Some pretty good insight from Eric Crawford today about a new New Years Day "bowl" that would pit the winners of the SEC and Big 12 against each other (a la the Rose Bowl). Why do we care? According to Crawford it, with the playoff, "sets up a new hierarchy of the college football postseason."
The biggest takeaway here is that our position in the Big East will end up meaning even less (and a spot in the ACC won't be much better).
At first glance, it also does the following:
– Relegates Big East and ACC (and the Mountain West) to leftovers. How this might affect a program like Florida State, pondering its satisfaction with the ACC, or Notre Dame, and what its access to the playoff might be, remains to be seen.
If we want to make football at Louisville a priority we need to be in one of the four conferences that are relevant. I don’t care how much you don’t like Texas or how much you love the ACC (or the Big East). This new bowl would effectively create another tier in FBS that we would not be part of.
We need an invite to the Big 12.
