Slumpbustin' Cards Defeat Pitt, Restore Faith In Humanity

Kuric hit a bunch of 3s, 2010-2011 Peyton Siva showed up for 12 solid minutes out of freaking no where. Chane and Gorgui made short shots and made them look easy. Fun times were had by all. We're not "back" by any stretch of the imagination. But you have to feel good not only for the fans but for the team. They deserve a feel-good victory like this.

Enjoy the weirdness. Enjoy your Sunday. Nova's got next.

58-59 season

We openned with 13 (give or take) wins. Fred Sawyer, a 6’ 11" forward on O and center on D, refused to change his socks until the team lost. These weren’t game socks. They were practice and game socks. Several players wanted their lockers moved away from Fred’s.

I saw him once driving. Damned if he didn’t look funny in a VW Beetle.

Wore my Louisville 3/4 sleeve

Baseball shirt. Previous game day attire included orange bowl t-shirt, of which had been 12-0 until the Marquette game. Looks like baseball shirt is gonna start a new streak…I hope.

Yep,... tonight was big. Like I said,.. they didn't just win, they took control and refused to let them back in.

Felt good but they’ve gotta build on that by beating Nova, Rutgers, and maybe Seton Hall heading into the home game with UConn. They do that and people will come back from the ledge.

by UL is my hot hot sex on Jan 22, 2012 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not a "naysayer" bro, but this was a "must win" game for a reason.

Their backs are against the wall right now,… and to their credit they played like that against maybe the only team in the BE who needed a win more than we did.

Big ups to them and the staff for that, but if they don’t come back and do the same thing in 3 of the next 4 they’re still gonna be in trouble.

They looked good tonight, and even if this is the group we’re gonna have to get it done with for the rest of the year,… I think they can shock a lot of people as long as they stay healthy and continue to improve.

The important thing is to keep moving forward and getting better, build on tonight and not go backwards.

Funny thing...

Our basketball coach has a decade long record of underacheiving and making endless excuses and its not ok for me to beat the drum that we deserve better. But when the football team was in the tank EVERYBODY was on Kragthorpes case…including me.

How many of you forget how I was defending BOTH OCs during football season. These guys had a bunch of babies for an OL and were in only their second season of trying to rebuild a football program that had hit rock bottom.

Don’t give me shit just because I want to give my opinion on RP. Many of his minions will be on here during football season complaining about the offensive play calling and saying we need a new OC. Watch and see. All this stuff is as easy to predict as a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western. Doesn’t matter if it has happened yet, you know what’s comming (if you are awake).

RP plays this bunch like a $3 fiddle.

I’ll shut up when I don’t hear this same crowd of “positive” CARD fans calling for the OCs head every time a run play does not work.

Deal?

I hate it when there are things that are deserving of criticism and people get all bent out of shape because others point it out.

You wanna come and say CRP is a immoral, no talent, over the hill, donkey lover when we lose,… fine.

But if we win and people are feeling good about it, well,… you’re just being a giant floppy penis if you’re only hear to criticize people for “taking the crumbs.”

Not cool IMO, but hey… do what you do man.

Hopefully this is the start of a MAJOR reawakening for him.

I did notice on that drive to the bucket late that he seemed to be quicker that he has been. For the last month or more, when he drove the lane he literally ran into 2 men standing there. On the drive last night he got there before anyone could defend. Seems like that used to happen a lot. Hope we see more of that for sure.

Yes

3 assists and no turnovers. He didn’t get credited with a steal, but I swear he at least got involved with one lose ball. It didn’t seem like Pitt was scoring much while he played either— would love to see the +- stats of his playing time.

by REALISTICCARDSFAN on Jan 22, 2012 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

He had two deflections

Justice never gives you a “Wow!!!” moment but he also never gives you a “WTF?” either. He is solid and doesn’t make many mistakes. I honestly believe he should get 5-10 minutes every game. Peyton could use some blow time because 36 or more minutes (assuming no foul trouble) for a point guard, especially if the other team presses, is equivilent to 45 minutes for for a 2 or 3 and almost 50 for a 4 or 5.

by cbcard on Jan 22, 2012 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

That was the most organized we have looked all year.

