Ok so this is game number two of the five games i said we would have to make some sort of change in order to see a jump start in the offense. While the offense did produce i bit more in the st. johns game mainly due to our ability to get turnovers. This game was very signifcant. Why? simply because this was one of those first round of the ncaa tournament games. We lost again not because of defense not because of the officials, and not 100% because of our players. I'm sure Rick will say at the press conferences that Siva did someting wrong or Kuric or Russ or Swop or Rock, and when asked about the offense He'll go back to the "its fine", "the offense is ok" "the offense coming along once we get healthy" If it hasnt been painly clear the first 16 games of the year it should be clear as of today. "THE OFFENSE IS NOT OK OR COMING ALONG OR MAKING PROGRESS." At this rate princeton could beat us. We dont do well in clean games. we dont do well in half court games. No not all of the games will be like that. But the first and probably second round of the tournament will. Alot of the games in the Big East will be like that. Rick said it his self the Big East is a zone league. The number one team in the country is a zone team.
I'm starting to wonder why the lies. Before every game its like he gives us a disclaimer before the game that we could loose. When i'm sure he knows the world knows the players know we shouldnt loose. Ok toward the begining of the year the offense was screen peyton drive either take the layup or dish to the open guy. weather thats kyle or chris on the wings or a big sliding underneath. So teams keyed on that and said stay home of the wings recover if he gets it to the bigs. But siva and russ have been doing the teams favors by turning the ball over for one. And when they do get in the paint they are simply not tall enough to finish inside. So obvioulsy we the people are upset. Pitino knows he has to try and make a change before getting exposed because we got two big gmes coming up georgetown and uk.
The soulution was to play inside out. In neither game did we do that and in both games we lost. Fast fowarding to st johns. we still didnt get the opportunity to dump it down as much due to st johns turning the ball over and thats Russ's game so he had a feild day. So now we enter into tonights game. The gameplan was obivious and we hadnt seen it used yet obviously. And rick blamed the players saying they didnt get the play in Gorgi in the uk game when asked to do so. So gorgs is the biggest (tallest) player so he had a mismatch. so it was working. They had to double which left the wings open or chane undeneath. But unforunately gorgs picks up fouls so we end up having to play without him. So ultimately we ended up trying to win a game playing the same way were playing from jump.
Lets be real here that doesnt fix the problem but i said we would have to see a change. Rick is trying to change it. problem is that is not the solution. There isnt one team college or pro withing the last 10 years that has won championship where their offense was ran through a post players. And before you say the Mavs lets remember Dirk might be 7'0 ft but he isnt a post player. The reason why teams dont do that is because the bigs are subject to foul and foul out.
You do have to have great post play but you have to have a guy that can create. Wade ad Kobe had Shaq MJ had Rodman and Grant. In college Brewer had Noah and Horford. Kemba had Oriahki. I'm just saying there is a formula and we would be perfect he simply had somone to make the shots that atkins and grant did for notre dame tonight.
I can only hope that Rick knows what he is doing. Swop may not be going hard to the glass like he should. But i promise i'd take that over Rock in the little time he plays thinking that he is a guard. He made some really questionable decisions, and people talk about Russ but honeslty i could do without Rock right now. That might just be me being upset we lost. But he needs to be talked to.
Here's a thought on the future. Some years back billy Donovan had a player by the name of Noah. Some people might know him. He sat him in his first ncaa tournament. He told him he didnt think he was ready for that stage. For the next couple of years he averaged nearly a double double. So hopefully Nunez is using this time on the bench as motivation and doesnt transfer i pray he stays because that kid is talented and is deff the next garcia if not better. Somewhere in the back of my mind i'm thinking that in apr i'm going to be sitting uphere praying that conneticut warms up and there is no snow on the ground. And i'm going to look back on the football and basketball season and post season, and say if only our offense matched our defense we would have won the orange bowl and the ncaa championship. We've already lost in the belk bowl (dont get me wrong i'm happy we saw the post season)
And if were not careful in basketball andif things keep going the way that they are we may not see the post season in basketball
