Pitino is an idiot and not for any reason you are thinking

I have been on his side but his comments criticizing Russ for not rebounding are asinine and perhaps even borderline insane. Russ had five rebounds. Little Russ who is 6' with lift shoes. How does this compare to the other guys? 6' 4" Kuric 2 rebounds (in 38 minutes no less). 6' 6" wide body Behanan 5. 6' 11" Dieng 5. 6' 7" Buckles 3. 6' 8" Swopshire 2. Let's recap. Russ tied for our high rebounder. He had as many as Kuric (I think based on this game he could star in a remake of The Invisable Man) and Buckles combined. Or MORE than Kuric and Swopshire combined! Russ hit half his shots. The rest of the team shot 24%. Rick get your head out of your posterior and figure out how to get Russ some help instead of criticizing the only guy on the team who can play offense.

I don't hate him

I just think his criticism is absolutely one of the dumbest things he has ever said.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

Lol.

Considering his infamous analogy over Syracuse and Pitt’s defection from the Big East, that’s pretty damning criticism.

by TNCardfan on Jan 1, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

Russ has shown signs of greatness.

But needs to start playing smarter, then we would see what he truly can accomplish.

by TNCardfan on Jan 1, 2012 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Nope

This comment was about Russ.
“He’s impressive doing things with the ball. He’s not impressive (rebounding). He’s got to go in there and hit somebody. He’s taking tickets on the perimeter, and we’re in a fight five verses four.”

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

Well

If Russ is being coached to do a job and he’s ignoring those instructions, CRP is right to criticize. We can question the decision, but I don’t think it’s our place to question CRP over calling out any player for not doing what he is being coached to do in a game.

by CardsRuleBE on Jan 1, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Don't you realize he got as many or more rebounds than any of our bigs?

And as many as our two starting guards COMBINED. What in the name of God does he expect from a pint sized kid? And let me add that one without we would have lost by 25 or more. The kid is not Superman and it is unfair for him to be criticized publicly for this when we outperformed everyone else on the team offensively and in rebounding.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

I get it

I’m a huge fan of the kid. I too find it puzzling that CRP would call him out like that after such a tremendous game. I’m just saying that we don’t coach him and he apparently was doing something they have been coaching him not to do (hanging back on the perimeter) in those situations. We can question the coaching, but I’m just saying if I’m CRP and a kid is ignoring my instructions for whatever reason, I may well call him out in public too, if I think that’s how you get to that particular player. Know what I mean?

by CardsRuleBE on Jan 1, 2012 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think you understand what he was saying at all. I heard the same comments

CRP was not addressing quantity at all. He was saying, Russ needs to get in there and create disruption and run interference to allow our bigs a better chance.

by ptichenor1 on Jan 1, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I think he's talking about on the defensive end.

Almost all of Russ’ boards came on the offensive end, usually long rebounds off of his own or someone else’s missed three. As I recall, he had two or three rebounds on the final two offensive possessions alone.

On the defensive end, none of our guards were helping. It was basically two on four all the time.

by CARD_G6 on Jan 1, 2012 12:13 PM EST reply actions

Actually he got two RBs under the basket

And for the sake of arguement let’s pretend he got all on the offensive end on the perimeter. He didn’t but lets say so. Then if he didn’t get those rebounds UK players would have and they would have been off to the races on a fast break. That’s what happens when you send five guys to the boards and there’s a long rebound.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

So why not get on the guys who should be rebounding and weren't?

His comments were like having a QB throw for five touchdowns and then criticizing him for not running for 100 yards.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 12:30 PM EST reply actions

Because he wants Russ to be a star

He wants him to rebound more because he now realizes he will have to play him 30 minutes a game because no one else on this team can fucking score.

by Ellis from Compton on Jan 1, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying he's right

i’m just trying to explain Pitino-logic, which is probably a terrible idea. Russ had half of our points yesterday. Everyone else was either afraid to shoot or was just awful when they tried. Pitino knows Russ is going to have to play some serious minutes, so he is just trying to light a fire under his ass about rebounding.

by Ellis from Compton on Jan 1, 2012 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

So is trying to explain Pitino-logic a terrible idea or is Pitino-logic a terrible idea?

The kid was our top rebounder! If anyone should be called out for lack of rebounding it sure isn’t him. And that’s by any logic.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Both!

I agree with you. Rick loves Russ he’s just trying to pull one of his classic motivational ploys, IMO. Also, and maybe I’m reaching here, but it may be one of those comments to pull the team together. As evidenced by Siva’s comments after Western Kentucky, the guys are fully aware Russ has been saving their asses for weeks. Maybe Pitino is getting on Russ just to try to prove a point that everyone has room to improve.

by Ellis from Compton on Jan 1, 2012 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

Could be but.....

…..it makes RP look silly. And it could backfire. If Russ is like Milt Wagner, no problem. If he is like Billy Thompson it’s a really, really, really bad idea. I don’t know his personality and presumably RP does. But it makes RP look like an ass. Why not try to light a fire under the underacheivers? They are the ones who should be called out. They can’t all be like Billy.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Gotta admit, I am with cb on this one

Singling out a player who was you top scorer, top rebounder, top percentage shooter and happen to be the smallest guy on the floor for either squad seems absolutely absurd to me. Just not supported by the facts. I think cb said it well, how can you call out a guard for not rebounding, when he outrebounded every center/forward on the team. Simply a bizzare statement.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 1, 2012 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty much everything Pitino says makes him look stupid

Yet he continues to talk. Really do agree with you though, why didn’t he call Behanan out? Kid is killing us! First he gets a dumbass tech that puts us in a huge hole, then he kills any chance of a comeback by fouling Davis on a 3. Davis!? If anyone deserves his wrath, it is Chane.

by Ellis from Compton on Jan 1, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely right.

