Are we losing willis too?

Guys are we losing willis too? With him being right in our backyard? If he picks kentucky, I feel like the recruiting battle in defintely over. Calipari is just gonna get who he wants and we will get the bottom of the barrel. With willis his family has always been card fans. Heck he has even been seen right here in freedom hall and yum, watching games wearing the red and black. I heard a recruiter from west virginia say that he thought that willis will be a great college player in a couple of years. But thought that ky is where he would go. I sure hope this dont happen. We really need a player of his caliber. It would really help our recruiting to have a player like willis already committed.

Why would he come here?

While it probably does not make a difference to Pitino, why would a kid pick a school where over 80% of message boards are calling for the coach’s head? It might have been doubtful anyway, but this was not a good time for him to make a decision for the cards.

If he comes to UK, he would be probably riding the bench as well.

He’s most likely not as good as any of the other UK freshmen or many of the returning players.

by jrcard on Jan 20, 2012 8:25 AM EST reply actions

We don't need him. I think he's way overrated at 23 on the rivals' board. More around 60.

If he goes to UK, he’s doing himself no justice. He’ll be recruited over, and have to compete with Wiltjer. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Losing him implies we once "had" him.

And if there’s one thing we should all realize about recruiting, UofL doesn’t “have” anyone until they are on campus.

true

i think we “lost” teague…but i’m not sure if willis was ever locked up

Better for Willis at UofL!

If Willis is truly just down to UofL and UK (meaning IU and Purdue are off the board), I really think it is in his best intrest to be a Card. He would be a backup for both schools his freshman year, but Cal is recruiting 3 PFs that are rated higher than Willis in the class of 2013. If Cal’s legendary recruiting role continues, it would be logical to think UK will sign at least one of those 3 guys. And the following year, they will sign one of the top 3 PFs in the class of 2014, 2015, etc. Meaning Willis’ PT wouldn’t be great as a frosh, but might in fact get worse over time.
At UofL, he would be Chane’s backup…but would get minutes as a frosh and start to see his PT increase as he learns the system. Willis could be the highest rated post player that RP pulls in over a 2-3 year period…unless something weird happens in Lexington Cal will nab at least 4-5 post players that are better than Willis in the same time period. If you aren’t a top 20 recruit the only arguement for signing with UK in this day and age are front row seats to ballgames, because you are only going to get garbage minutes in games.
As someone who despises all things UK, I hate to admit that Cal has a monopoly on the All-American/5* guys, but the silver lining to that is that 4* guys who know what they are doingshouldnever play for Cal. Cal’s teams will evolve into a team of 4 NBA lottery picks, 3 guys with delusions of grandeur (who could star at WKU but will be neglected and ignored at UK) and 6 future middle school PE teachers/insurance agents in hicktown Ky—whose only job in school will be to pump up the team’s GPA.

Having 2 open scrimmages probably hurt attendance

Would be a shame if that actually mattered in this case though.

What I was thinking.

Living around here and growing up a UofL fan, I kinda doubt he doesn’t know about our fan support and let the scrimmage influence his decision.

losing Willis?

This is news? Why are some people shocked by this?
IMO CRP probably told the 6’8 190-200lb fwd that he needed to get his body fat % down if he wanted to play for us…

At this point in the season we could also lose a game to Bellarmine

If you want to see an amazing TEAM go see them. Unbelievable passing by every player and great team defense. A real joy to watch. Old school at it’s finest. And better athletes than one might think, not to mention B-Ball IQs through the roof.

We live five minutes from there

Cheap tickets, free parking, cheap concessions, and a lot of fun. Seats 2,600 which will drop as they are going to replace some of the bleachers with chairbacks. It’s a real time trip to go there. And let me repeat: Fun, fun, fun and ain’t no one taking the T-Bird away,

by cbcard on Jan 22, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Not really upset. I think this dude is way overrated. He is good

because of his height. No one really matches up to him. Surrround him against BE centers and I bet he doesn’t really do much. Looked slow to me when I saw some clips. Plus why would anyone ever think a recruit would come to UL when UK is involved.

by tnowka on Jan 20, 2012 2:09 PM EST reply actions

He is not "over rated" he's a very good player. Also, something many people don't realize about him is that he's only 16 years old.

He’s a very young Junior, so as good as he is now,… his ceiling is much higher

I don't know man..he just didn't really excite me. I would like to see him

goes against someone of his size to get a better judgement. Kind of reminds me of Zach Price right now. Alot of these big kids at the HS level seem to dominate cause of their size and as a result their ranking is up. Do you think Smardo or Jennings ever lived up to their ranking? Your right on the age thou I didn’t realize that.

by tnowka on Jan 20, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Saw him and

wonder about potential. Could turn out terrific but he doesn’t seem to want to use his height and go inside, seems to be much more comfortable on the perimeter. If he turns out to be a Steve Novak we will have missed a goodun. But unless he bulks up and learns the mindset of a 4 he will have trouble otherwise.

