By the Numbers: Week 7

Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Another beautiful game under clear skies. Another stadium filled to near capacity (and you slackers with flu, pneumonia, children's birthday parties, etc. know who you are). Another chance to hoot, holler and act like fools in the best college sports town in America. Am I forgetting something?

Oh yea, ANOTHER WIN!

The Louisville Cardinals under Coach Charlie Strong are now sitting on a perfect 6-0 record, something matched by only 8 of the top 25 teams. There were struggles and decisions made for us to discuss, but Louisville managed to overcome a historically tough and unpredictable opponent by a final score of 24-10.

You'll notice that for this week I'm switching the rankings up. The reason for that is that the AP Poll I was using is not used in calculating BCS rankings. The BCS ranking is a mad stew of the USA Today Coaches Poll, the Harris Poll and a variety of computer polls. For more than you wanted to know about how sausage is made, check the BCSKnowHow site.

You may also notice two other things. 1) It's taken longer for me to post this and 2) there's a lot more here. Those are related. I've moved the whole shebang into spreadsheets which gives me more (and automated) ways to slice the data.

Let's take a look at the numbers.

Thoughts

  • Not many, I've been too busy importing stats into the new system
  • Oregon gets a LOT of penalties
  • Point Ratio: Still dominating
  • Yardage Ratio (even with the last two games being shorter): Still killing it
  • Damian Copeland moved ahead of DeVante this week
  • Personal assignment for the week: Write on the chalkboard "I will not bitch about Sean Watson running too much" 100x

One of the nice things about the numbers being all spreadsheet-y is that I can run some stats instead of guessing and flying off the handle. One of those was our run / pass ratio. We are tied for the LOWEST run selection percentage of any top 10 team. Oregon, with that fancy-schmancy Pacific Rainforest QB runs the ball a full 9% more than we do.

What I Listened to while building / rebuilding spreadsheets

Discussion

  • Where's Teddy going to end up on this weeks Heisman rankings?
  • What's our biggest challenge in facing UCF?
  • What do the coaches need to work on from last week?
  • Why is it when someone wants your opinion, it's a penny for your thoughts, but if you try to offer it, you're putting your two cents in?

And one last thought...

Our defense is good. REALLY REALLY GOOD. They need a handle. The wide receivers have the AFROS, but our defense doesn't have that tag yet. Last week, one was suggested by Reddbird95 but he didn't have it filled out. I propose that we roll out...
