Adidas or Nike?
Should Louisville switch to Nike? It seems like our basketball program has lost some good recruits possibly because we are not a Nike school (which is stupid), and there is no doubt that Nike makes better uniforms. I don't know about the safety statistics for each companies equipment, but with all of the injuries we have had lately, would it be smart to switch to a more prominent company that could help with recruiting, or stick with the tradition with Adidas? What do you all think?

I'd rather see them go with Nike
Primarily because I’ve heard insiders blame adidas’ shoes for our ankle/knee injuries over the years. Of course, can’t prove any truth to that, but I have heard that theory spring up off and on for years.

My response to that is always the same: We aren't the only school that wears adidas.
If the shoes were causing issues, where are the multitude of injuries at ND, UCLA, Cincy, or Tennessee? It wouldn’t just be use if it was a shoe problem.

I ran track at UL for 4 years
And the adidas shoes gave me a consistent shin splints and calf problems. Switched to Asics after my time was over and problems are gone.
Losing recruits over our apparel is russ-diculous,
but sadly, it’s a factor and reality in recruiting these days. I say, go with Nike or Jordan Brand.
adidas is a German company
where soccer is the main sport. I’d want an American company that focuses on the primary American sports of basketball and football.
Well, actually . . . .
There were two brothers, both were Nazis. The one who ran adidas was not a Nazi soldier. His brother was, and after a major rift between them the Nazi soldier went on to found and run Puma. Really not trying to be a smart ass know it all, I just think the story is kind of interesting.
Not saying I didn't mess that up a little,
but an article I read years ago stated that they were both Nazi soldiers. Funny though, the rift was one of the brothers calling an allied bomb attack “dirty bastards” and the other brother and wife thought they were referring to them when they climbed in the others bomb shelter.
I'm crushed...
I thought Puma© was an Italian apparel company until I read your post, then wiki’d that shhh…looks as if the Dassler bros each had a hand into starting/participating in the 2 apparel companies. Pretty interesting trivia.

no offense, because you probably didn't know...
but actually, Nike is the big player in footwear and apparel in soccer, not adidas
no only this, but Nike’s main two sports in sales and investments for footwear are in fact running and soccer… not football or basketball
not to mention the fact that many different reports revealed both adidas and nike used the same sweatshops to produce their products, side-by-side

nike
would have a field day with louisville. there would be more awesome clothes released in a month for the public than adidas has done their entire contract. just sayin’
For real
They could do some kick-ass designs with Louisville.
But adidas has the gloves
so there’s that.

I forsee a one-man sponsorship deal coming soon from RUSSell Athletic
Guess who it’s for
It's not the apparel, it's the money.
If you think guys are going to Nike schools because they like the swoosh, you’re wrong. They’re going to Nike schools because they’ve been to elite Nike camps, met with Nike managers, been introduced to NBA players/coaches/scouts/agents through Nike employees, and most likely taken a fair amount of money from the company as well. I would bet that Adidas and reebok do this too, they just aren’t anywhere near as good at it as Nike is.
its gotta be nike. ive been saying this for a while now,
nike makes vastly superior products. and that what kids want to wear. my whole life ive thought there was only one brand for basketball and its nike. im only 22 so i dont think i am out of touch with what these 18 year olds want. they want the same thing i wanted in highschool. they want the coolest looking stuff that also performs at a high level. adidas is a soccer brand! their basketball shoes are ugly as can be, and their uni’s are no better.
if you think that brands have nothing to do with recruiting then i think you are a little out of touch. i wouldn’t be surprised if a five star recruit who is having a lot of trouble deciding on whether to commit to us or uk chooses which uni’s look the coolest. heck, last night i was watching the uk/miss st. game and anthony davis and terrence jones were wearing jordan 10’s. those shoes are some of my favorite jordans and they retail for $160. you think they purchased those shoes on their own or nike gave the shoes to them? i think we all know the answer to that question.
kids want to wear nike stuff and there’s no getting around that. lets make the switch so we can eliminate any and all possible reasons why a quality recruit would choose someone else over us. Go Cards! Beat UC!!
Anthony Davis is ugly.
Have to say I am becoming a Nike convert
A big part of that is cuz I moved out here to Nike land (Portland) and see what Nike has done to the sports here. Not just Oregon, but at the HS level. We need that level of support back home in the Ville.
My main reason is that I want Louisville to Play in Oregon again so I can see them… Home and home in all sports !!!
I think this is all stupid.
Do we really want the kids who are obsessed with the brand on all the FREE shit they are getting? I know the AAU circuit and recruiting is all tied up with the shit, which is why FW didn’t get invited to any more Nike Elite camps after he committed to us, but who cares. IF these players are great enough and make it to a pro career, your apparel association in college means shit. John Wall wears Reebok. Brandon Knight wears Adidas.
Personally, I like being one of the bigger programs with Adidas. Nike wouldn’t give a shit about us in football, and if they do pay attention to us in basketball, do we really want something like they recently did: Grey uniforms with ugly neon team colors?
I’m not denying that apparel associations matter to high school kids, I just don’t think it’s a game our AD should worry about playing. We’ve had great success across all of our sports, and I don’t think the apparel makes a different at all.

