Rakeem Buckles Tears ACL In Other Knee, Will Miss This Season And Next

From UofLSports:

University of Louisville junior forward Rakeem Buckles suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during the Cardinals' game at Marquette on Monday and will miss the remainder of season and all of next season with his second career knee injury.

"I don't think any of us could imagine this happening to such a fine young man," said U of L Coach Rick Pitino. "All of us are just crushed. We had thought he had just hyperextended the knee when he had turned for a simple block out and it turned out to be terribly wrong. We will stay close to Rakeem so we can keep his spirits high."

"Coming back from a second major knee surgery, Rakeem's recovery is expected to take well over a year," said UofL Men's Basketball Trainer Fred Hina. "We will work with him closely on his recovery and will apply for a fifth year for him to play his final season as a Cardinal."

Career ending?

I mean, how can it not be? If it had to happen though, I’m glad he’s at least with Hina, one of the best in the biz. Keep your head up Rak!

Don't they have waivers

RS still counts as one of our 13--Will Rick have to be a dick?

Rak can use a medical RS next year and keep his 4th year of eligibilty for the 13-14 season, but the scholly we hold for him will still count against our 13.

If RP can pull in a big recruit it might be best to do the cutthroat thing and drop Rak. That is a “dick move” and many would burn RP for not doing the “right” thing…but it might be best for the program. Because after tearing his ACL in both knees, I have to think this prospects of playing at the major college level (much less pro) are going to be slim. It might really be in his best intrest to finish college next year and then transfer, if he graduates next year, he can transfer to another school without sitting out a year (as long as he enrolls in a graduate program not offered at UofL—its the same thing Goode is doing this year at Farleigh Dickinson).
I know that is a bad thing to say and i threw up in my mouth a little as i typed it.

as if our karma could get worse?

Seriously, we’ve got 2 guys done for season with ACL tears, 1 guy yet to play with a bum shoulder, and a 4th who has played a coupla games due to some knee injury. Not to mention the aches, pains, concussions, and sprains that have caused game-by-game issues…

Yeah, better not tempt our karma

Hina says he will work with him through his recovery

and apply for a fifth year, so its sounds like he will stay around. Rick says they will stay close to him, Rickspeak is hard to read, but it sounds like Rak is going to be part of the team. I don’t suppose Rak has the ability to pay his own way, as others on the team have done, so if the NCAA makes no provision to let the school keep him on unless he keeps his athletic scholly then I believe we will not have that scholly to offer. Rick did say something earlier about this being Swop’s last season, though.

by Unseld2Beard on Jan 17, 2012 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

scholly for injured players

i was thinking if a player was hurt, and unable to play the school could give another scholly to him (like we did for Clarence Holloway when it was discovered that he had a heart condition)…however that might not apply here, if this isn’t a career ending injury.

by Hawkins3403 on Jan 17, 2012 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

I strongly disagree

First of all, I think it would be morally wrong for the university to encourage him to leave.

And second of all, I don’t think it would be good for the program. Imagine the reputation we would get among recruits: “Yeah, they love you until something bad happens, and then they push you out the door.”

by BostonCardFan on Jan 17, 2012 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Thats what they do in the SEC in football.

Except its called over recruiting. Even more of a dick thing to do. The thing to do in Rocks case is for the university to give him a academic scholly, to finish his degree.

by ville 606 on Jan 17, 2012 8:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Sorry to sound preachy

with the “morally wrong” bit. But ALL I care about right now is Rak and his recovery.

It’s gonna be a long road, but I would hate for him to feel like the university and the fans weren’t standing by him right now. I was psyched to see Hina’s quote about the “final year as a Cardinal.”

Found something interesting

while trying to research NCAA rules about scholarships for injured players. It seems the school isn’t even responsible for the medical bills. Glad the U of L is going to pick up the tab.

“2. Hold schools responsible for their players’ sports-related medical expenses.
The NCAA does not require schools to cover sports-related injuries – it’s optional. College athletes injured during sports-related workouts should not have to pay for medical expenses out of their own pockets. Universities should be mandated to pay for all of their athletes’ sports-related medical expenses.”

schools paying for medical bills

i would hope any D-1 school would do the same. Even if they didn’t have a shitload of money like UofL.

I feel for the kid too.

But we got a bench full of hobbled ass basketball players right now. Facts is facts. If there is a way to give him anoth.er scholly so he can finish his degree so be it. A friend of mine played for UK as one of the Unforgetables, Pitino tried to pull his basketball scholly and get him to take a golf scholarship to free up a basketball scholarship.

Jesus H. Perhaps, now that he is hurt, he should just be taken out back and shot?

Do you have zero understanding of the concept of “teammate”? He has been a part of the program for years, been up day after day at 6:00 am for lifting/training/gym, but now – well $@%# him?

Anyone ever read the book of Job?

Yeah, this season is kind of like that. It’s all about perseverance and keeping the faith and all that.
Personally I think Job just got f***ed over for no good reason.
sigh

by CardiacCards on Jan 17, 2012 7:27 PM EST reply actions

Job is all about innocent suffering because God told Satan that Job was the most righteous person on Earth

and the whole theological question revolving around this book is why do good people suffer? That’s the million dollar question

by TCUCard on Jan 17, 2012 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

The question you referenced from the overall theme in Job actually has an answer in Hebrews.

“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” – Hebrews 12:6

Especially since this team is so spiritual, with Rick calling it the most spiritually-minded team he has ever coached, I’m with johnnyjoejohnson in that the question you asked is a much better question, even though I think that for a different reason.
What I guess I’m trying to say (other than saying that there IS an answer to why good people suffer), is that Job suffered because with his spirituality and faith he could take it, and this team seems to be the same way. It is really sad to see such a nice young guy like Rak go through this, but if any team can take this (not basketball-wise at the moment, but at least spiritually and mentally) it would seem to be the Cards.