The recruiting battle has long been over

I’ve defended Pitino as much as anyone. I think he’s a good coach. But, Calipari is killing him in recruiting. I don’t think a reasonable person could say otherwise. He’s killing everyone, but especially pitino. Anyone they both want goes to UK, except sexy bullet.

by johnnyjoejohnson on Jan 20, 2012 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Bullet

Rick is like a Bullet right now and Cal is the 20 ton Atom bomb. Speaking of bullet. If you’ve got a name like that wouldn’t you have to be fast..or fast at something? Rick gives our players some weird nicknames sometimes….He sucks at nicknames. If Bullet is the only recruit we beat Cal for it is not going to look well for us till 2017.

by CountryCard on Jan 20, 2012 3:25 PM EST reply actions

yeah, but calipari is doing something no one has ever done before. How many straight #1 recruiting classes?

If there’s someone who could out-recruit him, I would be all for giving pitino the axe and hiring him. But, that’s obvious.

Cal knows what these kids want to hear

Coach Cal primarily targets 5 star recruits (with the occasional 4 star here and there). He knows exactly what these kids want and at that level, they all want the same thing. The NBA. And that’s what he’s selling. With each passing year, he can point to more and more players that played for him/Kentucky, in a lot of cases for only one year, that are now in the NBA. NBA scouts visit the Craft Center on a regular basis. The team wears Nike/LeBron shoes. Hell, LeBron has even attended a game or two since Calipari took over. Drake and Jay-Z have both visited the locker room. When the lockout was going on, there were NBA players playing pickup games with the team. How many 5 star high school recruits aren’t intrigued enough by all that to at least consider Kentucky if Calipari is actively recruiting them? Obviously he doesn’t end up getting every player he wants but if you look, as someone just did a few days ago in an article posted here, at the top 10 players in a given recruiting class, how many of them list Kentucky as a school they’re interested in? A lot. I’m a huge UK fan and alum but I’m also realistic enough to realize that kids today aren’t so much interested in UK because it’s UK but rather because of what Coach Cal is selling. No matter what you think of the man, you have to admit that he’s a master marketer. He knows his target audience, he knows what they want, and that’s what he sells.

UK....

has something to offer them….Cal is a great recruiter, but he never signed that many #1 classes, in any at UMass or Memphis that im aware of. Obviously the combo of UK/Cal is getting it done recruiting wise. If he’s doing something illegal the NCAA will bust him/UK sooner or later but the kids aren’t concerned about that.

Lets get it on!!!!

by Magnoliacat on Jan 20, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

He has nothing to offer a mid 50s player.

Top 15, I understand. But if he thinks hes a one and done, hes high.

Willis is lame...please believe it

He was totally non existent in the state semi’s against Rowan Co….Adam Wing who has committed to OK State and is unreal totally outplayed him. Also Troutman on Bullitt East outplayed him as well. He is not the next Scott Padgett. He will sit the bench like Jon Hood and Paulson and never be allowed to contribute b/c he plays for a stupid coach who knows that their stupid fans will cheer every game for Willis to get in and make an uncontested three or dunk…yay

by Scott_Howard42 on Jan 20, 2012 4:45 PM EST reply actions

bigger deal than we are letting on

First of all the guy is in the top 25 on Rivals…he is good. Biggest recruit in the state in years (no including Chane here since he was only a half KY boy) Maybe not come in right away average 15 and 10 and leave for the NBA in a year good, but he would have been a heck of a 4 year player for Louisville. The fact that he was sitting in our own backyard and grew up a Louisville fan still chose UK speaks volumes. This is a big deal. Not a good sign at all for recruiting or the staff at Louisville. Anyone that thinks this is anything but a big smack in the face of Cardinal basketball is delusional. Landing him would have also given the whole program confidence going forward.

There was chatter about Aaron Gordon when Wyking got here

Any more talk about Coach Jones going after him? That dude is a beast and would destroy a Willis, point blank period. Seems like I rember reading something about Jones recruiting his older brother as well. Any info on this?

by cardchomp on Jan 20, 2012 11:02 PM EST reply actions

Yep.

All I can tell you is that WJ is the reason that his bro ended up at New Mexico. He’s got that “relationship” (God I have learned to hate that word) built in already with the family. A couple months back Aaron said that he had been contacted and talked to quite a bit by staff. I would assume that the heat will pick up after the season.
