So, I was talking to my dad this morning, and we noticed that if the Cards win today, they will "hold the championship belt" for 3 separate conferences. We won the tournament on our way out of C-USA, we won the Big East tournament last year and we obviously have a shot at the AAC tournament this year. My dad then pointed out that we also won the Metro Conference tourney the last year that it existed. This all inspired me to do a little research.
Prior to joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 1964, U of L wasn't in a conference, so there was nothing to win. The last season in the MVC (1974), the Cards were the regular season champs and there was no tournament as far as I can tell.
U of L was then in the Metro Conference until 1995. In that '94-'95 season, the Cards were second in the regular season, but did win the conference tournament for the third time in a row behind the efforts of one Clifford Rozier (yes, they are related).
The last year in Conference USA, the Cards were both regular season champs and tourney champs. Same with last year.
So, you can make the argument that U of L currently holds the title of Champion for FOUR separate conferences (and will forever unless we rejoin those conferences, by my line of thinking) and are halfway to adding a fifth "permanent" title currently.
So yeah, I'd say we know how to leave a conference in style. Let's keep that rich tradition going today.
