#31 Champ Lee
Class: RS Junior Ht/Wt: 6-0/218 Position: Linebacker Hometown: Lakeland, Fla
Louisville’s Take: Has moved around between linebacker and the secondary ... can add much-needed depth at linebacker ... will be an asset on special teams.
Thoughts: "Much needed depth"? Look, I’m not a coach. Never claimed to be. I’m also not an expert in filling up a roster. But the one thing I feel pretty confident in is counting. And I count SIXTEEN players listed at linebacker now. Just how many players does Coach Jean-Mary need?! I know some of these guys will get moved around and maybe not play a single down at that position, but sixteen guys? Let’s say the first string all get the measles, then the second string comes down with Typhoid Fever, the third string squad all get snake bites and the fourth string gets a broken axle. Even on this Oregon Trail adventure we still got four more linebackers floating over the Kansas River Crossing. We are young, I understand, but hopefully we can find a spot for everyone, including Champ Lee, as the year continues. Champ played in eight games last year, all on special teams after redshirting back in 2009. Coming into the program Champ was a little smaller and was looking more at a position in the secondary. Beefing up 20lb is a plus and hopefully Champ gets the opportunity to showcase his skills this year on defense as well as special teams.
Potential Nicknames: "Champ", "Lee-Pain" (I see a little T-Pain resemblance)
#31 DeMarcus Topp
Class: RS Senior Ht/Wt: 5-10/180 Position: Wide Receiver Hometown: Paducah, KY
Louisville’s Take: (No Notes Provided)
Thoughts: DeMarcus, who has been on the team for three years, has seen very little to zero game action, BUT….he has been standing out among the second team wideouts this spring. If you were one of the 15,000 plus that attended the spring game, you saw DeMarcus pull in the game winning TD catch from one Mr. Stein a.k.a. Sunny. I think we all know how dominant DeVante, Eli, Radcliff and M. Harris could be, but we need those second-tier guys to provide as little drop off as possible. Hardwork just might let Topp fill that void. Keep an eye on DeMarcus.
Potential Nicknames: "Topp Shelf"
