Among other things, to me Derby has always served as both the end of the post-Cardinal basketball hangover and the beginning of the seemingly endless Cardinal football preseason.
For what seemed like every year in the 2000s, I remember walking towards Churchill Downs on Derby morning, seeing or walking through PJCS and then talking with my friends about how good we were going to be in football that fall. That happened again on Saturday for the first time since 2007, and it felt great.
The dead period is always painfully long, but it's a lot more manageable when what's waiting at the end of the gauntlet is something worthy of genuine excitement.
