In my opinion, honoring Russ' career at Louisville by retiring his number, and raising it to the rafters, is a certainty. As I have thought about this, I have wondered about the timing. First Home game? First Conference game? An exhibition game against ..? If only we played Manhattan this year at home, it would make for a wonderful acknowledgement that we almost lost him to Manhattan.
Now that Russ has been drafted, and traded to New Orleans, I am thinking of the possibility of making the ceremony happen prior to the exhibition game between the Pelicans and the Heat. Russ would be there, and while it may make the night too emotional for him, it would drive the crowd crazy to have him in attendance. I figure Russ will be pretty stoked to be playing in the Yum one more time regardless.
What do you think? Do we owe it to the fans to raise the jersey at a Louisville game, or do we raise it when we know Russ will be able to make it? Otherwise, we will need to coordinate the raising of the jersey with the Pelicans schedule so Russ can be there.
