While I am an eternal optimist when it comes to the Cards' chances at a BCS berth, I do realize that the candle of opportunity is close to being blown out. But there are a couple of games this week that could go a long way in determining whether that light will continue to glimmer. Watch out for Toledo on Wednesday. They play host to Northern Illinois, and the Rockets (7-3, 5-1) could give NIU some trouble. If Toledo wins, NIU's at-large BCS hopes will likely shatter, which could help the Cards' slim chances.
The other weeknight game this week with major implications for the Cards is Rutgers at Central Florida. We all know UCF needs to lose two out of their last 3 for the Cards to win the conference and BCS bid...But let's be serious--UCF will not lose BOTH of its last two games. So they must lose against Rutgers and then lose ONE of their last two games. While it seems on the surface that the Scarlet Knights won't be able to hang with the other Knights on Thursday night, hope still remains. Rutgers was embarassed against Cincinnati last week and UCF somehow keeps surviving by the hair of its chinny chin chin. If Rutgers can blow UCF's house down this week, then the candle light begins to look a lot stronger from afar. If that happens, we will need UCF to lose against EITHER South Florida or SMU. While I don't hold out much hope for a Bulls victory, the Mustangs will likely be hosting UCF on the last game of the season with a chance to make a bowl bid themselves. Nobody ever said this would be easy.
Now if you'll excuse me, I am going to see if I can locate Greg Schiano and convince him to hit the Rutgers' sidelines on Thursday.
