Big Games

The UC and USF games are huge. Georgetown is going to have a tough time winning at ND and Marquette.

Every one we've lost was stupid.

Besides Providence, we were in a position to win every other league game and didn’t close

ALL HAIL

We could have lost to WVU or Vandy

So, at least we won those.

This year we’re 4-3 in games decided by 5 or fewer (including depaul since regulation ended tied). For comparison purposes 2010-2011 was 6-5, 2009-2010 was 0-3, and 2008-2009 was 4-1.

To a certain extent, close games are crap shoots. The mark of a good team is blowing out teams, not winning close games. IMO, its more of a luck factor. The current team is neither lucky nor unlucky. Or, perhaps, neither better nor worse at closing out games than opponents.

by johnnyjoejohnson on Feb 22, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly - great teams avoid this problem by not playing very many close games

We’ve done reasonably well in close games this year. But it would be better if we played fewer close games (so long as we’re the team administering the beating).

by cardsinindy2010 on Feb 22, 2012 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

pretty sure...

usf will lose 3 out of their next 4 games. georgetown blowout last night kind of shocked me. i’m still not a believer in seton hall. nor am i buying into the notre dame miracle quite yet. I like our chances. For more then big east seeding, we need to get 3 out of 4

by the.only.brent on Feb 22, 2012 9:37 AM EST reply actions

i just dont want another good showing in the big east, and then 1 and done in the big dance, honestly

by the.only.brent on Feb 22, 2012 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

This

I feel like when the team does well in the Big East, but doesn’t win the title (like getting to but losing the final last year), they get stuck on what might have been (and we do, too) and they can’t focus on the first game in the Big Dance.

by TheV!lle on Feb 22, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

its all a conspiracy!!!

i really do think the selection committee “tries” to create drama. especially with the 5-12 seeds! louisville was a poor rebounding team last year. they are paired up with the top rebounder in d1 basketball…everyone was shocked when louisville went down. I thought we wouldve won, but i didnt think it was going to be easy.

true

and they’ll put us in the same bracket with murray state

Freakin' Free Throws

We make them against ND, GTown, and Cuse and we are 13-2 and only one game back of Cuse with a leg up on the tie breaker. And why don’t any of our guys shoot free throws in warm ups?

by cbcard on Feb 22, 2012 9:54 AM EST reply actions

We'd actually be in first

That’d put Cuse at 13-2 as well and we’d have the tie breaker. If only if only…..

by indianacardfan on Feb 22, 2012 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Can't believe USF isn't even in most brackets

I think they’re better than most people think. Most of their losses came at the begining of the year and I think they were dealing with injuries. After Gtown’s loss last night I feel like we have a much more realistic shot at a double bye

by Cards86 on Feb 22, 2012 9:59 AM EST reply actions

Not trying to knock USF too much because they've had a great season, but

They’ve largely taken advantage of some of the lesser teams in the conference. They don’t have any wins against a team with a winning record in conference (then again, neither has U of L).

Combined BE records of the teams they’ve beaten: 29-76
Combined BE records of teams they’ve lost to: 39-19
Combined BE records of teams they have yet to play: 39-18

Something tells me we’ll know a lot more about the Bulls after this final stretch of games that they have

by Gettin Dieng-y With It on Feb 22, 2012 10:20 AM EST reply actions

UofL is 0-5 against the Top 25

Our only win against a team getting votes is the Vandy win and they are ranked about 34th. Playing teams close and actually winning are two different things unfortunately.

by cbcard on Feb 22, 2012 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

We are 2-4 against top 25 RPI teams. 4-1 against RPI teams 26-50.

The 4 top 25 losses were by a total of 22 points, all to teams in the RPI top 13.

We haven’t beaten anyone in the top 25 of the human polls, but the RPI paints a decent picture of us and implies we’re probably ranked accurately by the media/coaches.

I'm kinda with CRP on this one

Getting a single bye, as opposed to a double bye, could provide Wayne with an extra game of playing time. We will need him in the NCAA tournament for length, scoring, and subbing out Chris and Kyle when they get tired. The more he understands the D we play, the better off we’ll be.

I think the Cards have at least an Elite 8 run in them this year. Like Vanetti keeps preaching, karma is going to come around for the Cards this year, like it did for UK last year.

by Cards08 on Feb 22, 2012 11:02 AM EST reply actions

I'm good with that as long as we win out and have that positive momentum going for us.

If those above us win out too or have the tie breaker with the same record, then fine because I too think an extra game might be a plus.

by Carolina Cardinal on Feb 22, 2012 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

CPR is full of crap.

It only gets you an extra game IF you get to the championship game. If you lose the first or second game it makes no difference.