We are improving, Pitino has to be happy with most of what they did last night. I like that we are isolating Chane and letting him take his man. I do not like the PG at the top of the key going sideways, but I know there is a reason why he starts there and that the D is forcing him away from the hoop; it still looks like wasted effort now though.

We just beat a team with loads of talent, at their place, and looked like the better team doing it.

by Unseld2Beard on Jan 22, 2012 8:14 AM EST reply actions

I like that too, but have you noticed............

that when either Chane or Gorgui starts that backing in move, and everyone knows they are probably going to shoot, that we often do not send anyone to the boards, especially the back side for the long rebound. As well as we played last night, Pitt did get 50% more offensive rebounds than we did. Been that way all year. We rarely gets as many offensive boards as our opponent. Wish we would fix that.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 22, 2012 8:36 AM EST up reply actions

That's the trade off of iso isn't it.

We need to hit the boards, (you are right and I sound like CRP in my head when I write that), but if they go after them too soon they allow their defender to sag and clog the space and if they get down there too late the Ribee is already claimed. So, it is a fine line to walk.

Or. at least that is how I see it, imagine it is working.

I still like seeing us taking to them near the hoop. Maybe we will find a way to get RB position too, one can only hope. As, one can only hope that we put a crimp on the number of O RiBees we allow them too. The gap in percentage can close from both directions.

by Unseld2Beard on Jan 22, 2012 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

Not to disagree in general, but

Pitt got 50% more offensive rebounds because they missed 52% more shots. As a percentage, we got ever so slightly MORE offensive rebounds than they did.

by rickmbari on Jan 22, 2012 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

Uunderstand. And they also took 59 shots to our 47 so they had more opportunities there too.

But we have not done well lately on the offensive glass. From the Ky game on we have been out rebounded on the offensive glass 75-105. In those 7 games, we were outrebounded offensively in 6 of them and by a significant margin in 5 of those 6. And I don’t have to remind you that we had lost 4 of those 6 games before last night. Just saying that so often giving up that offensive rebound often also leads to an easy put back and sometimes that reactive foul to boot.

Again, I was very pleased with the teams effort and performance last night. Just saying that if we did a better job on the offensive glass, it would really help us going forward.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 22, 2012 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Other things that would help us going forward:
  • Committing fewer turnovers
  • Forcing more turnovers
  • Hitting a higher field goal percentage
  • Hitting a higher 3-point FG percentage
  • Holding our opponents to a lower shooting percentage
  • Shooting more free throws

Basically, improving on any stat, all else being equal, would be helpful. I just don’t see offensive rebounding as something to single out after a game where we did a better job of it than our opponents did.

Also, rebounding is a zero-sum game. Offensive rebounding cannot be more important than defensive rebounding because every defensive rebound for one team is an offensive rebound denied to the other team.

"I am willing to donate to the charity that is working on the prevention of whatever the hell Dick Vitale has." - noobmaster

by rickmbari on Jan 22, 2012 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

but we didn't do a better job on the offensive glass (8 vs 12)

and we haven’t done a better job in the last 7 games (75 vs 105).

Further, a defensive rebound gives you the possession 90 feet from the basket. An offensive rebound usually gives you the ball inside 5 feet which I would ague gives you a much better opportunity to score. So, in this regard I think it’s reasonable to deduce that an offensive rebound often results in a higher percentage of made baskets than a defensive rebound.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 22, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think this game was a good one to make a case from, either way

Not saying it’s not a problem going forward, but Gorgui especially did a nice job on the offensive glass in the first half, and then we shot 70+% in the second half, so there weren’t really very many offensive opportunities for us to grab. O-rebounding rate is a valid statistic to use in this case, IMO, given the percentage we shot.

by bartenpa on Jan 22, 2012 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

Lets try this again

8 offensive rebounds out of 21 possible is a better job than 12 rebounds out of 32 possible. By your way of thinking, we could have gotten every offensive rebound possible and still done a worse job of offensive rebounding than they did.

