DeJuan Wheat, Lancaster Gordon To Have Jerseys Honored

I believe many of you have been calling for this (the honoring of Wheat's jersey) for quite some time.

Here's the release:

Several special events are on tap at the final four home University of Louisville men's basketball games during the month of February.

Two former UofL All-Americans will have their names added to the list of honored jersey names displayed in the KFC Yum! Center: Lancaster Gordon and DeJuan Wheat.

Gordon (1980-84) will be honored at halftime of the Feb. 6 game against Connecticut. He is among the top U of L career scorers (1,614, 14th at U of L) and his 192 career steals rank seventh all-time. A native of Jackson, Miss, the 6-3 guard helped U of L to a combined 102-34 record and two NCAA Final Four appearances. He was selected as the 1983 NCAA Mideast Region Most Outstanding Player, scoring 24 points in the regional championship game against Kentucky.

Wheat (1993-97) will be honored at halftime of the Feb. 26 game against Pittsburgh. Wheat was the first player in NCAA Division I history with career totals of at least 2,000 points, 450 assists, 300 three-point goals and 200 steals. The Louisville native completed his career with 2,183 points (second all-time at U of L), 498 assists (4th), 323 three pointers (2nd) and 204 steals (6th). One of 12 finalists for the 1997 Naismith Player of the Year Award, he helped the Cardinals post a combined 95-41 record, four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 and Elite Eight in his last two years.

There will be two "color" events in February, with a "White Out" scheduled for the Feb. 13 game against Syracuse and the annual "Wear Red for the Seniors" game set for Feb. 29 when the Cardinals face USF in the final home game of the season. Cardinal fans are encouraged to wear white and red on those respective days.

DeJuan was my first basketball love

And he was ten kinds of ugly, so you know he could ball.

I really laughed out loud on this. I guess he wasn't THAT cute.

I was in 3rd grade and all I remember is him doing reverse through the leg dribbles and shooting 3s in grills.

I mimicked that move until I realized it looks kind of goofy with a girl doing it. He is the reason I am a Louisville Cardinal. I loved this dude.

Disagree to the 10th Degree!

1st of all: beauty is in the eye of the beholder & 2nd: I would have to disagree with you.
I think DeJuan is tall, dark & HANDSOME & for the record my vision is 20/20, so I am not Blind for anyone who has a ridiculous comeback to that. It’s rather simple & childish to post something negative and furthermore insulting to a Blog about someone being HONORED for ACCOMPLISHMENTS and TALENT. Naturally, you’re entitled to your opinion, but it’s still inappropriate, unnecessary & out-of-order given the context.
Not to mention, DeJuan is one of the most kind-hearted, genuine, down-to-earth and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and if you want confirmation on that, Just Ask Somebody, Anybody (from Denny Crum to fellow teammates to some of the kids he hosted for FREE this summer at his basketball camp)). Perhaps, you Don’t know him, so you see him only for his exterior, smh. That’s too bad……
He’s not big on reading blogs, but I don’t think his mother, teenage daughter, or anyone other family member would be amused, nor was I.
All I can say for you, Mr.—(I’m sure) or Mrs. TalkinMULE is at least if you know how to pick an appropriate username! Since you post AS(S)inine comments…. but you were right about one thing, He could (and still can) ball…. Which is probably why his jersey is being honored (That’s what the article was about, right?)

Good day :)

'Caster

A friend of mine was sitting in the behind the UK basket end zone during the Dream Game. After UK scored again he heard Lancaster say as he inbounded the ball to Milt “I ain’t taking no more of this shit.” Lancaster stole the ball the next two times UK had the ball and the comeback was on. Guy was a warrior.

Will always have a fondness for DeJuan Wheat

He was my counselor at Ballard Basketball Camp in middle school.

Not to mention how he almost single handedly brought the team back against UNC in that Elite Eight game.

I have had the pleasure/honor of having several long conversation with Lancaster over the past several years. One of the most peronable former players I have ever met. He said his career at UL was like inside bookends. He came right after we won in 80, and left in 85 and we won it again in 86.
He told a story about Crum that was interesting. Said Coach would change things up just so people couldn’t have exceptionally high scoring games. There was a game and he had 17 at the half. Crum said ok, we’re going to change the offense the 2nd half and go inside. Caster ended up with 22 points and had 6 assists in the 2nd half.
Personable but also very humble. I believe he will be taken back by being honored like this.

FINALLY!

IMO the best player to put in a CARD uniofrm in the last 20 yrs(besides Garcia & Twill). You could always count on Wheat to deliver. My favorite player to ever play for the Ville. Its a damn shame it took them 15 yrs to honor him for what he accomplished here. Now the YUM center rafters will be complete. Congratulations Wheat!!! Still the smoothest and sweetest jumper I’ve ever seen!

lancaster was a beast and wheat well....

lancaster and the ’83 team was my favorite team. should have won it that year. one thing about wheat that people forget. he played against the best guards that year and shut them DOWN. the young man could play some defense. they really need to retire his number.
