Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

wayne playing?

So i know that he was suppose to see his first game action tonight and then of course there was a set back with the shoulder. Has anything been said yet about when we expect to see him get some actual live minutes? Or how he has been doing with losing the weight that Pitino wanted him to lose? Sorry if anything was posted on these questions over the weekend. I was in Las Vegas and wasnt able to stay up to date.

On Courtside this weekend

Wayne was on Court Side with Rick Pitino over the weekend, and they addressed this topic. They said that he should start full practice in early Feb. and be ready to play the middle or end of the month. Pitino said that if he doesn’t think he will make an impact on the team winning, then they will redshirt him.

redshirting him seems like a waste

He isn’t expected to stay for four years anyway. It seems even lass likely that he’d stay for a fifth year. But if assimilating him puts a strain on the team’s rhythm or chemistry, then I agree he should redshirt.

Thanks

for helping me out here. At this point I think they would almost be better to just red shirt him to make sure he is completely healthy. Shoulder injuries are very suspectable to reinjury.

No real reason for a redshirt

Like rickmbari said, he likely wouldn’t stay and play 4 years anyways. Depending on how quick he comes back and gets back into the ‘groove’ he’s a 2 year or 3 year, tops, player.

We haven't even seen him on the court yet

Sure would hate to lose a year if he turns out to be solid but not spectacular. How many guys have we seen over the years that we thought had the talent to go to the next level but never did?

Very true

From what I recall he made a total of two shot attempts (during one of the exhibition games) – both air balls.

No downside to redshirting him though

He takes up a scholarship either way, just leaves our options open.

I'm with redshirting him

Especially when considering the injuries. I’ve had the feeling he’ll be an up and down player. No reason to waste an entire year of eligibility on an assumption he’ll be leaving in a year or two. We don’t know that. If he gets healthy, somehow stays healthy, and is the star player we’ve heard about, we might see him opt out early. But, if the last couple years are any indication on the type of bad luck he has with injuries, I don’t see him playing at a high level consistently enough to turn recruiters’ heads.

I'm on the fence. But, if he can get a few regular season games and some tourney games under his belt, play him.

I think that experience would be beneficial for next season. You know our last few games and tourney games are going to be pressure situations unlike our early-season schedule next year.

Exactly. And if the kid is as good as they say he is...

He will not be staying for 5 years anyway. No harm in burning his redshirt.

it's possible a redshirt is as much about eliminating distractions as it is about an extra year

If Pitino declares him unable to contribute, then redshirting him would mean no more questions about when/if Wayne will play. I’m not only referring to the questions from the outside, but among the players as well. Clarity about roles goes a long way towards the cohesiveness of a team. Clearing up what role Wayne will play this year can help.

That's the "but" from my earlier comment

only you said it better.
