West Virginia cancels on Florida State. New possible opponent?
So yesterday West Virginia announced that they will be coughing up an additional $350,000 to back out of a home and home series with Florida State. We can now add the Seminoles to the list of teams ticked off at WVU for this selfish and bassackwards way of handling the conference mix up.
Jurich has been able to pull a home and home series with them before and who can forget the many metro conference battles we had with them in the past. Our athletic programs are familiar with each other, and Florida State is looking to get a schedule boost to go with their mediocre ACC schedule while still adding a "winnable" game. Both schools will be in desperate need for a quick fix to the schedule if the Mountaineers dip out in the fashion that they and the Big 12* are expecting. Any chance U of L gets to play in the state of Florida we need to take advantage of. That is like a free recruiting trip for CCS and company. It is something I hope we at least make an attempt at and would be amazing if Tom could pull this off. Your thoughts??

The FSU-WVU game that was cancelled was scheduled for Sep 8th this year
If FSU is looking for another opponent that weekend, U of L would have to reschedule with Missouri State, which is also scheduled for Sep 8th.

not doubting but curious
I just went to www.uoflsports.com and they don’t have this fall’s schedule up yet. Do you have it and if so could you post it?
I would absolutley love it if that happened.
Not quite sure how I feel about our chances of winning such a game, though.
You are right if west virginia stays in the big east
but West Virginia is making this move to make room for a Big 12 schedule meaning we are going to have an opening in the schedule that we will need to fill quickly. I know we have been mistreated on the scheduling side of things by teams like gerogia and wvu buying out games against us but would you be against buying out the Missouri State game to play FSU? I would be for it. I cant believe im talkin football in Feb!
very true
wasnt intending to be one giant idea but more so several possibilities to make it happen. maybe reschedule missouri state for a different date, who knows. The cards need to make some moves to get on the big stage again as much as possible. losing WVU would take away probably our biggest game so i think we need to fill that spot with somebody just as good if not better and this would be our best chance.
well..
i think we the money the schhols would make from the game i think we could afford to move the game. But i agree we need the big stage, but dont sleep on Cincy and South Florida they both have a chance to be very good and ranked next season.
Fill it with FIU or Marshall if they are not already on the schedule.
We need another shot at beating them.
I think we are playing at fiu this year

you should give us more credit
we’ve made great strides our first two seasons. I think this would be a great game and its a game that can be stolen because it one of the first games if not the first game of the season if that date were to stand and with how we play defense i would give us a shot in any game
Indeed.
Still think we are a year away from being scary good. I think we have the potential to be pretty good this year though.
As the BCS keeps showing us, beating a cupcake is better than losing to a good team. Until the BCS changes, let’s beat cupcakes.

couldnt agree with you more
I just brought up this same point in my last post. I think we are in need a high profile game to look forwar to like Miami or the old FSU games. If west virginia leaves this would be just the game we need as a measuring stick. Now i dont believe it would matter too much about the scheduling. Because it so early the games can me moved around to make it work and with all the florida boys we recruit and have on roster it would make for a good game.
correct me if I'm wrong
But wvu was going to FSU this year and coming to us. I’d love to play FSU, but I’m not sure how they’d fill the void that wvu would be leaving

The OP was about *us* filling the void WVU would leave in FSU's schedule
We’d have to buy out the Missouri State game, and we would still need another game to fill out our own schedule. But I’d love to see it happen. I think we’d have a chance to pull off the upset, and it would be a “statement” win. As for the BCS, Im not worried. We will get the Big East’s AQ berth.

Yeah, win or lose
I’d love to see that game this year. There would be a ton of talent in that game from the Miami area alone. A win would be huge, but a loss really wouldn’t hurt that bad in the big scheme of things.
Just saw a list of the top 50 recruits for 2012 and FSU had the most of any school (6) and 3 of the top 10.
Our highest ranked guy was Nick Dawson at #89. Don’t get me wrong, I think we will have a very good team and do very well next year, but we still should be realistic.
I think we may be a year or two away from competing against that.

Not like FSU was lighting it up last year
Why are people worried about playing them?
I agree with Will
They had the number one class last year and had a disappointing year. I definitely don’t want to see everyone get the attitude we’ve had in basketball for years now. You know, the wait until next year, wait until next year. We need to start scheduling top level talent teams asap. We would be an underdog at FSU but I’m not sure we’d be one at PJCS. Bring on the ‘Noles, Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, whoever. We might not win, but by god we’ll go down fighting.
They also have another great class coming in (3 of the top 10 players and 6 of the top 50)
Our highest ranked guy is #89 and we only have him (that’s 1) in the top 100. I would love to think that we are competitive with the top level programs, but the reality is that we are not…………yet!

I'm sorry Carolina, but I disagree
If you are only looking at the rankings then yes, we are not ready. But last time I checked, these games are played on football fields, with a teams full of football players. Not with computers, Rivals/Scout/ESPN rankings, and/or analysts deciding the games’ outcome. I’m no where the stat guy that you have proven yourself to be, so you may be able to dig up some statistical info to prove me wrong, but we aren’t going to do ourselves any favors by shying away from playing top tier teams and playing the likes of Missouri St.
Not saying we should shy away. Let's go ahead and schedule some decent teams.
Also not saying that we wouldn’t be competitive and don’t have a punchers chance to win because we do. Just saying that talent wise we are not yet in this league.

Next year will be the first year that the talent pool locally is full of extremely good players
And if we can start receiving commits from our local guys when they are 3-4 stars and still keep up the success in FL/GA/AL/OH, then we’ll start being highly ranked like those Florida schools. The top classes seem to have the richest talent within their state and longevity on their coaching staff. I’ve wondered if those advantages for the top schools that UL lacks, is why some of our top talent somehow lose a star when they commit here.
Blasphamy, but...
We’ve been beating weak Big East schools. The athletes that FSU has would run us off the field. Charlie has been coaching us up, but our great recruiting classes would be down years for the big guys.
Remember the Beef Bowl!
Sadly this is true. FSU has 13 top 100 guys in their last 2 classes. We have 2.
Charlie is doing a great job but facts are facts and we are not in this class ……………………yet!

We hear you
they have top 100 players, they have top 50 players. ron zook has gotten player after player to come to illinois. notre dame gets top classes every year and still underachieves. look at the rankings of the guys on our orange bowl team and then use those rankings to determine how many wins we should have gotten. I am not understanding the lack of confidence but its whatever.
Read somewhere (Crawford?) about rankings
The top 20 in basketball have a very high percentage who become top players but 40& of the top 150 in football don’t pan out. Football player rankings are far less accurate.
Truce!! I Agree with cardchomp
There just happens to be a lot of programs who build up their programs without top espn top 150 athletes. Boise state is a perfect example they are just now starting to get great high school players but before they had to do just develop players. And when they had a chance to showcase their talent they did and they won. I forget the year but that year they beat oklahoma in that bowl game. And even louisville with Petrino we werent getting a bunch of guys at first but he still built the program up to compete with a program like miami who doesnt have to leave home to get great players. And Florida State doesnt scare me from either side of the ball and i dont think that much of their offense to say that they could run us off the field.
It'd be a big challenge VERY early in the season.
Not sure we could make it work, but if we did play them; it’d be a great game.
I’m not really leaning one way or the other.
