The current version of Joe Lunardi's Brackets would be the absolute best case scenario for us. Here's why I think so.
Obviously, I'm assuming that we don't flame out of the dance in the first round three years in a row. I mean, is that even statistically possible? So we win our opening round game and then get past a scrappy and overachieving Wichita State Shockers team that many consider this year's best mid-major. A respectable second-round win and a sweet sixteen berth means that the season was not unsuccesful, right?
So now we've got a date with the evil empire with absolutely nothing to lose. And I think we could win. Not sure that we would win, but with all due respect to Kentucky because they are a very good basketball team, I know we could win.
But should the fighting unibrows survive a "leave it all on the floor" type rivalry game on a Friday, the exhausted and drained bluenecks would likely have to get through a pretty talented North Carolina team on Sunday. Beat Pitino and Roy Williams twice in the same weekend, each for the second time in a single season? That's a hell of a tough way to get to the final four for them.
So I'm really hoping for a Sweet Sixteen game with UK. If we win, well, it would be proof of a higher power in the universe. But if we lost, I really think that we are the only team in America that could completely wipe them out. Physically, emotionally, and mentally. It's not quite Vader vs. Obi Wan, but striking us down would be the beginning of the end for them. The Big Blue Bandwagon would have put so much pressure on that team that a blowout loss in the elite eight would be nearly impossible to avoid. Our season ends with a sweet sixteen and someone (ANYONE) other than yUK winns the national championship. I'll take it.