I was just pointing out that if we were going to bring in a frosh PF (which was the whole premise behind this comment threat that started with cardchomp’s “Too early to talk about possibility of getting a PF in this upcoming solo man class?” comment), this late in the recruiting process you’re probably not going to find one that can play right away that doesn’t have some big issue.

Sad :-(

I’m a UK fan/alum and I hate to hear about something like this happening to a kid no matter who he plays for. But it’s especially tragic in this young mans case to have already suffered through an injury like this once before. :-( I wish him a speedy recovery and hope that he’ll get to play one final season. Regardless of the uniform, you can’t help but feel bad for these kids who pour their heart and soul into the game and then suffer an injury like this.

Someone post a history of the injuries in the last 2 years

Does anything of this magnitude happen in other programs? I’m genuinely curious if UofL is truly a freakish outlier or closer to the norm.

by CardsRuleBE on Jan 17, 2012 9:20 PM EST reply actions

OK, then let's be logical about this

Either what’s happening is truly just a freakish outlier statistically and could happen to any program at any time, but against high odds. Or, something different is happening within the UofL program to account for the abnormally high injury rate. What do you guys think?

by CardsRuleBE on Jan 17, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

I have said before, we should look at this from a non emotional, purely business standpoint.

By that I mean, if a Fortune 500 company had a plant that was experiencing an abnormally high rate of sickness, or accidents, to the point where it was seriously disrupting the productivity of the plant, they would investigate to find out why. If it proved to be just bad luck, then fine. But they would find out the facts. No offense but taking the word of the plant manager that it was just bad luck simply wouldn’t fly after multiple years. They would conduct an thorough and independent investigation and let the facts fall where they may.

I don’t know if anyone knows why this is happening, but if it were me, I would sure as hell find out. And like I said, if it proves to be just terribly bad luck, so be it. But I would want to know for sure.

Try this...

Maybe it was their unis, but they looked like they had football players on the court and they beat our asses. Perhaps the OCD obsession with body fat is doing more harm than good. How about less marathon runner body and more actual sharpening of basketball skills? Sorry, I’m trying really really hard not to lose it here. I really am. But I am 100% at the end of my rope with this bullshit. Can we please stop dancing around the OBVIOUS FACT that there is a problem with how CRP is running this program?

My heart just sank

Poor Rak…

Thing is-even if he manages to come back full strength, the little nagging voice in the back of his head will seriously screw with his confidence level on the court. A major knee injury is one of the most difficult things for an athlete to recover from, especially a basketball player. The strength required to maintain stability of the knee is critical, and players essentially have to "re-learn" how to jump, twist, rotate, etc. All the while, they’re thinking of re-injuring. This X2? I just don’t see him ever being back to 2010 Buckles. Hope I’m wrong, but doesn’t look good.

Best of luck with your recovery, Bucks.

by twistedwedge on Jan 17, 2012 9:39 PM EST reply actions

God damn. I told my boss earlier today that he had hyperextended his knee.

He asked me how could it get any worse. I replied, hopefully it doesn’t get any worse.

I love Rak, I love his attitude, and I really love his game. He was shaping up to be a better E5. This is tragic. Hearts and prayers go out to him and his family.

by WhiskeyRider on Jan 17, 2012 9:42 PM EST reply actions

If Rak truly misses next year

18-20 months seems to be an awfully long time to be out for an ACL tear. Certainly Fred Hina knows better than I but I just thought most athletes these days could come back in 10-11 months time with that type of injury. Perhaps they will just proceed more cautiously with Rak the second time around.

At any rate if that hold true..then for next year:

Out: Rak, KK, CS5, (maybe Swop)
In: Marra, Rozier, Hancock, fully healthy Blackshear, fully healthy Siva, not to mention fully healthy SVT, Gorgui (with 15-20 extra pounds), much improved Nunez and Price.

Alot of ifs in there but I would think the BB Cards are due for some good luck/karma in the injury department after all they have been through the last couple of years. Good luck to Rak. This season is not over but its hard to think how things won’t be better next season. Here’s hoping that bears out anyway.

by gnashbar on Jan 17, 2012 9:43 PM EST reply actions

I could be wrong

But I believe te extra time to recover for this one is due to the fact that his “good knee” isnt yet 100% from the same injury.

by 140sNotEnough on Jan 17, 2012 10:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Just got to this thread

but the injury thing has gone way beyond a statistical anomaly. I don’t know if it is the practices Pitino runs or what, but it just isn’t logical to blame this on bad luck. There has to be one or more factors that are at least contributing to what is happening to Louisville basketball players and their unbelievably high propensity to sustain an injury. We have had almost decades worth of injuries in one year.

I am starting to come to the conclusion that it is our shoes. I thinkknow there isThursday something about themit that isit causing unnatural stresses on ourthe players feet ankles and knees. I would really like to know what other teams wear the same footwear as the Cards and if they are experiencing a significant increase in lower limb injuries.

I know I am grasping, but the HAS to be some logical explanation for the occurences that have befallen our team.

I've said something about the shoes

I’m just a recreational ball player but my mom and I are serious runners. I have had shin splints when I switch what type of shoes that I run in. My mother also got a stress fracture shortly after switching what kind of shoes she runs in(this is after years of never having any serious problems). I don’t know if this is the case but I know from experience that differnt shoes can affect different in sports.
