Louisville Soccer Stuns No. 2 Notre Dame

The Louisville men's soccer team kicked off its Big East season in style by stunning previously unbeaten and second-ranked Notre Dame 2-1 at Cardinal Park on Saturday.

Andrew "Peppa" Farrell netted the game-winner for the Cards with a PK in the 73rd minute. Sophomore Dylan Mares scored the other goal for U of L with a header near the end of the first half.

The win is the biggest of the season yet for a young Louisville team which appears to be hitting its stride. The Cards were just 3-3 and coming off a disappointing loss to Kentucky when they blew out perennial power Ohio State 4-0 last week. That momentum carried over into the weekend where they were able to knock the Fighting Irish down to 7-1-0 on the year.

"It's a great way to start conference play," said the always dapper Ken Lolla. "(Notre Dame) is a great team. They hadn't lost coming in here and they'd played against a pretty good schedule. We've still got a lot of grown and a lot of work to do, but that was a great way to start the Big East."

U of L is back in action on Sunday at Rutgers. That game will be nationally televised by CBC College Sports at 1 p.m.