And a defensive rebound must be as valuable as the offensive rebound it prevents your opponent from getting.

"I am willing to donate to the charity that is working on the prevention of whatever the hell Dick Vitale has." - noobmaster

by rickmbari on Jan 22, 2012 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

We had the better percentage

8/21= .381, 12/32= .375

If we had missed 12 more shots, at that rate we would have out rebounded them.

by Unseld2Beard on Jan 23, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

We shot well

Cures a lot of ills. 55% is going to win ballgames. Bullet was a big factor. PS made plays down the stretch because he didnt force. There is a lot on his shoulders, he has admitted that.
Its a start, and I am very happy. I know I am a downer sometimes. I think RP is mailing it in. But last night was good. I had a Sweet Surrender to celebrate, possibly my new tradition.

I'm waiting to hear about Ware

After he mouthed off to Pitino in the first half, I don’t think he ever got back in the game. It looks to me like his attitude is a problem, and I’m not sure it’s a coincidence that our slide started when he joined the squad. Was he put in his place at halftime? Was he quietly sulking on the bench for the second half? And did that contribute to our (and Peyton’s) reawakening in the second half? I want to know these things.

Ware did *not* mouth off

I replayed that a number of times.
My interpretation: He was confused about the prior set, and still wasn’t getting it while CRP was talking to him. Something about the number two, obviously, since coach held two fingers in front of him as the players convened from the floor. Then, as coach started talking to someone else, the light bulb went on for Ware and he made the facial expressions of “Oh damn I get it now” which immediately morphed into “Oh fuck”. At no point did it look at all to me like he said anything negative to coach, or about coach.

I saw nothing in the brief shot shown on TV that made me believe Ware got out of line, they were discussing the previous play, that was all; and Ware simply made it known that he did not understand where he goofed up. And, then, after listening, he did understand.

Can definitly take some positives from last night

1) Not only did we maintain control down the stretch, it was a team effort. Chane, Gourgi, Siva, and Kuric all made some clutch plays in the last seven minutes.
2) Siva has been looking better from a health POV for the last few games, i think last night really turned a corner for him there. He’s dunking with ease now and getting down floor quickly in transition. I don’t think his bad ankle gets enough credit for his down play.
3) Kuric not only hit everything in sight, but there was only one shot where i noticed him jumping to the side instead of straight up. He’s been drifting sideways a bunch this year and the shot has not dropped once (until last night) for him when he does that.
4) For a few games now Gourgi has looked like a legit scoring threat. Last night Chane joined the party too. If these two can keep it up, our offense can generate points. More importantly for Chane, when he’s posting up Kuric is usually his man on the wing. That defender typically doesn’t slide down to help on Chane, so Chane should be in position to do the one-on-one a lot. Him scoring from the post is huge to this offense.
5) Chane reminds me a lot of Garcia his first season. Not the same style of play obviously, but this is about the point in the year when Garcia started playing decently his first year here. Hopefully Chane follows suit.
6) The cards are now 4-0 on the season when woodford is drank at the dlpfis79 homestead. I think we all know who the real MVP is.

I don't know. Sometimes a player who's seen as having "Big Upside" can get hot-HOT down the stretch and in the tournament and create enough buzz for himself to move onto draft boards.

He played last night like a possible draft pick. He finally found his offensive groove. Hit free throws, rebounded, and was in total…..

Nope

Saw D-Will in person last year twice in Tucson (vs. USC and UCLA). They are totally different players. Williams is a far superior ball handler with outside one on one skills. Much quicker and much better jumper (both in height and quickness) Perhaps Chane will be an excellent three point shooter but his body type will never allow him to play the same style with the same effectiveness.

I don't think he really has much nba upside.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Chane and think he’ll be a great college player. But he’s too short to be a high level nba PF and he’s too slow to move to the 3. He may get faster but he’d have to lose weight to do it and I think that would affect his power moves near the basket. Then again nba scouts do a lot things I don’t understand.

Are we finally trending up?