Rick said it affects recruiting big time. He didn't say what it was that affected it, but he very clearly
confirmed that it matters. I don’t see how it couldn’t be a huge issue.

Nike sponsors a ton of AAU basketball
They are involved at the grass roots level. Phil Knight is smart and has tied Nike at the grassroots level which binds loyalty at a young age. Talking to a former Nike Project Manager confirmed this was a strategic direction about 15 years ago and you are seeing its affects today.
Have to say it has worked. Kids here in the Northwest all sport Elite gear at all events. My son wore his Addidas flops to a ball game and you would have thought he pooped on the floor… lol.
It doesn’t surprise me this is an influencing factor.
I would go for Nike, but.....
Adidas has stepped up their game with fan clothing over the past year or so. Also, we’re forgetting about UA. I wouldn’t mind seeing UofL going to UA.

The adidas deal was predicated on all sports being coverred
Nike would only provide gear for basketball(both) and football, but other sports would have to purchase gear. This was the best deal for all sports and benefits every sport including those basketball and football because they have more money overall
Is that what the actual agreement is?
Then this does make the most sense. No reason to sell out all the other sports for football and basketball.
by CardinalDude on Feb 22, 2012 1:56 PM EST up reply actions
Nike
Adidas just doesn’t really have anything special when it comes to uniforms. But Louisville won’t switch to nike just for looks or fan gear. Whichever brand is best when it comes to saving money is who UofL will go with. Which I guess won’t kill us.
Overall Adidas is better
honestly i think we should be among the nation’s top in gear for athletes and fans with adidas but it’s not the case at the moment, i really don’t know why adidas hasn’t used the dunking bird logo that we have cause it’s by far top 3 logo that i’ve seen personally in college.
It's the shirt link Mike posted in Tuesday's notes.
They sell that shirt in a few different colors around town.

I'm gonna kill, gonna rape and i'm gonna eat his red costume, just you wait and see....
that the NFL contract w/ Reebok will come to an end & Nike will be taking over. Majority of teams will be making a HUGE switch over to the more flamboyant uni like that of Oregon Ducks. This is all courtesy of Phil H. Knight & his design teams.
If I wasn’t on my iPhone I would link a few pics to verify, but its pretty scary shh. Thank God the Bears aren’t planning on joining in. Sticking to the old fashioned navy blue, burnt orange & white.
As far as college goes/UofL, I’m all for whatever. Just win a f’n championship plz. At that point, no one remembers what the hell you were wearing.

I heard there will be no changes with any of the uniforms.
Unless it’s with a whole new logo scheme, like the Panthers. It might happen, but not any time soon.

Nike Is Just. Plain. AWFUL.
Nike is awful. They butcher tradition and their uniforms are hideous.
I LOVE Adidas. Adidas embraces tradition. Case in point: Indiana’s uniforms, Kansas’ uniforms, UCLA’s uniforms. Three of the best in college basketball. Probably the three best, period. All Adidas. Look at the NBA’s uniforms. The Celtics. The Bulls. Classic. All Adidas.
I LOVE U of L’s uniforms. Last season’s were my all-time favorites. This season’s are pretty much the same, though with a wider shoulder cut (not as good as last season’s). What do I like best about our Uniforms? The cut, or the tailoring. They’re not painted on like Nike’s, with parachute shorts to compliment the Nike jerseys. I also like our bird logo on the shorts, and I love the darker hue of red (crimson). Everything with nike is bright and cheesy.
LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT NIKE!!…
As a UK grad/alum, the only thing that sickens me more than them hiring the Vacater is when they went to Nike my freshman year of college. It’s been downhill since. First, they added Silver, around 1999, 2000. Okay? Silver! Silver isn’t one of UK’s colors! Got it? Then, in the worst move EVER, they butchered the logo. Goodbye ‘K’. Goodbye UK. Goodbye Wildcat logo(s). (You would NEVER know Kentucky are the Wildcats because there isn’t a Wildcat to be seen anywhere! Why?…) Hello scrunched-up, lowercase, interlocking ‘uk’. Yeah, we get it, try to be more like North Carolina. Interlock that shi$. Then, just when I thought they made the worst move ever, the shade of blue has progressively gotten worse in Lexington. The OFFICIAL school colors are Royal Blue and Navy – this is fact. Call the school’s administration. Over the past decade, Nike has managed to turn UK’s official color into a retina-burning, bright neon blue. I wanna puke every time I see that color blue (and throw Calipari into the mix and it’s straight up nausea).
Okay, so if you wanna be like Kentucky, if you wanna really butcher things up, sure, let’s go to Nike. (But I can tell you this, it ain’t happening while Pitino’s coaching here. He hates Nike. There is a God.)
Two More Things:
Any kid who is stupid enough to go to a school because of the shoes it wears, I don’t want that kid. Case in point: Wayne Blackshear. He did what he wanted. I’ll take more Waynes and less of the devil on Earth (Nike).
And if you’re still not convinced Nike has no style or taste, just Google Image the new USA team basketball uniforms. After you throw up, check back with me.
End rant. Yeah, not a fan of Nike.

