Cards 2005 versus Cards 2014

I was looking up some information after a comment about UofL's AP ranking versus the RPI and I stumbled across the 2005 season as being the closest as far as disparity between the AP and the RPI. It lead me to look at other similarities between that season and this season (at least up to this point).

Number 1

2005:

Our last year in C-USA before heading to the much stronger Big East

2014:

Out last (first, only, whatever) year in the American before heading to the much stronger ACC

Number 2

2005:

Conference tournament awarded to Memphis because Louisville was leaving the conference.

2014:

Conference tournament awarded to Memphis because Louisville was leaving the conference.

Number 3

2005:

Won C-USA regular season title with a 26-4 (14-2) record.

2014:

Tied for America regular season title with a 26-5 (15-3) record

Number 4

2005:

Began post-season play ranked #4 in the AP, #6 in the coaches and around #18 in the RPI because of weaker SOS.

2014:

Begin post-season play ranked #5 in both polls and around #27 in the RPI because of a weaker SOS.

Number 5

2005:

Team was a nice mix of upperclassmen (Francisco Garcia, Larry O'Bannon, Taquan Dean, and Ellis Myles) with good freshmen (Juan Palacios, Lorrenzo Wade) a group of role players (Brandon Jenkins, Otis George, Perrin Johnson)

2014:

Team lead by a nice mix of upperclassmen (Russ Smith, Chris Jones, Luke Hancock, Stephen Van Treese) with standout underclassmen (Terry Rozier, Montrezl Harrell) a group of role players (Mangok Mathiang, Tim Henderson, Wayne Blackshear)

Number 6

2005:

Lovable walk-on Brad Gianiny

2014:

Lovable walk-on David Levitch

Number 7

2005 Post-season:

Won the C-USA tournament on the Darius Washington choke. Got a 4-seed in the tourney. Killed 1-seed Washington in the Elite 8. Beat future rival West Virginia in OT to reach the Final Four.

2014 Post-season:

We shall see....
