Five Reasons You Should (Still) Hate Southern Miss

The Louisville/Southern Miss rivalry is never going to be what it was during the 1990s, but there are still plenty of reasons why Cardinal fans should want to thrash their old nemeses from Hattiesburg this weekend.

There was a time not too long ago when Southern Miss was the rival for Louisville football, and the programs despised each other on just about every level. That period ended the moment U of L accepted a bid to join the Big East conference, but I think it's safe to say there are still remnants of ill will floating around.

Since the bad blood is back - at least for this week - let's look at the top five reasons why we all still loathe our old rivals from Hattiesburg.

5. They Still Hate Us

If you check a Southern Miss message board at virtually any time in the calendar year, you're likely to find at least one comment or thread in which Louisville is admonished. And honestly it's kind of hard to blame them.

The Golden Eagles dominated Louisville and maintained a vastly superior program for the bulk of the rivalry period. Louisville has won five straight over USM, but still trails the all-time series 18-10-1. And yet it was U of L that got hot in the 2000's and ultimately received the opportunity to bolt for the Big East, leaving Southern Miss behind to plod along in a conference that all but guaranteed program regression.

It's much easier to hold onto hatred for Louisville than to develop a newfound disdain for UAB.

4. The Brett Favre Hail Mary

The first Louisville football game I ever attended was against Southern Miss. I had beer spilled on me and we lost. The first time I remember being upset over a Louisville football game was the Brett Favre hail mary. If you were older than five and in attendance then I'm sure it hurt you even more than me. Basically, Southern Miss brought out the worst in life from '89-'99.

3. The Beef Bowl Dance-Off

Tempers flared between the Cardinals and Golden Eagles during a planned dance-off event in the week leading up to the 2010 Beef 'O Brady's Bowl.

I think we all remember what happened next...

The event also resulted in one of my favorite quotes of all-time.

"They started talking trash about us being in Conference USA, [that] we can't dance... it was stupid. We'll do our talking on the field," uttered one Golden Eagle who refused to be identified. "A friendly dance competition and they take it all serious? It's ridiculous."

2. Brett Favre

He might be the most annoying person alive, he made ESPN even more unwatchable than usual, he makes Dina from Salute Your Shorts seem selfless, he's a celebrated sexual deviant, and he went to Southern Miss.

1. Mills Kills

If we're talking about worst Louisville losses ever from a pure anger/frustration standpoint, then this has to be top five.

The C-USA championship - which would have been Louisville's first - was on the line, and the game was as hard-fought as any I can remember. Tied at 27 with a little over two minutes to play the Golden Eagles lined up to punt, but ran a successful fake which immediately sparked a still on-going debate over the play's legality.

It's the first time I really remember being heartbroken after a Louisville football game.

Beat Southern Miss.
