Greg Schiano headed to NFL a week before signing day
It's not official yet, but ESPN is reporting that Rutgers HC Greg Schiano is going to be hired as the next HC of the Tampa Bay Bucccaneers. The Bucs were recently jilted by Oregon HC Chip Kelly so don't start celebrating yet. But with Schiano gone (a week before signing day), i have to assume the Rutgers football program will undergo an implosion over the next few years.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are near an agreement to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano as their new head coach, according to league sources.
The two sides are busy putting the finishing touches on an agreement that would give Tampa Bay a new direction and Schiano, 45, his first NFL head coaching job, according to sources.

The two sides met Wednesday for the second time and then spent some of the night into the morning trying to work out a contract that is expected to be finalized, according to a source.
Mike Sherman, the other candidate to get a second interview with the Bucs, is in Miami this morning visiting with the Dolphins about their offensive coordinator job, according to a source.
Schiano is an under-the-radar coach, but Tampa Bay has been eyeing him throughout this process. Buccaneers college scout Bill Rees made contact with Schiano at the outset of Tampa Bay's coaching search, and the two men stayed in contact.
The Glazer family also conducted a massive amount of research, reaching out to various NFL people. One of the people they called was Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who spoke highly of Schiano.

NFC South blog
ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas writes about all things NFC South in his division blog.
Tampa did talk with Oregon head coach Chip Kelly before those talks collapsed early Monday.
This is not the first time Tampa Bay didn't land its first choice. In 1996, after the Buccaneers fired Sam Wyche, they tried to hire Bill Parcells and Steve Spurrier before hiring Tony Dungy.
In 2002, after firing Dungy, they tried to hire Bill Parcells and Steve Mariucci before trading for Jon Gruden.
Now, after talking with Kelly, they have honed in on Schiano, who has a 49-28 record at Rutgers since 2006. Schiano is said to have impressed the Bucs in the two interviews he had -- one in Dallas a couple of weeks ago, another as recently as Wednesday morning.

recruits
Not sure what type of recruits they had coming in next year but hopefully Strong and staff can swoop in on them. Tell them they have to board the train or get ran over.
So what you're tellin me is
we’re stealing they’re top recruits.

Rutgers Recruits
Most of Rutgers guys were from the NJ/PA area, an area Strong hasn’t recruited very much. I think it is doubtful Strong would have a legitimate shot at very many, if any of Rutgers recruits.
But, the list of recruits that Rutgers has amassed is very top heavy ESPN rates the 18 commits as 5 4* and 12 3*, with 7 spots still open. That could have been a monster class. Now with signing day approaching, it is very unlikely Rutgers gets any big commits between now and Wednesday, and there is a good chance some of the verbal commits they already have will start to have second thoughts and the impressive recruiting class that Schiano built up will (hopefully) fall apart. I’m going to be peeking at Rutgers message boards all afternoon and watch them go into meltdown mode.
This kind of sucks. The BE needs strong programs and coaches. This coaching talent gutting is what has hampered our league.

Out of all the recruits that Rutgers had, there was 1 that was recruited by Charlie Strong and Co...
(OT) J.J. Denman – 6’6", 310 lb 4* recruit from PA
He committed to the Rutggers program on 1/23/12 which means he’s probably pretty pissed that 3 days later Schiano left. Let’s hope we can pick this guy up…
Pretty telling stat here about the BE coaching landscape
Assuming Schiano does indeed leave, Doug Marrone, now about to enter his fourth season as the Syracuse coach, will be the conference’s longest-tenured coach

Penn State
This is their area, and with the recent passing of Joe Pa, i would imagine some of those Kids would likely end up playing at State College
All you just proved is that he was a winner.
(most of the time…technically.)

We gotta get off this sinking ship.
Don’t mean to be negative, but damn.

I posted this in the wrong thread.
The sinking ship is the big east when the longest tenured head coach has been there for 2 seasons.

I think we are headed to the B12. The insiders know (i.e. Schiano) and they are getting out of town.

Is Schiano a Louisville insider
or a Big 12 insider?

He's an NFL insider, but probably soon to be an NFL outsider.

Could they be cousins?
Is Schiano related to Coach Bobby Pinocchio? One splits a week before signing day and the other split a week (actually less I think) after signing a new contract. It’s got to be in the genes.
It's America. And after making Rutgers respectable again after his 10 years of hard work, I think he's entitled to accept a promotion.

Yes but the timing is unbelievable
Talk about screwing both Rutgers and the recruits simultaneously. It’s like an orgy in a porno.
Is he supposed to wait until after signing day and completely screw over the recruits?
The Big East could be doomed w/r/t the BCS in 2 years. He’s done all he can at Rutgers. I’d make that move if I were him, too.
If he’d just signed a new contract, that sounds like coincidence seeing as how the Bucs were targeting Chip Kelly, not Schiano, just a couple days ago.

I'm sick of contracts not being contracts
Sure a guy has to look out for himself but consider this. If a coach wants to opt out of a contract he can with virtually no consequences. But if the school wants to fire him he will hold the school to the letter of the contract and usually collect several years salary. Doesn’t that sound one sided to you?
Far from an expert on this, but that sounds like every coaching contract in sports
I’d blame the schools and entities that created and put up with this system, not guys like Schiano. Ultimately, going from Rutgers to the NFL is a pretty big promotion and he more than did his fair share for that program. Folks were joking on Twitter how the RU varsity team lost to the alumni team in preseason scrimmages prior to Schiano’s arrival. IMO, this isn’t even close to a situation that should be made an example of “what’s wrong with college football.”

I know that.
It’s just that I can’t stand the hypocrisy. They always preach one thing to the recruit and the parents and then do exactly the other. How about when Sabin denied any contact whatsoever and then jumped ship two days later.
I realize the practicality of what they do but it’s like the Chinese water torture. Drip, drip, drip until I explode.
oops on spelling
Sabin = vaccine
Saban = Alabama coach who needs a truth vaccine
Maybe Freud typed my previous post for me.
