The Best Rivalry

Well ESPN ranks Duke and UNC as the greatest college basketball rivalry. I've read Rick Bozich column giving reasons why the UofL-UK rivalry is better. I don't know how serious Bozich was being or how thorough he was on researching his facts however after engaging in a mini-debate on Facebook I wanted to ask Cardinal Nation and other CC'ers what they think is the best rivalry. I could offer my opinion but I am pretty bias. I would love to hear some objectivity. Thanks.

Rofl.

You won’t get any objectivity asking us. All us cards fan think the UK/UofL rivalry is the best. I don’t think I need to go through the reasons why either.

Yes.

See Mike’s annual essay on the subject.

by Loouhvul on Feb 12, 2012 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

Mike has presented an eloquent argument for UofL-UK being the top rivalry.

And then he went and wrote that piece about Duke-UNC being college basketball’s “defining rivalry.”

Duke's fanbase is VERY small...

And by fanbase, I mean people who have actual ties to duke.. not bandwagon fans

Louisville has many fewer fans than UK, but the ratio of UNC fans to Duke fans is something like 15:1

by Taquan on Feb 11, 2012 9:54 PM EST reply actions

(continued)

UofL and UK fans have that constant, intense banter and bickering- year round.

I just dont see that aspect in the duke-unc rivalry

by Taquan on Feb 11, 2012 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

ppl will always say unc vs duke

because it’s always thrust down your throat when I watch the wide world of sports. also, most of the talking heads are from those schools, good luck with that. some would say the titles (honest argument) but I think it’s more of the nba players both teams have in the league. when we play UK its at a time where there’s a lot going (NBA, NFL playoffs) not a lot of focus. plus those guys play like 2 or 3 times. kinda lame if u ask me.

Everybody will say Duke UNC

because they have had more recent success compared to UL/UK. But the fact is that recent success is one very small part of a rivalry. UL/UK is a constant year-round debate. We also hate each other in football, and even women’s basketball. We target the same recruits, and UL/UK only play once a year, unlike Duke/UNC who play each other at least twice a year, most of the time 3 times a year during the ACC tournament.

and baseball

and golf, and tennis, and soccer, and cheer, and synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics and Chinese checkers. Actually you probably could have just stopped at “we hate each other.”

This rivalry is the best in the nation..........for UK fans.

I’m the biggest Card fan but 3 straight losses to UK is starting to diminish this rivalry.

by jrcard on Feb 12, 2012 10:09 AM EST reply actions

I have to agree about basketball

It’s hard to take, but the truth is UK has pulled well ahead in the b-ball rivalry, while UNC-Duke are usually very competitive year to year. We’ll start kicking their butts annually in football, but we all know Kentucky is still a b-ball state, just like North Carolina.

by CardsRuleBE on Feb 12, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Whoa, losing doesn't diminish the rivalry. If anything, it intensifies it.

Right

I just meant in the national perception I think UNC-Duke gets more attention because they are usually so evenly matched. I have no doubt the fierceness is no more heated than ours. Can’t be.

this is a weird thing to say

even the biggest self-hating UL fans are not ready to declare the rivalry over because of 3 losses. We won 2 in a row before that. I think its something close to .500 in the modern era. They’ve won a few more, but this isn’t UK-Florida/Tennessee/any other football team in the SEC. Or depaul vs. anyone in the big east basketball.

Have some self-respect!

This is the kind of argument you get into with another UL fan that makes you think, “what the fuck is wrong with UL fans.”

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with UL fans? UK’s had a good 2.5 year run. But, jesus fucking christ. I have no idea what to even say. 2.5 years and we’re ready to declare them big brother.

I say it again, what the fuck is wrong with UL fans? You think UNC fans declare the rivalry over when Duke wins a few in a row? You think the mutants in lexington would declare the rivalry over if UL won 3 straight?

I’m speechless. The more I think about this, the more I’m confused. Maybe Andy G. is right- we do have an inferiority complex.

I’d say jrcard is extremely myopic, but I’m not sure his sentiment is rejected by that much of the fan base. It’s ridiculous.

Let’s all grow a fucking nutsack and quit thinking UK has run away with this one. Its 3 fucking games. we’ve played 100 other games in that span.

by johnnyjoejohnson on Feb 12, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

As I said, I am the biggest Card fan, but with the recruits that UK has proven it will get, we will be the underdog every time we face them.

