DaMarcus Smith at WKU
in case anyone else missed this news too. If he had to go anywhere else in the country, I'm glad it's WKU. Go Toppers!

good fit
WKU’s QB will be a SR this year, he is an agile guy who has to use his feet alot. They do have a guy waiting in the wings. But he is more of a pocket passer. From what i have read Smith is more athletic (and hopefully for WKU’s sake more talented overall). WKU’s coach (Willie Taggart) has done some really impressive things in the 2 short years he has been there, i really do think they will be one of the dominant teams in the SB for years to come (they finished 2nd in the conf this year at 7-1, but didn’t get a bowl bid). Of course if Smith is too athletic and too fast (if there is such a thing) he might make the transition to RB. I think Smith makes more sense as an option QB, that’s what Taggart was when he was QB at WKU, and that was the type of offense WKU had in 2002 when Taggart was OC and the Tops won the I-AA national championship. Whether he ends up at QB or RB i think it is a great pickup for the Tops.
i hope smith isn't too athletic
I’d hate to see WKU ride him like they did Bobby Rainey last year. 369 carries, 1695 carries? That’s some harshness to throw on one person. 40 carries more than the next FBS player, 299 more carries than their number 2 RB. I can’t imagine anyone trying to pull that off 4 years in a row.
workload?
I doubt Smith would get nearly as many carries as Bobby Rainey did. I think Rainey was just given the ball so often because he was far and away the best player on the team. Now that Superman has left, i have to think that WKU will balance their attack (probably still run more than they pass, but more in the 60/40 range). I’m a WKU season ticket holder and have probably seen more games than most over the past 4 years, and without looking at the stats i would assume WKU probably ran about 80% of the time over the past 2 seasons (since Willie Taggart took over).
I hope Smith can fill Rainey’s shoes, but it is 11:30 on Bowling Green and Smith still hasn’t signed yet. I have my fingers crossed. Taggart played freshmen and sophmores about as much as CS last year, so if Smith signs with the Tops, he would more than likely get to play quite a bit (esp. if he plays as a RB).
press release
yeah, in WKU’s press release about the 2012 signing class, it says the signing class does not include Demarcus Smith and Jerrell Moore, but that both have enrolled at WKU for the spring semester. I know Moore will have to sit out this fall, but i assume Smith can play right away.
