Denny and Rick.
Separated by age, coast (West/East), style of play , and era.
Tied together by one school.
And...the word dynasty.
Denny came on in 1971 and won two Final Fours in '72 and '75-- and almost won it all in '75 too.
It took him 9 years--1980--to win the big prize. People forget-- he was heavily scrutinized for Griffith's first 3 years for underachieving. The Cards were certainly not favorites to win it all in 1980.
Then he went on his 80's run that produced another 3 Final Fours and that one more big ring.
Rick came to the Ville in 2001. Thought he would take the college world by storm again with Sebastian Telfair and others like him. Got burned bad.
Finally got his first Final four in 2005.
Then he got another in 2012. And finally, gloriously, the big ring in 2013, 12 years after he arrived.
And now...we're on another 80's run. Two Final Fours in a row, plus that shiny big ring.
The college world has changed so much since the 80's--and so little. The teams of the 80's were all senior led, and totally skilled. They easily would play even with the best of today's era of frosh and sophs.
We are set for the next few years with a rejuvenated Louisville Rick and our players coming in.
Dynasty. A simple yet powerful word. Will we see another Final Four this year again? Another ring?
All I can say is this: I am so, SO lucky to have seen both in my lifetime, and look forward to the wonder of MORE!
