#29 Hakeem Smith
Class: RS Senior
Hometown: Jonesboro, Ga
Thoughts: Hakeem has been a man amongst boys in the secondary for the last few years. How else do you explain three All-Conference selections, new comer of the year back in 2010 and a current member of THREE, yes THREE, preseason award watch lists (Jim Thorpe, Bednarik, Nagurski). Smith finished third in tackles last season with 73, to go right along with his seven pass breakups and forced fumble. The lone area of improvement for Smith appears to be in the interception column, as he didn't have any last season, and only has one to his credit during his three seasons. One can make the assumption that they avoid his side of the field at times, therefore reducing his opportunities. This may be true, but you'd think over the course of three years you would have picked at up least a couple by accident. Hell, Marcus Smith has one interception.
With that being said, we got a special player back there this year, one who amazingly enough has the opportunity to play even better this season. I like the way the defense looks this year and I wouldn't be surprised to see Hakeem take home one of those three awards mentioned above when it's all said and done.
Hakeem is not only a talented football player, but appears to get his Picasso on from time to time as well. Maybe Hakeem can sketch up the open gate pic for Mike? I like the sketches Hakeem, but I'm really looking for some kind of pop art piece. Something that really grabs my attention. Makes me question the wonders of the world. Makes my wonder how I ever lived without it...
