutive games, they will advance to the Big East title game Saturday at 1 p.m.

Catcher Jeff Arnold stayed hot, leading Louisville at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. The home run was Arnold's second in as many postseason games. He belted just one round-tripper in the regular season. Reliever Tyler Mathis picked up the win, working five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six.

Once again it's late May and the Louisville Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in the country.

Watch out.

Louisville leads Notre Dame with play suspended

The Louisville baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning of its second round Big East Tournament game against Notre Dame Wednesday, and holds a 9-2 lead with play suspended after three innings because of rain.

The game will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

Andrew Clark and Jeff Arnold both homered in the first to spark the early onslaught, but the Cards, who have scored nine runs on just four hits, also benefited from Fighting Irish starter Ryan Richter's inability to find the strike zone or hold runners on base.

A U of L victory will bring the Cards just a win away from their second Big East title game in as many seasons.

Cards sweep South Florida, capture Big East title

The Louisville baseball team swept a three-game set from former skipper Lelo Prado and South Florida to capture the Big East regular season title yeterday.

The clincher cam via a 12-1 rout in the second game of a double-header at Jim Patterson Stadium Friday evening. Phil Wunderlich belted a grand slam in the first inning, Adam Duvall added four hits, and sophomore lefty Bob Revesz yielded just five hits over seven innings to lead the charge.

The Cards (40-14, 19-7) will be the top seed at the Big East Tournament in Clarwater, Fla., which begins on Tueday. U of L captured the tournament crown a season ago.

At 40-14 and ranked 23rd in the country, Louisville would seed to be a lock to make its third straight NCAA Tournament, but capturing an automatic bid would make Selection Monday that much more enjoyable for the Cardinal Nine.

Notes from U of L:

- The Cardinals got four important wins this week and one key component was the pitching staff. In their four wins over Western Kentucky and South Florida, the Cardinals allowed only six earned runs in 36 innings with 35 strikeouts and only one walk.

- After 54 games in regular season play, junior Chris Dominguez and sophomore Phil Wunderlich lead the Cardinals in hitting as each stand at .365 overall. Dominguez also leads the team with 21 home runs and 75 RBI, while Wunderlich is second on the team with 15 home runs and 66 RBI. Interestingly, the .365 average, 21 home runs and 75 RBI are the identical numbers that Dominguez finished the 2008 season with, though this time he still has the entire post-season to build on those numbers.

- The 3,663 fans for Saturday night's BIG EAST title-clinching win over USF is the largest regular-season crowd ever at Jim Patterson Stadium and the fourth largest overall. The only time Louisville has surpassed that number was for the Cards' three Super Regional games in 2007 against Oklahoma State as more than 4,000 fans witnessed each of those.

- In three seasons as the Louisville head coach, Dan McDonnell has amassed an impressive 128-58 record with a winning percentage of 68 percent and three straight 40-win seasons. He's also led the program to its first ever BIG EAST regular season title (2009), first ever BIG EAST Tournament title (2008) and first ever College World Series appearance (2007).

Louisville crushes Kentucky in Lexington

Louisville exploded for six runs in the seventh inning and added another three in the eighth to top arch-rival Kentucky 11-2 last night at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington. The margin of victory was the largest for the Cards over the Cats since a 15-4 win in 1992.

Chris Dominguez again led the way for U of L at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and drilling his team-best 13th home run of the season. Drew Haynes, Andrew Clark, Phil Wunderlich and John Dao each added two hits.

Louisville, which currently sits at 12-6 and tied for second in the Big East, opens a three-game set at Villanova Friday afternoon at 3:45.

Additional congrats to the Louisville softball team which also defeated Kentucky on Tuesday, topping the Cats 2-0 at Ulmer Stadium.

Cards and Cats tonight at Jim Patterson

Fresh off a sweep of Pittsburgh, the Louisville baseball team will host arch-rival Kentucky tonight at 6 p.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium.

The vast majority of tickets for the contest have already been snatched up, but there are spots available in the berm.

U of L and UK have split their two-game series in each of the past two seasons.

A year ago, the Wildcats won the first meeting at Cliff Hagan Stadium on a 12th inning walk-off home run from Wildcat center fielder Keenan Wiley. Threee weeks later, the Cardinals posted single runs in the bottom of the eighth and ninth to erase a 5-4 UK lead and post a 6-5 win on a walk-off single from Chris Dominguez. Both games in the series in 2008 saw record crowds, with Louisville setting its school record with 3,652 fans and UK setting a new school mark with a crowd of 4,009.

Kentucky (18-16) will send Clint Tilford to the mound against the Cards. The junior right-hander is 1-3 this season with a 4.65 ERA, but he held U of L to just one rin over 6.2 innings in the Wildcats' victory a year ago.

No word yet on who Dan McDonnell will counter with.

Dominguez slams three in Cape League, matches Big Hurt

Chris Dominguez turned in one of the most impressive individual performances in the history of the prestigious Cape Cod League Wednesday night, belting three home runs to match the single-game league record set by Frank Thomas in 1988.

The Big East Player of the Year now has six bombs on the season, leading the way for Hyannis, which currently sits atop the league's Western Division.

However, no one would have blamed him for wanting two autographs from Dominguez. Not after the Louisville slugger had just turned one of the most impressive performances in Cape Cod Baseball League history and certainly the greatest in his young but promising career.

Dominguez hit three homers, matching a CCBL wood-bat record set by Frank Thomas in 1988, and drove in five runs, while also turning two double plays to lead Hyannis to a 6-4 victory over visiting Falmouth Wednesday night. The power-hitting right-hander now has twice as many home runs (six) as the rest of the Mets combined (three) to go along with a .297 batting average and team-best 17 RBI.

Count Hyannis coach Rick Robinson among the impressed.

“If we’re looking for a mascot next year if we’re not going to be the Mets,” Robinson said, “I think we need to be the Dominguezes.”

Dominguez, who says he is still set on returning to Louisville "unless something crazy happens at the end of the summer," also turned in a sparkling defensive performance.

The third baseman also shined defensively. In the seventh, Dominguez caught a sharp line drive and fired across the diamond for the double-play, and in the eighth he snagged another liner and stepped on third to help the Mets escape a bases-loaded jam unscathed. Then, with Falmouth threatening in the ninth, Dominguez made a beautiful catch leaning against the dugout railing.

“He just had opportunities to do a lot and he took advantage of every single one of them,” Robinson said. “There are a lot of times you have a chance to do exactly the same thing he did, but very few people are ever able to capitalize on every single opportunity and basically that’s what he did tonight.”

Even if you're a casual baseball fan who's never been to a game at Jim Patterson Stadium, I beg you to get out there at least once next spring and see this kid, because it's not very often that guys like this come through here. Miss it, and you will have missed something very special.
