Cards Win Third Straight With 60-51 Victory At Seton Hall
Louisville notched its first win in three tries at the Prudential Center since joining the Big East in 2005 with a 60-51 win over Seton Hall Saturday night. The victory was U of L's third straight, and put the Cardinals (17-5, 5-4) above .500 in conference play for the first time this season.
One and-a-half point underdogs? Can't win at Seton Hall?
Gorgui, thoughts?

Gorgui Dieng was the star of stars for the Cardinal on this night, scoring 11 points, grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds and recording five blocks (although I'm pretty sure the official total should have been closer to 20). Russ Smith came off the bench to lead Louisville in scoring with 14 points.
Obviously, we would have liked to have seen the Cards run away with this game after leading by 15 at the break and by double digits for most of the second half, but the fact remains that - according to the computers that, almost across the board, have Seton Hall ranked in the top 20 - this was the most impressive victory of U of L's season.
Again, there are obvious areas where improvement is necessary, but the Cards are back to their winning ways, and if that isn't cause for celebration then I'm not sure what is.

peyton drove me crazy tonight. also hate when kyle doesnt leave his mark on any game.
great win on the road though! Go Cards!
Viva Siva
Kyle got 8 shots tonight (2nd most on the team)
They just didn’t go down. I am impressed that we got a road win (where other and better Louisville teams have failed) with KK having an off night, massive TOs in the 2nd half, and only 12 pts from the field in the 2nd.
Credit the good O in the 1st and the D throughout. Gorgui was the man on D, but he didn’t assert himself on O as much as I’d hoped. (We didn’t get him the ball nearly enough.)
Also, we dominated the boards tonight, especially the defensive glass (save for the one play where ugly bounces and good defense got them 4 OR on one possession.)

I thought this might have been our best defensive effort of the year.
Really closed out well on the wings on 3 point shooters, seemed to switch better, and Gorgui was simply outstanding underneath. Several times they had the numbers on us and we cut off the driver and managed to prevent him passing to anyone open and forced them back into a half court set. One particular time they did this so well I actually jumped up and yelled “Yes”. Very good feeling.

There are things to correct, BUT
Unlike earlier, we’re scraping out wins. Earlier season team couldn’t do that.

Actually the early, early season did several times.
But the early and mid season team didn’t.

They were cut off on the front page on my Mac (in Safari)
but they show up on this page.
Same thing happens with some videos.

OMG INBOUNDS PLAYS!
Sorry needed to get that out….
And press break.
Peyton running really fast is not a press break.
"We are on a collision course with the national championship; the only variable is time"
And always running to the sideline where they could hem him in.
I realize that’s the defensive plan, but if you know they are going to do that, you should be able to handle it better. Especially with the speed and quickness of Peyton and Russ.
Speaking of this, does anyone else think that when pressed, Siva tends to run sideways toward the sideline whike Russ tends to run more past the defender and toward the basket?
by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 29, 2012 11:35 AM EST up reply actions
Exactly.
Passing to the man in the exact spot where they are trying to trap is not a smart move. Neither is running to that spot.

I seriously thought we were gonna blow it at the end
It had that slow, creeping L feel to it. Good to see our guys hang on and come away with a W.

I continue to be baffled by Peyton's poor decision-making
Especially in crucial parts of the game where he should be leading the squad to finish opponents off, much like tonight.
But regardless, he’s continued to show improvement in other areas and appears to finally be healthy.
Really wish we could have finished SH off earlier tonight and gotten our young guys some good conference experience on the road (especially Ware). But enough nitpicking… Nice win, Cards.

Wasn't just him tonight, 23 turnovers for the team.
He had the most, sure, but no one handled the pressure well tonight. Seton Hall played really hard, they needed that win at home and they played like it in the second half

Snoop Says.....
Yea, roll one, smoke one
When you live like this you’re supposed to party
Roll one, smoke one, and we all just having fun
I'd love to know the rationale behind that.

The one sport I made it to semi-professional in I was able to partake and still make great plays
but also some boneheaded plays.
One key stat
and that’s 23 — count ’em, twenty-friggin-three — turnovers.
If we only had half as many, we win going away.
Fix that, add a little more offense, keep the defense and the rebounding and the play in the paint — and I’ll put this team up against just about anybody.

The 23 turnover mark is an outlier. No need to worry about it. If anyone knows how to turn us over, it's Kevin Willard. Their press was good, but we made it look great with atrocious decision making for a long stretch.
Take away that fact that their coach spent a decade learning Rick’s system, and that we had a boneheaded stretch of decisions in the press and all is well.

I hope so
(Shoot — I had a really nice post ready with Assist-to-Turnover numbers for all our Big East games to date — but I can’t put in a table, and the editor ignores tab characters, and so bleah.)
To this point, our Ast-to-TO ratio in Big East play is dead even — 140 assists, 140 turnovers.
And you’re right, 24 is an outlier; we usually only do 17 turnovers or so. :-)
Hope you’re right, though, and the sloppiness is not coming back — or at least not to the tune of that many times.

How about more TOs in the second half than shot attempts?
I mean how weird is that?
Very bad night for turnovers
and only one came from Kevin Ware!

In reality Peyton had eight and Gorgui three
On of Gorgui’s was when Peyton hit him with a slant pass as Gorgui was running full speed down the court and the ball got to him one step before Pope was planted in his path. Statistically that is charged to Gorgui but he didn’t have a chance in hell of handling that pass. It really was on Peyton.
And by the way ...
I know we don’t follow the women as closely on here as we do the men — but, it’s worth noting that BOTH teams won today:

Two Cards wins in one day makes it a double-good day.

The turnovers definitely suck
But we manhandled them on the boards and held them to 27% shooting. Also we didn’t get hosed by the refs like West Virginia did. Seriously, when is someone going to address the consistently horrible officiating in the Big East?

You certainly could put together a video montage that would be terribly embarrassing to the league.

Maybe Crum’s Revenge would do it.

How about Jim Burr
He did our game which ended past 10 PM in Newark and then did the UConn-ND game today at UConn which started at noon. How fresh could he be?
Do we need Borat to do a “Not!” joke?
The officials were wrong to not call the goaltend, but if it's gonna happen, it's funny that it happens against WV.
Now they know how we feel when we play in Morgantown.
So confused...
Rick??? Agree that Chane had a great game but to say TWICE Gorgui didn’t play well? 11 pts, 14 reb… yeah that sucks. SMH lol And new shoes for PeyPey. All’s well.
