Yes, that just happened...
We just dropped our second straight game to a team previously 2-3 in the Big East.
But it's not even Feburary. By this time last year we had already dropped 3 big east games. Two at home, and one a 31 point loss to Providence. At this point past year we were all thinking that it was an NIT year at best, but there was something much better in store for us that season. A big east championship followed by a final four berth, with a team that had trouble putting up 60 points a game. If that team can do, this years team can definitely do even more. Lets look at this logically for a moment.
Villinova hit 7 threes in this game. They are now 9-0 when making more than 6 threes in a game
Russ Smith had arguably his worst offensive game of the season. He shot a pathetic 2-13 from the field.
Gourgi had yet another double-double in this game. While its obvious the wrist is still a big problem (especially when putting the ball on the floor) we know that the cast will be off soon and he should be at 100%
Peyton had probably one of the better passing performances of his career
Wayne looks to finally be finding his stroke from beyond the arc which will be huge down the stretch
Chane Behanan very well might have cost us this game. He missed 5 consecutive free-throws and apparently needs some of those receiver gloves to catch a pass in the paint
So, if we look at it in the view of our normal statistics, Russ shoots 5-13 with 15 points, and we shoot 17-24 from the free-throw line. Final score 76-73. That's still a crappy score, but even with those adjusted stats we played terrible. The team that showed up tonight was not the same team that played on Saturday night. The team that played Saturday night was a team with national championship potential getting the game blown because of two bad calls. No, the team that played tonight was a team pouting over their loss to Syracuse, and over looking this game. The team that played tonight is not the same team you will see come March.