I’m just being realistic. If CRP proves he can improve recruiting and UK fails in recruiting a year or 2 then we might have a chance. That doesn’t mean we still can’t go to a final four. We just don’t match up well with UK especially with their superior talent. I wouldn’t mind renewing a rivalry with IU. We could keep the football game although UK fans might want to drop it if they get beat several years in a row! I just don’t like giving the UK fans the fodder for humiliating us year after year.

by jrcard on Feb 12, 2012 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

so, telling them its not a rivalry anymore is better?

Dude, you got no clue. Rivalries span decades. Are you over or under 18? Because you can’t have been a sports fan for long to not understand that 3 years is a blink of the eye. even if UK wins 3 more straight, its still a rivalry for chrissakes. The football team lost 4 in a row- very nearly 5.

C’mon man.

by johnnyjoejohnson on Feb 12, 2012 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

That is true. You do have a point.

I just hate playing them year after year knowing we will likely lose. We might as well be doing home and aways with Duke.

by jrcard on Feb 12, 2012 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

actually I'd love to see us do that.

If they'd ever move the UL / UK game to later in the year it would mean a lot more to the national media

Right now, our game quietly takes place early in the season when Louisville is battling injuries and neither team is playing anywhere near their potential. There’s no build up, no conference title at stake, no concern about seeding, etc. Outside this state, the game is essentially meaningless.

UNC/Duke are in the same league which was once thought of as the very best college basketball has to offer (and with poaching Cuse and Pitt from the BE they may be again), and they are usually the top two teams in said league and both meetings take place in February when tournament talk and seeding are in constant rotation. Outside the two fanbases – it’s still a big game, without question. There’s always a lot on the line every time they play.

With our thin-skinned rival’s power over their conference, Louisville and Kentucky will likely never be in the same league. So, moving the game later into the year would help propel it back into the spotlight and re-establish it’s importance. Somewhere during the last 10 games of the season, have the two teams meet in their OOC match when both are at their best and more importantly to us — healthy. Would make for a much better game and the rivalry would get more credibility and coverage, IMO.

Of course, I know this will likely never happen due to several reasons. But, one can fantasize.

UNC-Duke also happens two or three times a year

giving the media more opportunities to hype it. Barring a move to the SEC, our rivalry with UK will never be recognized by the media as the best – but we all know it’s as intense a rivalry as any in the nation.

Jr card why dont you why dont U become a UK fan we dont need fans like you

I was reading the comment on whats the best rivalry and you say we suck and should give up. WTF are you talking bout man go hide under a rock. Grow some balls and get some self respect. Stand tall for your team be proud to be part of one of the best programs in America. If your old enough to remember we beat UK in the final four back in the 80s thats haunted them for years. They have never beat us in a game of that caliber since. That was the begining of the modern rivalry. Hence the original dream game and that game the CARDS won. Until UK beats us in a game that big and with That much at stake its a rivalry cause we own UK and they will never get over us handing them a beat down in the NCAA tournament. UL the winner and UK the loser and they will never forget that niether will I, so there you go JR its a rivalry. And Im proud to be a UL fan

Living in the heart of the Duke-Carolina rivalry I get a chance to see it up close, real close, and I think ours is the best.

Here’s why.
1. The fact they they do play 2-3 time every year makes the impact of a single game somewhat diminished. We only get one shot at UK every year so the importance of winning that game is higher.
2. The fan bases at both Duke and UNC tend to be pretty classy and that keeps the animosity at a more civilized and intelligent level. In our rivalry, there are many more who have those rare qualities of being both arrogant and stupid (can you say Casualgamerreed?). Fans where facts are secondary to perceptions and all unsupportive information is just lies.
3. The base level of hatred between Louisville and Kentucky fans is just deeper than in the Duke – Carolina rivalry. Duke and Carolina people dislike each other, but are civil. For example, you never hear of a fans car being keyed in the parking lot after game or of any physical altercations after a game. Conversely, many UK and UL fans supplant dislike with a genuine hatred that is deep and, in my view unrivaled.
4. Finally both Duke and Carolina are very successful in a number of other areas beyond just basketball. They have other very successful sports teams as well as excellent academic accomplishments. In our rivalry, Louisville also had a large number of other very successful sports programs and a solid academic record. Kentucky, on the other hand, has very little other than their basketball program. Their fans often recount how they live and breathe basketball. It’s because when you are in the hills of eastern Kentucky, you may well have nothing else to base your self esteem on. Kentucky basketball. That’s it. I believe it’s why so many Kentucky fans hold on so vigorously to the “glory” of Kentucky’s basketball dominance. For many, it’s all they’ve got.

This is why there is nothing else like the Louisville – Kentucky rivalry. Nothing.

Go Cards.