Now I know some of you will get upset and say I am hating on RP, but really…this is just total spin and BS. Cannot call it anything else. Lots of people will soak it up though.

by scorpiocard on Feb 22, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Of course it's true that if you don't win, it doesn't get you any extra games

I think everybody gets that. But I can call it something other than “total spin and BS” without being one of the poor, ignorant masses that you seem to think the rest of us to be. I would prefer a top-4 seed, but if being a lower seed results in an extra game, I would be fine with that too.

And I know you’re tough on CRP, but can we leave CPR out of this?

by cardsinindy2010 on Feb 22, 2012 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

he is correct

The extra game for Wayne is THE most important thing heading into the ncaa. I don’t think this is Rick Speak at all. It’s the truth.

by redbirdgang on Feb 22, 2012 12:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Without SVT, I find it hard to see "at least" an Elite 8 in us

I think, the way we are, at least a Sweet 16 run might be in us. The importance of SVT is not only to sub for Gorgs if he’s in foul trouble, but to really give him a spell and provide a serviceable player at the 5. The sad thing is, if he’s not back before the BET, which it doesn’t look like, he might be no more effective than Price.

by BayAreaCard on Feb 22, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

As a 4 seed or better, we would be expected to make it to the Sweet 16

I just expect at least 1 upset win from the Cards, as we’re due for one since we’ve been so close all year and I feel karma is going to be coming around for us in the next few weeks. Two years in a row of 1st rd exits is going to have CRP and company in formidable form.

by Cards08 on Feb 22, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Know what's not a great thing?

This team that has to wear helmets in practice and guys get fat by drinking milk and people nearly die every other game playing more of them than necessary in the Big East Tournament. I love the tournament, but I would rather be a top 4 seed and play the important games than see Siva get decapitated against St John’s

by cardscott5 on Feb 22, 2012 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

I should have clarified that I hope we win out, because a win at Syracuse could be huge in jumping up a seed.

by Cards08 on Feb 22, 2012 11:15 AM EST reply actions

#2 Seed

If this team can somehow win out, they could jump all the way to a #2 seed. If Duke can be considered a #1 seed, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that winning out could net a #1 seed as well. Especially if they win two against Syracuse. I’m not saying it will happen, but going from firing CRP in January to a #2 seed would be a fantastic finish, IMHO.

by Patticardfan on Feb 22, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

A #2 seed would require beating the "right" teams in the BET tourney.

Personally, I think the ceiling for this team is a #3 seed and that we end up as a #4 or #5.

by Remote Cardinal on Feb 22, 2012 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

Don't disagree

however, winning out moves them up 2 lines.

by Patticardfan on Feb 22, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Winning out is a practical impossibility

Let’s assume for the sake of argument that the likelihood of beating our remaining opponents is: 90% to beat Pitt, 90% to beat USF, 75% to beat Cincy, and 50% to beat Syracuse. I think that’s being very optimistic, but it leaves us with about a 30% chance to win out in the regular season. Then we have to beat three more teams, likely including Syracuse, to get through the BET. Call that another 50%, 75%, and 90% chance (again being very optimistic) and we’re down to a 10% chance. If you make more reasonable assumptions, it drops much lower. Don’t get me wrong: I’d love to see the Cards win out. But it is almost certain not to happen.

Has anyone seem what KenPom said about us

On the CJ website? Pretty much predicted another early exit from the dance for us.

by LouisvilleSklardinalFAN02 on Feb 22, 2012 11:56 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Or most likely even against a pretty good team

But I think adding the new offensive sets we ran against DePaul could be very, very helpful in minimizing the dry spells. It gives our opponents a lot more to have to defend and should get the ball into the hands of the scorers more easily.

Any good defensive team, and most who make it the big dance are, can shut down our one dimensional pick and roll for four or five minutes at a time and have done so this year. But these new sets will make them play us more honest. I just can’t understand why we went this far into the season (and with only one freshman playing) to integrate them into our offense.

by cbcard on Feb 22, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed re the new sets

Wish we would have started running them earlier in the year, but I am happy to see them. If Wayne can get a little stronger before year’s end, I think the ability to sub him plus the new offensive sets should help to relieve our offensive droughts.

This team will be basically impossible to predict going into the NCAAT. Our offensive fragility could result in another first-round exit, or our defense (with just enough offense) could carry us to 2-3 wins.

I do hope that next year at this time, we’re no longer discussing whether we can get 2-3 wins, but whether we can get 4-6.

by cardsinindy2010 on Feb 22, 2012 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

South Florida?? Really?

I still cant get over the fact they are 11-4. I imagine they, like UL, collect most of their wins from the bottom & not the top of the league. Makes me feel queasy about March Madness.

Who have we beat really??? (rhetoric)