First, I am NOT a statistician, or even the most educated of fans. But, I’ve always thought that the key stats for a team playing well are the percentage of points from assists, and assist to turnover ratio.
I think we can agree that there was a definite drop off in team cohesion/chemistry after the Memphis game, culminating in a total collapse in Providence.
Team meeting ensues, and these numbers are trending back up. Still not good, but the offense is making more shots, and more are coming off assists, which is how it should be on a well functioning team.

As I said, not a statistician, but interesting. Also of note, The numbers actually looked good against Providence, but they made 37 shots to our 26.

Wins in those two games would’ve made things very different the last three weeks.

Oh my god, are you kidding me? The last three weeks would've seemed like a Kumbaya circle compared to what we had here.

If we won those two games. Go read Eric Crawfords article this morning and how he talks about the “end game”

Already read it. Absolutely failed to "end" those two games.

We sucked against Providence, played a better UK team, and missed Kyle (among others) in the Marquette game.

But, GU and ND….those two games should’ve been wins.

first OT vs ND

Shot 50% from the line. Just one more made and it’s game over.

WE HIT OUR FREE THROWS,

AND BUNNIES!!

sorry, had to do it.

Last night felt really good. I know Pitt isn’t the cream of the crop, but we got a win on the road in a damn tough environment. The offense looked crisp, Chane and Gorgs were beasts inside, Siva looked a LOT better, KSTMFK, and did I mention the Free Throws or Bunnies??

I think its safe to say if Kyle was in the Marquette game we wouldn’t have lost that one. He made a HUGE difference last night. Good to see him step up and show what a Senior needs to do. Did anyone notice how Erin Andrews seemed a little "bothered" to be in the presence of the King? Maybe it was just me.

He is the Key!

Siva’s 7 and 7 last night were huge. We will go as far as he takes us. I was actually saying, get it to Peyton in the last 10 minutes of the game, what a relief! We will make the NCAA’s!

What a clod.

I love beating Pittsburgh even more after seeing that sign.

had a blast at the game

Although I almost got escorted out at the end when I broke out a C A R D S chant during one of Pitts free throws and not to mention you could hear a pin drop
Ya see, the crazy amnt of bourbon I had in my system caused me to miss calculate that we had the game well in hand and there was only 2 minutes left
I swear the whole place turned on Q and gave me death looks
I don’t know, seemed like a good idea at the time and I really wasn’t trying to be disrespectful
After a couple F Us from some older couples I realized it wasn’t the greatest idea….that coupled with the KFC bucket on me head upset a few of the locals
Luckily my 6’2 uncle with billy clubs for hands got me out of there after the game ha ha ha ..
Will say Pitts student section is just as energetic as any I’ve ever seen and the besides the chant incident the Pitt faithful were cool just as grumpy as we wouldve been had we lost so I don’t blame them
Although Cardicus Prime had a fight picked with him and he was on crutches so that’s kind of messed up
All in all great win and glad I was there to support our boys

How to post a picture in your comments:

Step 1 – Upload your picture to an internet photo-sharing site like Flickr or Picasa – preferably NOT photobucket because my employer blocks that one and I won’t be able to see your photo (Why don’t you think about my feelings for once?).
Step 2 – Once it’s uploaded, copy the URL address of your picture. Usually you can right click on the image in the web browser and see this option in the menu that pops up.
Step 3 – In a Card Chronicle comment box, type an exclamation point, then paste the URL, then type another exclamation point. There should be NO spaces before or after your exclamation points.
Step 4 – Click the PREVIEW button. If you cannot see your photo in the comment preview, you did something wrong.
Step 5 – If preview looks good, click Post.

Great info sarasota. Maybe you can help me with this.

I saw Mike posted one of the smiley face figures that has motion to it. Looked them up and there are some pretty funny ones with sound too. I tried to post one on a game thread but couldn’t. Can you give me a step by step like the above for this?

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 23, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure exactly what you're referring to

but if the “moving picture” is a .gif, and you have the URL for it, it can be posted in a comment just like a picture using the directions above. But .gif’s don’t have sound (Thank God). Almost any picture or gif you find on the internet can be posted in a comment this way.
You want a smiley face with motion… YOU ASKED FOR IT:
