Louisville 84, Villanova 74: Some Items On The Morning After

A couple of quick items from last night to start your Thursday.

First, it sounds like newfound team camaraderie was the main theme in the locker room following the victory.

Screen_shot_2012-01-26_at_8

Here's Russ Smith talking about the win and the team coming together:

And the real star of that video:

Screen_shot_2012-01-25_at_11

Russ on Swop:

"I'm really happy for Swop - words can't describe how happy I am for him," Russ Smith said. "I couldn't breathe I was so happy for him.

And lastly, perhaps the most unified and successful "you suck" chant I've ever heard at a sporting event.

He really did.

The chant was started by a student with a nasty mustache and goes as follows:
Mustache: “hey ref”
Everyone else: “YOU SUCK”
Repeat.

My mother was even at the game. She told me she joined in the chant. I’m a proud son.

Love this Russ quote from C.L. Brown

Lighten up Francis

or Peter Dinkage is never going to come back to another game.

I sit in 102 Row CC

and always feeel like the people around me think i’m a jerk for clapping constantly and howling during free throws but then I remember, FUCK IT, we’re at a basketball game. Also, I sit on the aisle so I have to constantly stand up so the old fogeys don’t spill my beers when they get up to go to the bathroom 10 times a game.

If the old fucks want to sit down the whole game they need to spend the extra $1500 per seat and sit in the sideline sections, because we all know they never stand up over there.

Bullshit

I resemble that remark!!!!!! My wife and I are in 103 and stood the last six minutes. Don’t paint all of us old farts with the same brush!

That was me last night

I get to go to about 4 games a year. My girlfriend took me for my birthday last night, I enjoyed every minute of it. Sorry that old guy couldn’t get a good view…. no wait I’m not.

This has been an onging battle since Freedom Hall.

I remember the Pitt game when they came in ranked real high. I had front row seats on a sideline and basically stood the whole game. I had so many people yelling at me. One guy even proceeded to throw shit at me. When the game was over and I walked by the guy that threw shit I was ready to start throwing blows but he didn’t say a thing when I walked by.

by tnowka on Jan 26, 2012 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

yea me n my wife went to the CofC game last december

My whole problem with some of our fans is they give you this look when you stand up and cheer like a hey you are in my way! My response is paid 300 buckeroos to sit a row from the court and I wanted to enjoy every Damn second of it . Especially since I live in. Pittsburgh and don’t get to see very many bball games….we seriously need to police people like this ourselves as a fan base and tell them to get the fuck out or get on board. To harsh? I don’t think so ..these kids feed off us as a fan base and being at home should always be advantage LOUISVILLE!
Another thing that really grinds my gears is UK FANS going to our home games and sporting their colors
How would they treat us if we went to their games just for the hell of it wearing our red colors ? Not to good I presume which I think is fair ….watching the game last night I kept seeing this kid sitting right behind the villinova bench waiving a big ass UK flag ! Even though he was just a kid I still would have snatched that Shit from him and threw it right in the garbage

by Cards fan in the burgh' on Jan 26, 2012 2:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That was definitely a Villanova flag. They are the wildcats too you know. But yea, I still wanted to throw it in the garbage.

Rofl

Mass exodus from my section at the 4 minute mark last night, when the game was still in doubt.

by CardinalDude on Jan 26, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

Not a good game for John Cahill

I understand that its hard to be a ref and make split second calls on plays happening that fast, but he was completely ignoring blatant fouls right in front of his eyes, and then blowing the whistle on something when there were 4 other players between him and what was happening.

The two fouls on Dieng and Behanan where the guys tripped over their outstretched, planted feet were ridiculous.

Fortunately Louisville was able to persevere and win the game in the end.

by regis villebin on Jan 26, 2012 9:19 AM EST reply actions

don't know which ref(s) was/were the problem

but def thought, on both ends, that was one of the worst called games in terms of missed fouls and imaginary fouls that I’ve ever seen.

by Leeroy Jenkins on Jan 26, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

The past few seasons in the Big East have had some massive fuck ups from refs.

But so far this season appears to be the worst in terms of overall performance. They are so inconsistent. Like I said early this season, I believe it affects out the teams play. I feel like Nova wasn’t called for a lot of reach in and slaps that we were called for. Also seemed like Nova got some generous “in the act of shooting” calls too.

(Un)Fortunately we won this game, so some of the ire directed at the refs gets lost.

by CardinalDude on Jan 26, 2012 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, don't even get me started

on the “act of shooting calls”. They had at least 4 or 5 that in no possible way whatsoever could have been considered shooting fouls. When you’re dribbling around the perimeter, with you back to the basket, and someone reaches in on you, that is not a shooting foul.

When you drive to the basket, get hacked, take 3 or 4 steps without dribbling, then toss the ball in the air in the general direction of the basket, it is NOT a shooting foul!

by regis villebin on Jan 26, 2012 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Was bad for sure. There was a 3 minute sequence where Gorgui got smacked on an offensive put back, Kyle got hammered going to the rim, and both were no calls

Then on the alternating possession, Nova got to the line twice on tick-tack reach in BS.

It was almost like they were trying to keep the fouls/ free throws even, and that made their actual calls even more inconsistent.

Nothing makes me more furious at an official than when they make a call from mid court, where they can’t even see the ball through all the players in front of them, about something that happened under the basket.

That old fart did that at least 3 times last night.

Fool's names are like their faces, often seen in public places.

by Chick-Stratino'sUrDaddy on Jan 26, 2012 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

I had the same thought about trying to keep it even

I was annoyed by the ESPN announcer too. He kept pointing out how the number of fouls were even, as though the ends justified the means.
The officials need to call the game as they see it, and shouldn’t be paying any attention to how many fouls each team has.

by JohnTongEchoesinmyhead on Jan 26, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

This.

