Wednesday night, we saw history in the making. Not only was this only the 7th "father vs son" coaching matchup in NCAA Basketball, but when the game was coming down to the wire, both coaches, like Superman in a phone booth, ripped off their suits to reveal they were "suited up" for the game. After the father/son coaching duo checked themselves into the game for their respective teams, we caught a glimpse of the passionate rivalry between the two as Rick Pitino's smothering defense caused Richard to alter his shot, inevitably missing what would be a routine layup.
As any great leader, like the kings and generals of historic wars, Rick led the charge against the visiting Panthers and not only out-coached his young protege, and son, but as we see in this snapshot, he also flat-out outplayed his much younger son.
Awaiting a review from the NCAA, the Cardinals may be forced to forfeit this win, as it is apparently against NCAA rules for the coach to actually play in the game. Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, Cardinal fans were delighted to see Coach get out on the floor and practice what he preaches. After the game, Rick told reporters that he "just got caught up in the moment," and if he had it to do all over again, he would "certainly take his son to school every day of the week, and twice on Wednesdays."
