Will Dieng be in the top 10 and do we want him to be?
Around the 12th of every month rivals.com via yahoo ranks the top players by position. Last month rivals ranked 'centers' and had Gorgui Dieng listed as #12. Check it out: http://collegebasketball.rivals.com/viewcbse.asp Just select "centers" on the drop down menu.
Here are the guys listed above Gorgui:
1. Sullinger, OSU
2. Davis, UK
3. Jones III, Baylor
4. Zeller, N. Carolina
5. Zeller, Indiana
6. Yarou, Villanova
7. Sarce, Gonzaga
8. Young, Florida
9. Drummond, UConn
10. Ezeli, Vanderbilt
11. Gates, Cincinatti.
Gorgui has already played against Yarou and Drummond. He owned both of them, so you would think he would move into the top 10 at least. He may go higher since Gates has about the same averages in points/rebounds, but less blocks.
So where would you rank Gorgui amoungst other big men in the country? How high do you think rivals will rank him? Do we want him to get too good? After all, if he were to leave after this year then we don't have anyone that can really replace him.

Yeah
I doubt he will leave. He says often that this teams means more to him than anything.
I think Gorgui will be in the top 10 by the end of the year
and in the top 5 as a junior, and in the top 3 – possibly #1 – as a senior. Remember, he’s a soccer player who;s still learning how to play basketball. He’s only going to improve.

Gorgui knows this.
He’ll stay four years, if for no other reason than to make us happy. The Dieng abides.

Call me crazy
But I think if Gorgs keeps playing the way he’s playing and improving the way he’s improving, he could easily go pro after this year. I know he likes us, but he’d also probably like the chance to make a million dollars next year playing basketball. I’d be really surprised to see him stay for his senior year.

Stop worrying, o ye of little faith
Could and would are two different things. Gorgui is not going anywhere until he graduates.

Maybe, then again history has shown us that no one can predict when a player will leave when there is even a chance at substantial money.
Tellya what
If Gorgui leaves for the NBA without a degree, I will buy a beer for every Chronicloid who agrees now to buy ME a beer if he graduates before leaving.

Gorgui isn't going anywhere
He will not leave until he graduates, mark my words. He’s here for an education first.
I can see him graduating in 3, then going to the NBA
like Emeka Okafor did. (after winning a title)

Gorgui doesn't need basketball to make a million dollars
I read somewhere that he’s smarter than the average beach body having, gummy bear eating, Shot blocking machine. God, I love me some Gorgs.
Top 10 in the rankings. #1 in our hearts.
Plus, Gorgui has his own top 10. Top 10 having Gorgui is top 10 material.
Stout Out!
Top 10 Gorgs is totally top 10 Gorgs.
Also, from everything we hear, the whole idea behind his coming to college was to get that education. From what I understand, his family barely cared about basketball when he began, and while they’re rooting him on, they are singularly focused on the education. This doesn’t mean they have direct control over Gorgs, or that it wouldn’t be the best financial move for him to go early, but these are strong influences on him staying. He is the exact opposite of every other selfish “you are special, so get the money” AAU kid who goes pro these days.
He will be here at least one more year!
From what I have heard his family is “well” off so money inst an issue like it was for Cisco or other players. On the other hand I would assume he graduates in 3 years since he is “Steve Jobs” smart! (too soon?) Once he gets the degree he is headed to the League!
I think he'll stay for his junior year
Then he could move into the top 10-15 overral prospects.
Not sure why Perry Jones III is there, he’s not really a center.
Yes, that is Mike Marra.

That list clearly is not a draft projection
As Slim pointed out above, Perry Jones isn’t a Center, neither is Sullinger, or Young.
Gorgui is very undersized as a center in the NBA. at 6’10"ish, he need to be a solid 260 to play in the NBA as a center. If he were over 7’ then he might be able to play at this weight. Rick knows this and he is actually listening to Rick. He’s not going anywhere until he is ready, and he’s not ready for anything but starting at center for an elite college basketball team.
Whether he wants 4 years of education or not, he’s smart enough to know that if he waits to go to the NBA until he is ready to contribute, he will have a longer career than if he goes early and gets glued to the bench somewhere as a project. He need to go down to houston and hang out with Hakeen Olajuwan this summer to learn his moves, and come back as both an offensive and defensive force next year.
No it is not a draft projection. It is a list of who rivals.com sees as the 10 best "centers" in the college game right now.
Now, it maybe a crappy list, but it is a good talking point to discuss how Dieng compares with his peers and whether he is ready for the NBA draft. A look at a lot of NBA draft projections will show some big men in the first and second round that I think Dieng is just better than right now, whether he needs 20 pounds or not.
An extra bit of weight does not make you better; no matter what Pitino says. Clear case in point is Drummond who is listed as 6’10" 270lbs and got owned by Dieng. NBA scouts look at talent/potential and Dieng is looking more and more like he has both.
If the Cards can hang a NC banner in the next 2 seasons with Gorgui here,
then he’ll go down as the best player ever @ UL. There will be no issue in having his statue erected and UL will become a prime destination for top big men who want to go to NBA.
the Dr would like to have a word with you
“best ever” is a stretch, even if Gorgs was part of 2 NC banners. Griff was so awesome, so revolutionary, and meant so much to this fanbase that it’s hard to imagine anyone removing him from the top spot. ever.
He may not even bcome the best UL center ever—Pervis’s mediocre professional career seems to dampen people’s memory of him, but he was an absolute beast as a college player before he blew out his knee.

I knew it wouldn't be long before Griff was mentioned, lol.
As soon as I hit post, I realized I should have said “one of the best players.” Thanks for putting me in line.
Best big man?

Is that a question or questioning my comment?
Gorgui is getting better and better each game. If he’s here 4 years and continues to improve I don’t think it’s too far fetched that he finishes as best big in UL history. He obviously has some massive shoes to fill, but I’m saying it’s possible.
I see what you mean and I mostly agree
There’s a group of elite alums who simply shouldn’t be compared or ranked.
The ability and performance increases Gorgui displays since his first game are nothing short of staggering. If you graphed that improvement trend over the next season or two and he maintained the same pace of improvement, it stands to reason he’d be POY candidate leading UL to titles.
It was a suggestion as to how to make your "best ever" statement true

Thanks
One should be careful around these parts about making “best ever” comments. Too much knowledge of the program and passionate fans. Love this site, even when I get put in my place.
Never saw Tyra play but I can sure make a good case for Wes.
Unbelievable rebounder and Chane reminds me so much of him. Just hope Chane turns out to be half as good.

Here is a mock draft for a better discussion: http://nbadraft.net/2012mock_draft
Some big men on the list that Gorgui is better than:
1. Gates (can’t wait until we play Cinci)
2. Pope (I was gonna get drafted, but I got high…)
3. Ezeli (SEC centers are weak)
4. Sidney
5. Sacre
6. Sims
These are all the guys I feel positive Deing would smash in the post. Not to mention we get Syracuse twice. I got a feeling Fab Melo is gonna get Dienged up. When that happens, NBA draft projections gonna go wild.
Gorgui is basically Serge Ibaka... only better offensively. Which is pretty awesome

Not really a good comparision
Ibaka is much more athletic and Gorgui is more skilled offensively (or definitely will be). Apples and oranges, imo.