Personally, I like the USA jerseys
but that may be because I am younger (although I don’t know your age, but I’m assuming because a lot of people my age like the nike designs) 1 thing I do know, is that Nike has no say in whether or not they can change the logo. The uniform colors might look different, but they can’t just totally change everything.
Fair point about the USA Jerseys...
Those look awful – clearly they’re trying to appeal to a younger urban demographic.
Although the “no sense of tradition” thing I feel has more to do with the client… take the USA Hockey jerseys… Lace up is awesome and its very good looking and classic.

just for the fan apparel. It’s almost impossible to find a decent looking adidas shirt, meanwhile Nike schools have so much to choose from. But that’s just me I guess.

Bottom line peeps!
appearance matters to young kids…ask any of them. If you got teenagers you know what i’m talking about. If you play basketball at any level from youth thru high school what do all the kids wear on there feat? Nikes or Jordans.
True story: The day of the Syracuse game (the heartbreaking loss) my wife and co-workers were on there lunch hour and she meets and greets none other than sharp shooting Chris Smith. Got a picture of course and what was the young man wearing? One would think with all the free adidas shit they get that would be his get up. Not so fast my friend. He was wearing a grey Nike fleece vest with grey matching sweatpants and Jordans on his feet. Nobody young and a baller buys adidas. Jordan and Nike is a staple of young american culture and style and UofL is stupid not to change if given the chance. Go CARDS holla
finally someone know what ive been talking about^
Anthony Davis is ugly.

Nike because that's what the kids want
And it can only help with recruiting.
That said, I have to relate a story. My 10-year-old son is a soccer and basketball player. During soccer practice he hurt his ankle and after a couple of weeks with it not getting better we took him the doctor, first his GP then a specialist. The podiatrist diagnosed an injured tendon around the growth plate in his ankle. His solution? Stretches, cushioned heel pads and New Balance shoes. His words, “Nikes are terrible shoes.” He said they have no support for the feet. My son now wears New Balance in soccer cleats, basketball shoes and everday tennis shoes and his ankle has finally healed.
As a teen, I never found Nike running shoes or soccer cleats that worked well with my feet
In the 90s, their running shoes were too narrow for my feet and I could find other shoes like New Balance in wider sizes much easier at places like Swags in Louisville. Same for soccer cleats, been an Adidas/Puma fan after Umbro/Nike gave me problems. Maybe they’ve improved since then. Basketball-wise though, I’ve always worn Nike high tops.
In the mid-90s, our high school basketball team wore Converse R.A.W Energy shoes until the gel in the bottom layer of the shoes started bursting and causing minor injuries. I’m almost certain UK and U of L used these same shoes around that time and had similar issues before switching to a different Converse model like we had to. Anyways, after that year, I switched to Nike mids/high tops for basketball and haven’t had an issue since.

Sorry about your son
and hope he’s good now. I’m not much into soccer so i have no voice or experience to do so but i do have a question. From what i’ve watched and seen on a soccer field these players really move fast and cut and stop and juke all game long not to mention the bangs and brusies from other opposing players .Now you mentioned your sons shoes being a problem well why do they all wear low-top shoes with that much going on with there feet. Looks like to me some shoe company would make a hi-top shoe for support. I’m sure too that every ones feet are different than the next.
Range of motion, flexibility
In soccer one uses their feet to control/pass/shoot the ball, therefore range of motion would be diminished if wearing a mass produced high top boot.
Most players with weak or injured ankles have a trainer wrap them with a relatively flexible material, fitted to their specific anatomical shape and pain/flexibility threshold. I’ve used an athletic ankle support with laces while playing indoor soccer because the turf was so stiff. Both of these methods reduce one’s “touch” on the ball, but less so than a high top boot made for a generic foot/ankle.
by UL is my hot hot sex on Feb 23, 2012 4:02 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly what hothot said.
I can’t imagine how awful my punts would have been when I played if I had a hi-top shoe. It just isn’t realistic to have one in soccer because you rely on your ankle so much.
That said, adidas/Puma for soccer! Nike is awful for cleats. And I know this has gone off on a tangent about soccer, but someone else mentioned that ALL sports here are under adidas. Nike just doesn’t have the gear for a school where ALL of their sports are competitive for championships.
