There's a whole lot going on right now for Louisville fans. But there is one more thing for people to keep in mind this Saturday: Goldencent's last chance to get into the Derby!
The race is set to go off at 7 p.m. Paciic, and it is going to be a very tough race for him. Sitting at 29 points, if he gets third or better he will have locked in a spot in the gate. Finishing fourth would not be the end of the world, but he will be on the line and his spot in the gate would be uncertain. Right now he is #15 on the standings, with the top 20 get in. But six races are coming up with points, a lot can change.
Goldencents is coming off of a pretty tough loss in the San Felipe Stakes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-9K8AkpuLU ), where he finished fourth behind Hear the Ghost, Flashback, and Tiz a Minister, all of whom will be in the Santa Anita Derby. Two other horses, Super Ninety Nine and Power Broker are going to be super tough for him. Goldencent's jockey Kevin Krigger tweeted after the race blaming Flashback's jockey for his loss-pushing him too fast too early. After getting some heat for that comment, it was deleted. This is Krigger's first major horse and he's never had the spotlight on him before. But the connections are still happy with him, so he is staying aboard.
The Santa Anita Derby is a very significant horse race, just winning that is an accomplishment in itself. It is without a doubt one of the highlights in the weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby. Goldencents just put in the fastest work of the day on March 29, going 6F in 1:14 flat, so he is sharp and ready. This is going to be an awesome race, and last year I'll Have Another used it as his final tune-up for his trip to Louisville. It has a history of producing winners.
