Team 1 and 1 free throw update

Through last nights game here are the stats:

Team - 27 of 49 - 55%
Dieng - 6 of 12 - 50%
Siva - 7 of 9 - 78%
C Smith - 7 of 9 - 78%
R Smith - 3 of 7 - 43%
Price - 0 of 3 - 0%
Buckles - 0 of 2 - 0%
Chane - 1 of 2 - 50%
Kuric - 2 of 2 - 100%
Justice - 1 of 1 for 100%
SVT - 0 for 1 - 0%
Swop - 0 for 1 - 0%

These figures are actually up a little from prior weeks but still need improvement. Hard to explain why Russ shoots so poorly, but kudos to Siva and Chris Smith for the big improvements. These three guys, plus Dieng have taken 37 of the 49 attempts. And note that on the second free throw these guys are much better:
Dieng - 4 of 6 - 67%
Siva - 6 of 7 - 86%
C Smith - 6 of 7 - 86%
R Smith - 3 of 3 - 100%

In fact, as a team we are 23 of 27 for 85% on the second shot. If only we could shoot those first.

MIssed FTs cost us more than points.

That’s 22 missed front ends plus 4 missed back ends of the 1 and 1, which is 26 times we haven’t been able to set up our press.

With poor field goal shooting not allowing us to set it up, the missed FTs hurt that much more.

I'll go farther

We can’t press after a miss, only after making the (second) one.

Interesting stats

One theory: feedback gained on the first FT attempt leads to improved mechanics/release/leg push/concentration on the second, hence the dramatically improved result on the second attempt. This logic could work both ways in theory, a made first attempt could lead to lazy form on the second. Just adding to the discussion.

What’s remarkable about FTs is that in 50 years, the D-I team average FT% has lingered around 69% without ever breaching 70% (end of year avg). For reference, this season’s avg is currently 68.6%.

Very interesting. Could be confidence too.

After all it’s not a difficult shot and after making one, you must feel like you can do that again.

Less pressure on the second free throw.

As a rule, there’s more riding on the front end, for the very reason we fans worry about the front end percentage.
