Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Given that there seems to be a 50/50 split regarding whether UL's injuries are a significant cause of this team's recent performance, I was trying to find a historical context (i.e. most injuries suffered by one college BB team) or some metric regarding the effect of injured players on BB teams. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that the effect of injuries has been statistically analyzed other than the above link, which is fairly interesting.

Putting the increasingly familiar disappointment/frustration goggles aside, I would love to know the degree to which CCers attribute our recent struggles directly to injuries?

I'm so sick of hearing injury excuses.

Do the injuries make a difference? Hell yes, of course. BUT even with all the injuries we still have Kuric, C. Smith, Dieng, R. Smith, Siva, Bullet, Price, Nunez, Behanan, Buckles, Swopshire, Ware and I’m probably forgetting someone. So I don’t see how adding Blackshear, Marra, and Van Treese would make much of a difference. Newsflash: Wayne Blackshear hasn’t played basketball in a year, he’s not going to be good even when he comes back.

Bullet sucks? Really well he played solid minutes last year without turning the ball over 50 times per game cough Siva cough.

Price and Nunez don’t know how to play basketball? Well, guess we’ll have to take Pitinos word for it because we never see them play.

Ware sucks? Then why did we recruit him? Did they not watch any tape on the guy? Did we just want him because other people did? I’m sure he will come along by his senior year like all Pitino players.

Buckles, Swopshire and Siva haven’t recovered? Maybe, who knows. I don’t really see what Siva’s ankle injury has to do with him making sloppy passes and poor decisions, but whatever. Swopshire hasn’t shown any signs of injury to me.

I guess my point is yes we have been hit by a lot of injuries but we also have an extremely deep bench. I just don’t think we are losing these games because of injury. Yes we would be BETTER without any injuries, but we shouldn’t get blown out by Providence either way.

Right.

What does that have to do with our collapse after coming out 18-2?

Did you read what you wrote?

I meant

that they were out for only one game. We still lost games with them.

Marra was/is a vocal leader. Padgett-lite, if you will.

Never discount the loss of a heady player – especially when they are 6’ 5", athletic, a good passer/ball handler/defender, and able to play 3 positions on the floor.

No doubt injuries are impacting us.

And while I agree with you Jason that we shouldn’t get blown out by Providence even with the injuries we’ve had, you must factor in how injuries impact our team mentally. Players that can’t contribute on the court are rarely a leader for your team.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that C. Smith, Russ and Chane are among our best performers and they also haven’t missed a game yet due to injury, nor are they coming off a major injury from last year. They’ve all been able to practice and go 100% without interruption thus far. You’ve seen what Gorgui did against a physical Marquette team with his “tweaked” neck…not much. (The DePaul game was MUCH less physical.) We’ll see if Kuric can return soon how he performs coming off an injury.

I’m not saying we’d be undefeated right now without all these injuries, but I am saying that you can not discretize injuries from team chemistry and the mental execution of the game. They are most certainly interwoven and I think Louisville’s team this year exhibits that.

I don't even disagree with you.

I guess I’m just sick of the excuses. It’s always something. with our team. I just want results. Our players have injuries? Our prize recruit never makes it here? Big east is stacked this year? Tough shit. Find a way to win.
