Inspired by Cool Hand Cards' recent post pitting Louisville fantasy teams with players from the Pitino era against each other, I chose to put together a similar post. I created two teams of 11 players from the last four years, a period that could be called the L1C4 era, the "Louisville Rick" era, or the Siva-Smith-Dieng era that started with Preston!'s senior year. I went back and found the 22 players that saw any playing time at all and split 'em up into two teams. Unfortunately, Levitch didn't make the cut since he'd leave an odd number of players. Also, his Cardinals teams are undefeated, so it wouldn't be fair.
I tried hard to balance talent, size, leadership, depth at each position (pretty thin at true PG and PF, but lots of combo guards and wings), etc. and I think I did a decent job. It was pretty fun to do, so I hope y'all enjoy. Here are the rosters and the poll:
- PG - Peyton Siva, Kevin Ware
- SG - Preston Knowles, Tim Henderson, Anton Gill
- SF - Wayne Blackshear, Kyle Kuric
- PF - Montrezl Harrell, Jared Swopshire
- C - Stephan Van Treese, Terrence Jennings
Here I think you'd have Siva playing 35 min and Ware spelling him for short rests. Preston!, Wayne, and Kuric would likely split time at the 2 and 3. Trez would play 35 min with Swop or a two center lineup when he's out, depending on match ups. The centers would likely split time as well. Although, looking back at Jennings' sophomore season and seeing he went for 10 pts, 5 reb, and 2 blocks per game while playing only 23 minutes and shooting 53% from the floor and 66% from the line, I think he'd ending up playing more, especially with his size against Gorgs.
- PG - Chris Jones, Terry Rozier, Elisha Justice
- SG - Russ Smith, Mike Marra
- SF - Luke Hancock, Chris Smith
- PF - Chane Behanan, Rakeem Buckles
- C - Gorgui Dieng, Mangok Mathiang
At guard you'd have the same 3 man rotation we had this year, with Russ playing 35. Chris Smith is more of a 2, but he's better than Marra, so he'd back up Luke and see 10-15 min a game. Chane and Gorgui would likely play 35 min per game as well.
Overall I think Team 1's got better guard play while no one matches with Gorgui at center on either team. Tough call for me. What do you think?
