UofL's 3rd Biggest Rival?

There's little debate among Louisville fans that UK is the #1 rival and Cincinnati is #2

There is more debate on who is #3. Even though we've only played once in 7 years, I still think Memphis qualifies. They were arguably our most heated basketball rival in the Metro Conference and C-USA days.

For the Big east era our biggest opponents are generally West Virginia, Marquette, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse (although we own the Orange, 7 wins in a row on the hardwood and 3 on gridiron)

Who in your opinion is the Cards 3rd biggest foe?

West Virginia

No question. Big games in football and basketball. And I dislike their fans almost as much as yUK.

WVU is #3 for football

No question.

But overall, we’ve had a more traditional and continuous rivalry with Marquette and Memphis in basketball.

Interesting question

Are we assuming basketball rivals? If so, I think I would give the nod to Marquette. It’s much more relevant than Memphis, since we’ve played them almost 10x’s more frequently as the Tigers over the last 7 years. From a game standpoint, it has been one of the most phenomenal stretch of games between two programs over ~a decade that you ever ask for…buzzer beaters by Reece Gaines, Francisco Garcia, Jerry Smith, I think some by them, too, (although I try to block those memories out) and the Miracle on Main.

West Virginia is my next choice. The Elite Eight game in 2005 was the most heart-stopping 2 hours of my life (not just my Cardinal fandom), and that has been followed by several other great games. You’ve also got extra hate fuel from the football programs, closer proximity, and a ridiculous home-cooking streak for them in their arena. And we clenched an outright championship of probably the greatest conference in history on their court in 2009

We’ve had our moments with Pitt, too, but not as frequently, and there just seems to be no animosity or even interaction between the two fanbases.

And I don’t even know why you listed Syracuse. We freakin own Syracuse in both sports. Two lay-up wins coming our way since we get them twice. What say we start a ’Cuse Day trend?

Marquette definitely has an argument

Maybe I’m just too reluctant to give up on the Louisville-Memphis rivalry. I just remember how heated the animosity was back when they were memphis state.

I think we can agree that Marquette is the #3 CURRENT rival, while memphis is the #2 historic rival.

(And I’m all for Cuse day…. the Last Game in Freedom Hall was the best sporting event in my life, hands down)

  • Historic #3 rival, not 2

Debate

WVU is #2. Cinci is #3. I would rather stop playing Cinci than WVU is how i decided on that.

I was just about to post to that effect

I think WVU is our #2 rival across the board, and that’s one of the biggest reasons I hope we move to the Big 12.

Didn't we just have a whole tournament about this?

Thought this was decided already? Like down to the 10th biggest rival (may be slight exaggeration).

meh i'd argue that WVU is #1

I don’t get mad when I see UK fans. I wanna run the guy off the road that passes me with one of those WVU stickers on their car.

I don’t have much of it but there’s some respect that I have for the UK fans and what not. But I have no respect for the WVU fan.

Gotta be WVU

Marquette would be next, but WVU gets the nod over MARQ because we win most of the nail biters against Marquette, with WVU is closer to 50/50. Also, we hate WVU in both football and bball, with Marquette we only play bball.

Icing on the cake…WVU stole what should have been UofL’s invite to the B12.