What makes people assume both teams have to foul the same number of times in a game?

This game reminded me of the UK game, lots of fouls on us early in both halves, followed by what seemed to be make up calls to get # of fouls even.

by CardinalDude on Jan 26, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

What I don't understand

is how they miss the major collisions that are obviously a foul one way or the other,

but then call the ticky tack I slapped you on the wrist foul.

by regis villebin on Jan 26, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Very true

These guys are all getting older, and they’re being forced to ref way too many games a week. Plus they’re trying to see what happens in a split second among players moving lightning quick.

They need to get some new, younger blood into the referee spots so that they can keep up with these athletes and make more accurate calls, rather than anticipating fouls and calling what they think probably happened.

by regis villebin on Jan 26, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

They are not forced to work that many games.

They are more or less independent contractors. They works as many games as they want, all on them. I think the NCAA should limit the # of games you can ref in a week.

by CardinalDude on Jan 26, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

Well, right now, because of what they pay them...

if they cut the number of games in a week they can do, it no longer becomes viable for it to be their only job. Since this job occupies August – April, it doesn’t leave much time for another full time job.

by Remote Cardinal on Jan 26, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

The top ones make around $1k a game.

This is a couple of years old, but 80-90 games equals $80-90k a year, for around 4 months of work. I think they could live off 50-60 games a season.

by CardinalDude on Jan 26, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

My thing is this

These refs make calls they think they see and are way out of position to even see it. Most if not all the time their vision is blocked and the other ref that’s closer to the play didn’t see anything warrantying a foul being called.

Last night was priceless. I don’t know what I was more annoyed at. The phantom fouls and no-calls or the John Cahill-Michael Stephens “see who’s balls are bigger by calling the most out of position fouls in the others area of the court” contest.

Russ-Swop

Love the quote from Russ about his reaction following Swop’s 3. Watch the replay of the shot, and just watch how Russ reacts from the bench.

by PhilRich on Jan 26, 2012 9:37 AM EST reply actions

The problem with our team and Refs

is that we are a smallish team, and generally Refs give the call tothe bigger player. It seems like Rus never gets a foul call when he drives against a big man but he does get fouls called against guards.

Refs just ignore the body contact by bigger players on smaller ones because they assume that the smaller player initiates the contact.

As we all know ,Assuming just makes ans ASS out of U and ME

Favorite quote from Eric Crawford's piece this morning:
"We talk a lot of trash in scrimmages," [Siva] said. "I tell Kyle his shot’s broken. Now that I’m hitting mid-rangers I can do that. It’s just more fun."

by CardinalFanaticus on Jan 26, 2012 10:14 AM EST reply actions

Thought the same thing last night - some really nice ball movement sequences

Remember a couple of weeks ago when we were lamenting that this team didn’t pass like last year’s team? Well, maybe the team meeting had something to do with that too.

I loved during the last 3 minutes

How Russ was on his feet on the bench telling the crowd to get loud.

by mkyCARD on Jan 26, 2012 10:37 AM EST via mobile reply actions

edgar

would pump up the crowd from the bench provided he wasn’t sulking, which was pretty rare. his pumping up the crowd came more on the court after big plays and standing on the bench screaming “this is our house” after hitting the UK shot.

I don’t recall russ pumping up the crowd until this game. it seemed like the entire bench was jacked for this game. a good sign.

I hope this team can reach their potential now.

Don’t know what the hell was up with them, don’t really care, as long as they’re back.

by Jason G on Jan 26, 2012 10:52 AM EST reply actions

Well let's not get ahead of ourselves. Things are looking up but I don't think

we’ve quite turned the corner yet. Pitt and Nova aren’t that good this year. When we beat a good team I will start thinking potential is being reached because the potential of this team was suppose to be final four.

by tnowka on Jan 26, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately, injuries have taken our ceiling down a couple of notches

I just don’t think we’ve got enough healthy pieces left to be a serious FF contender. I would love to be wrong, but I think I’m being realistic. We still have a long way to go to ensure that we make the tournament. I hope that we get in with a decent seed and win a couple of games, but we can’t expect much more when half our roster (including key rotation guys like Marra, WB, and SVT) have been cut down by injuries.

by cardsinindy2010 on Jan 26, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, you gotta adjust your expectations if you want to enjoy watching this team

The Final Four team we predicted included Wayne scoring 15+ a night (at least the one in my head did). Marra and Rak going down hurt. SVT- people who understand basketball better than me say he would have contributed. But, I could never deal with his lack of offensive contribution anyway.

I was very annoyed by the ESPN people ay half time.

When the crowd was booing while the teams were walking to the tunnels they were saying things like, “The crowd here at the Yum Center are getting restless because of their team’s effort” and blah blah blah. I was yelling at the tv “they’re booing the effing refs, you morons!”

I bleed red and black. I poop blue.

by CardsFan7 on Jan 26, 2012 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

That and Glockner tweeting about how we shouldn't be excited to beat a mediocre NIT team...

I mean, really? You think UK fans weren’t really happy to beat a mediocre NIT Tennessee team recently? If that game took place in Rupp, you think their fans wouldn’t have been going nuts at the end of the game?

Some of these guys just kill me. And while Nova has played their way to being a likely NIT team, it’s not like they aren’t a talented team. There is plenty of talent on that roster, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them beat a highly ranked BE team before the year is out.

Chick, wscii, and I were all over him.

A guy who was 1 for 10 for threes on the season and coming back from missing an entire season…and one of the nicest guys you’ll meet…knocks down the dagger three in a ref-plagued game?

Yeah…cheering and going nuts is stupid. Shame on us.
