#53 Jake Smith
Class: RS Senior
Position: Offensive Line
Hometown: Jacksonville, Ala
Thoughts: Jake Smith is a hell of a story for the University of Louisville. Back in 2010 Jake committed to play here when there wasn’t much to write home about in regards to the current state of the program. After taking a redshirt Jake worked his way into a starting role on the offensive line at guard and ended up being the first player in the history of the program to be named a to the FWAA All-Freshman team.
The awards never stopped rolling in, including multiple preseason All-Conference nods this year, and continue to place him among the best here at Louisville. Unless my math is off (carry the two…divide by three…subtract 3.5…) Smith will be starting his 38th game on September 1st out of a possible 39 starts (Didn’t start against Florida due to being sick). In a position along the line it’s pretty remarkable to stay healthy that long, and his counterparts (Brown, Miller) have been equally as impressive.
There has been some discussion about moving Smith back to Guard this season, but I still haven’t read anything concrete from the staff saying it’s going to happen. The previously released depth chart still has Jake at the center position and I guess I’ll maintain that opinion until Klenakis or Petrino tell us otherwise. I love Jake Smith, and I’m not afraid to tell the world. The guy came into our program in a tough time, worked his butt off all four years, and has had success at the highest level. The first year in the ACC will be tough in the trenches, but I like our group up front to give Gardner a solid chance to perform on every down.
Sweet Tweet: No twitter for Jake that I could locate, and since I just went all "bro-mantic" in the recap above I figure I need to go to the opposite end of the spectrum to get my man card back. What’s manlier than manly tears??