And while I am a big Rak fan, I must admit I am disappointed that he has not played better since his return. Hope it’s just rust and will come around soon but before his injury he was our leading rebounder and had a very good 3 pt shooting percentage. Hasn’t looked anything like that guy so far.

by Carolina Cardinal on Jan 1, 2012 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Poor players, Pitino's criticizing them.

Well, I think that it wasn’t fair to single out Russ though, because a lot of times on d Gorgui was IT going for rebounds.

Which leaves out Behanan, Kuric, Buckles, and Swopshire

The guys that should be hitting the boards. Hell, Rick might as well called out SVT along with Russ. And Blackshear and Marra too.

We were in Dallas in '86

Buddy from Memphis called me and offered me his Final Four tickets (Memphis lost in the regional final the same day we won). Only it turned out to be ONE ticket, not two. We flew down anyway and eventually found a second ticket without having to do a second mortgage. Steve Alford’s father, Sam, who was still coaching high school, was trying to scalp his pair for $1000 (in ’86 dollars mind you).

My wife sat upstairs in a corner and I sat downstairs in the LSU end zone. After we won on Saturday we sold our two singles and upgraded to a decent pair. So we had a great view of the most important airball in UofL history.

With a minute or two to go

My mild mannered wife elbowed me in the ribs and shouted “Look at that asshole!” A Duke cheerleader had just popped a bottle of champagne. Needless to say their lead didn’t hold up. I suspect he still has problems with premature ejaculations.

This post should be deleted.

After seeing this and other posts (e.g. disappearing Kyle) here at CC I carefully listened to all post game pressers.

It seems clear to me there has been a lot of misinterpretation of CRP comments. I suppose a lot of it spewed from frustration, alcohol or, almost inconceivably, a mixture of the two.

Not to say Pitino-speak isn’t ever confusing, but to me it was perfectly clear he was NOT calling out Russ for not rebounding. He pointed out that Russ wasn’t mixing in the other bodies down low to make it easier on the rest of the team to rebound. Not only did Coach not call Russ out – he did praise Russ for a few things. That means to me this post is as unfortunate as it could be. One should never sling the word idiot around too quickly. Sorry, cb, as I usually enjoy or agree with your posts, but you’re dead wrong here.

The one person he did call out for not rebounding was Kuric. Interestingly, he mentioned wanting to get SVT back without mentioning Angel or Zach.

Further more, the rest of CRP’s comments were very upbeat. “We’ll fight for a good seed” is another misinterpreted sentence. Bottom line, CRP thinks this team is going to be much better by Dance Time, and that’s a pretty damn good sentiment to hear.

P.S. Cal praised the Cards quite a bit (which if he did at all, should be somewhat surprising) – even went as far as to say UL is a top 5 team.

You have your opinion and I have mine

But if CRP wants Russ to stay healthy he better not ask him to bang around too much in there. He is too little to bang with big bodies and achieve anything but adding to our injury list.

Its hilarious we are having all this talk about a 3 star 160 lb guard..

Who in the world would have thought that Russ would have turned into the go to guy. Not to mention he gets the the rim at will. Against anyone in the country.

Go Russ

The world is strange isn't it?

But starting with the Memphis State (was, is and always will be Memphis State) Russ is not only our MVP, he is almost the only one on the team in the running. Without him we couldn’t score 60 points on a good high school team.

OK, maybe we could score 63.

by cbcard on Jan 1, 2012 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

I may be wrong but Ware seems a little like a taller longer Russ Smith

Ware seems to be a very athletic guy who wants to drive. Im kinda disappointed we didnt see more of him in the UK game. Maybe he could have drawn some additional fouls… hopefully hes on the floor more going forward.

What we need is a shooter/scorer

Hopefully Blackshear is that guy. So far, Ware’s shot doesn’t look very good.

Also need Gorgui/Chane/Rak/Swop to own the boards.

CRP and Russ

I’ve bashed Rick often but he is not an idiot. He is a good coach but needs to step it up against Kentucky and in March. I really hate people who disrespect Russ and say he needs to play smarter. He is playing smart if nobody on your team is scoring and your a natural scorer Russ should shot the ball.

Go Cards!

by Clay Ables on Jan 1, 2012 6:05 PM EST reply actions

come on guys....

Rick was ask a quesion about russ, he shouldn’t have to lie or fluff how he thinks. We have no idea what type of attitude russ has… he may be cocky. He may take negative crit better than positive. Like said above, rick wants him to b a star so he needs him to stay hungry. Rick is around our players every day.

Also, he call chane out for getting in foul trouble…

Any post that starts out by saying Pitino is an idiot

is not worth my time to read or debate. I came here only to make it stop telling me there are new comments here.

CRP

Maybe Russ reacts well to criticism but these cracks about he set the assist records while haviing no assits was stupid. If I was Russ I would have been a little pissed If Russ wouldn’t have played we would have got blown out. Russ Smith for President

Go Cards!
