"Gorgui didn't play particularly well"?

Anyone else confused by this? I thought he was our MVP tonight, not to say Chane did bad, but Gorgs was better. Think it may be Pitino was doing it boost Behanan’s confidence?

silly you

you probably think things like “points,” “rebounds” and “defense” matter. but when you divide his deflections per minute by his body fat percentage, you can clearly see he played a sub par game.

Clearly, RP saw my post about 'Pitino-speak' and decided to make me look wrong

Show me footage of any other true center this season making a steal outside the arc, followed by a prone positioned pass to fuel a transition score. Gogui was effing awesome.

I think your guess about boosting Behanan is correct, but even so, dissing GD was not necessary to boost CB.

If Pitino truly thinks this, he's an idiot, which we all know he's not. And does anyone think that the best way to motivate an underperformer is to denigrate your best performer?

Put this in the context of your family. For example, would you falsely tear down one child with an excellent report card, in order to motivate an under performing student? This makes no sense to me at all.

And I don’t hate Pitino and think he is a very good coach. But this is just wrong. and writing it off as just “Pitino-speak” does not excuse it.

maybe in some twisted way he was motivating Gorgui

or It could be there was some specific thing he had told Gorgs to work on, and he didn’t do it?

I'll buy this if the emphasis is on the word "twisted".

If someone plays really well…….

a double -double points and rebounds,
5 statistical blocks (but must have altered 20+ shots),
only misses 2 shots from the field (60%),
shoots 83% from the line,
leads both teams with 14 rebounds,
stays out of foul trouble when that has been an issue and point of emphasis by the coaches all year,

………and then may not have done something additionally you asked of him, the statement that he “didn’t play particularly well”, is simply inaccurate – point blank period. And my greatest fear is that it could damage his attitude (like “what do I have to do to please this guy”, or damage the attitude of other players who are not performing near Gorgui’s level).

I realize that we are not in the locker room and don’t get to see the dynamic between Rick and the players, but I can’t help being fearful that this could easily happen. I understand motivation, but I do not understand this.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 30, 2012 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

He clearly expects prodigies from Gorgui.

It upsets me whenever he knocks him, though – even if he does go back and say it’s his fault for playing him too many minutes. But when a kid works as hard as Gorgui clearly does, it’s hard to believe that negativity is a motivator. Gorgui saved that game for us last night. He fought like a tiger to block their shots and pull in rebounds in a last few minutes, and that was the key.

I love Gorgui.

This is why a few weeks ago "I posted Pitino is an idiot but not for why you think"

I have no problem at all with the positive reinforcement of Chane. I am sure it makes great sense but I cannot understand how he can call out Russ for not rebounding in the UK game and continue that kind of pattern now ending up with disparaging remarks about Gorgui.

Yes, he knows the personalities of the players better than us but to quote Seth and Amy “Really? REALLY??” I swear if I was recruiting against CRP I would put together a montage of how good a game various players had followed with Pitino’s contrasting remarks.

by cbcard on Jan 29, 2012 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Easily the most surprising thing he said last night.

I want more of the bad Gorgs then, because he was so much better than his counterpart. And, continues to get better every game. I loved the rebound near the end when you could hear his hands slapping the ball into his grasp; a power grab!

Pitino is such a Rick Tease, always has some indecipherable agenda behind everything he says.

by Unseld2Beard on Jan 29, 2012 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

Perhaps he's coming from the

" I expect him to do this every game and when he doesn’t exceed expectations, he didn’t play well."

How many folks here, after a win, which is what the team is supposed to do, are saying: " The Cards didn’t play well, don’t get all excited, they were supposed to win, Seton Hall missed all there shots, etc…"

How is that different from what CRP is saying?

by ptichenor1 on Jan 29, 2012 11:06 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I posted elsewhere that some of us are always looking to see what we can do better, and therefore focus our comments mostly on areas of improvement.

Unfortunately, that comes off as appearing non appreciative of the positives that occur. That is not an accurate portrayal of our feelings, but I can see where it appears that way. I think many coaches are that way too. Primarily focused on what they need to improve and work on in order to get better – they ALL always talk about constantly getting better. Same type of thing, I think.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 29, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

That's very true

Which is why I think all the Pitino is an idiot talk is extreme. (not intending to single you out) A little understanding is in order.

