#63 Josh Stearns
Class: RS Junior
Position: Offensive Line
Hometown: Louisville, KY (Product of DuPont Manual High School)
Thoughts: Josh is another local product who saw some game action last season as some of the scores and minor injuries began to pile up. I’d expect to see Josh maintain his role as a second/third string lineman and get some clock as the big boys need a breather or when Bobby decides to drop 60 on somebody.
As we enter ACC play size becomes a large factor in the success of your linemen as a unit. Is it the end all be all? Of course not, but you’re kidding yourself thinking you can get by with undersized players. Just out of curiosity I looked at the 2013 FSU O-line to get a gauge of what we could expect to see. You might be surprised to learn that their starting lineman was on average 6’5" and 317lb while UofL’s was 6’3" 320lb. Not bad. Not bad at all. The issue is when you start to dip into that second unit (i.e Acosta, Stearns, Hughley, Polston, Epps, etc) and we drop down to around 6’2" and 280lb. That won’t work. Bobby and the crew know this and they are starting to go after the bigger guys along the line. In 2014 the incoming freshman offensive lineman are 6’6" 339 (D. Burns), 6’6" 278lb (L. McNeil) and 6’4" 350lb (J. Terry). The lone 2015 lineman we have so far (Jones) is 6’4" 310lb and I’d expect him to easily add 10-15lbs once he reaches campus. Times are changing and we’ll need to adapt or get run over. I trust Petrino knows what he's doing.
If Bane took over Indiana instead of Gotham I don't think I would be too upset.— Josh Stearns (@StunnaStearns63) July 19, 2013
With a lot of my big ‘life events’ happening over on the sunny side of the river I should probably take exception to his comment.......but I don’t. I think it’s hilarious.
(EDIT: I just jumped onto the UofL Roster page and it appears Mr. Stearns is no longer listed on the team as of 8:27am. No idea what this means but possibly noteworthy)