I really loved the light-heartedness in his demeanor. That’s more of what we saw last year, when the team was having fun and getting along. It’s good for the team morale in my opinion.

Also, I believe a large part of “Pitino Speak” is to get people talking about what he said and deflect any criticism from his players. If he criticizes them first, we all end up defending them. An appropriate thing for a coach to do.

by ptichenor1 on Jan 29, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Why would anyone be criticizing Gorgui?

I can’t for the life of me see why CRP would think he needs to rally the troops around Gorgui after that incredible performance.

by cbcard on Jan 29, 2012 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I am not at all suggesting anyone should be criticizing Gorgui

I was talking in a general sense off what I think CRP does. I just think he says these things to be provocative, sometimes for a purpose, or sometimes not.

Hell, maybe in this case he just forgot to use the sarcasm font when he spoke~

by ptichenor1 on Jan 29, 2012 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

I think Pitino has specific areas of improvements he looks for with each player and that's what he focuses on

I think he wanted to see Chane hustle harder on defense, and he did and it showed. Everyone knows Gorgs is good, hell even the normally shitty announcers know he’s talented. So if RP says he had a bad game it’s probably because he didn’t see improvement in whatever skillset he’s working on. Just my 2 cents

I was once arrested for pissing outside of a strip club (fairly hidden spot. Cop pulled up at the WORST time)

I keep my pants on in public these days. Did you know you can be put on a sex offenders list for pissing in public? Thank God he only wrote me up for public intox and not indecency. Funniest part of the story? Instead of 12 hours in jail, I got 13. Thanks, daylight savings!

What you should have told him is.....

I was taking a leak at Seneca golf course once when the marshall came around the corner and saw me. He said “This is a public golf course. We can’t have that sort of thing going on around here.” I said to him Hey, like my wife says to me “It’s no big thing.”

After he finally stopped laughing he said “Sir, this is a public course. We don’t discriminate on size.” When he drove off in his cart he was laughing so hard he couldn’t stay on the path.

What is the deal with Peyton's shoes?

Chris mentioned the court being slick, and Rick instead of giving reasons for the horrendous final 10 min. he simply said they will get Peyton new shoes. Was that really an issue it seems a bit ridiculous.

by muss02 on Jan 29, 2012 10:08 AM EST reply actions

Or Chuck Taylor Converses

It might have also helped Peyton if Theodore wasn’t using that arm bar against him all the time. One play he bulldozes Peyton to the basket and the announcers comment on how he knocks Dieng out of the play, no call.

by Unseld2Beard on Jan 29, 2012 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

The SH floor is laid over a hockey rink.

Apparently there is some issue with the court being sick. Presumably SH’s players are used to it, though I don’t see how.

by Loouhvul on Jan 29, 2012 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

I read somewhere

that their is an ice rink under the floor for hockey. That always leads to a slick floor. I’m not really worried about the turnovers. That was a combo of basically playing against our own defense full court (willard) and playing on an ice rink.

by PS3theFuture on Jan 29, 2012 10:21 AM EST reply actions

but it doesn't explain so many bad decisions

Unless of course the ice induced cold brain trauma

by cbcard on Jan 29, 2012 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

When pressing us they often had 3 guys pressing our 2 in backcourt

I don’t see why we had so much trouble when we must have had 3 on 2 in the fore court. If we bring a big to the center and they come up to guard him, we have 2 on 1 behind him so there’s no way that one man can cover both sides. Or if they don’t bring someone up to cover the big guy. you just pass it over the double team to him. Doesn’t seem like it should not have been that difficult to deal with.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 29, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

a very good point also, sir.

However I will take the win, put it in my back pocket and try not to explain it!

by PS3theFuture on Jan 29, 2012 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

I'll take a lot more wins and solving this press will get us some.

No doubt but that with the way we performed against this press, we will see it again. Especially in some critical times.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 29, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

yep

I’m psyched that we have a week of practice coming up before our next game. It’s almost like a bye-week in football. Hoping Coach can work some serious magic and install/practice some new stuff between now and Rutgers.

Kind of reminds me

of when U of L used to share Freedom Hall with the Louisville Panthers and in Pitino’s first season when they were playing in the NIT against Temple, they were having some problems with water making its way through and the court being sick. Some dude from Temple even tore what looked like every major ligament in his knee because of it
