Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

An Absolute Disgrace

I cannot believe what I just witnessed, nor will I ever believe what I witnessed. We beat FIU in every concievable way and still lost (sorry if anyone gets angry at me, but I'm venting).

  • This team had about zero heart. After getting absolutely TORCHED, they responded by going three-and-out and everyone just looked so out-of-sorts.
  • The offensive line is terrible. Will Stein was sacked 6 times. SIX. By a Sun Belt defense. He was running for his life half of the time. We had 8 or 9 2nd and 16s. We can't even utilize our running backs because they are so bad.
  • Mike Sanford's playcalling was absolute horsecrap. Sweep on 4th and inches? Are you serious? You can't even give it to the fullback? You don't have the balls to even run a sneak? Oh, but our line can't block anyway, so who cares.
  • Josh Chichester was good.
  • Our defense has a threat level of about zero for forcing turnovers.
  • Why not put Bridgewater in for more than a series? He was 2-2 for 14 yards! The VA play cost us a first down. This may very well be a "throwaway season." Throw him into the fire.
  •  We couldn't convert on third down. We couldn't convert when it mattered. Last year, we could outgrind teams (see Syracuse, Connecticut). We can't run the ball on third down. Our line can't block. The 5-10 quarterback threw 43 times, guys. That's not what we want (in retrospect though, we ran a metric crap-ton of plays).
  • I want to make this clear. I don't care if you kiss the ground around the man, but he has his faults. Charlie Strong, Vance Bedford, and Mike Sanford got out coached. Charlie & Vance: We knew that TY Hilton was incredibly dangerous for about a month. He burned us twice. Please, someone, tell me why it took us 150 yards to realize that this guy can outrun the defense and to make sure the ball does end up in his hands. For Christsakes, double him, press him, do ANYTHING, ANYTHING to make sure the ball does not end up in his hands. Score after half: Louisville 7-3 FIU. See how this works, mhm? I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but Sanford, your playcalling sucks.

I am incredibly disappointed by the performance tonight. The same mental errors of the Kragthorpe era were in full force. I understand how many young players we have. But that was inexcusable. We're looking at a game that sets the program back. All of our recruits seeing our a## getting handed to us by FIU on national TV are probably laughing at us right now. There was zero growth (though I like the recieving group) between the MSU game and this one. We're looking at 4-5 wins this year. So we could win 6-8 times in 2012. Quite the step down. I hate being all doom and gloom, but that is not Louisville football, and I will NOT accept that product.

Im convinced that before Teddy B is going to get than one set of downs in a game

HHCS is going to make him earn a first down. He was one yard short tonight. Maybe against UK.

Careful man, there's a beverage here!

Agree with everything

But would add mike sanford’s run plays are especially predictable.

5 new starters on the O line is the difference between this year and last year.

On offense the talent is there at the skill positions and Stein isn’t any worse than Burke was last year.
The D held them to 17, Hilton got his but 17 points? Come on man….. you really can’t expect a lot more than that out of a defense.
Pick 6 was a killer…..
O-line not being able to run block made us one dimensional and Will isn’t the kind of QB who can make enough plays for the running game to not matter. He’s a game manager, just like Burke last year. But you can’t manage the game if you’re running for your life and the defense knows can’t run it.
Is it bad right now?
Yes…
But to say they have no heart is a bit of a stretch. Getting pounded 27-2 at home to Kentucky at the beginning of the year and then being ass raped 63-14 by Rutgers at the end of the year,….. that’s having no heart. Getting smashed at home by Pitt 35-10 is having no heart. This team kept playing till the end.
They have plenty of heart, I’ll tell you who has no heart…… the fans who filed out of the stadium in droves with 10 minutes to go in the game when we were only down 2 scores. Those kids were getting the ball back, down 7, with a minute to go. If they had no heart then they wouldn’t have even been in that position.
I like you Pig but there’s no reason to completely abandon ship, or make it seem like this is a repeat of something a Krag-ed team would have done.

Tempered expecations

Just b/c Strong is in his second year does not mean Louisville should automatically be better than his first. Yes, recruits may look at FIU as a Sun Belt team but objective football fans know better. Many of us expected FIU to give Louisville all it wanted.

The play-calling was horrible in the second half, I’ll agree to that, but we can’t expect the second-youngest team in FBS football to execute like they’re all seniors. Former walk-on Will Stein is not Brian Brohm. True freshman Teddy Bridgewater isn’t ready to carry the team. Is this Strong and Sanford’s fault? No. In fact, I think Stein’s performance this season has exceeded his talent level.

We’ll see what type of heart this team has when they respond to adversity next weekend against UK.

Overreaction

Stein threw for 2 TD’s and 349 yards. He turned losses into positive yards more than once. He made 3 or 4 really good throws. The defense clamped down like a mofo in the 2nd Half, but the damage was done when the Louisville OL played that poorly. They really really really miss Benavides… even more than I feared they would. Until he’s back or they figure out some radical ways to switch things up, this team’s only hope is gonna be Stein and his receivers and a defense that holds the other team to a reasonable amount of points. It’s the OL… period. Nothing else about this team is all that worrisome.

by CardsRuleBE on Sep 10, 2011 1:13 AM EDT reply actions

Stein did well under the circumstances and generally-- in fact Strong indicated that.

But he was forced to throw also—the fact he did with no picks in that situation is amazing—but still losing.

Sanford needs to go 70/30 pass/rush and mix in more pass action even in the running

by frankpos on Sep 10, 2011 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions

This is not Stein's fault at all. He did all he could.

Here’s what I am saying though.

UK-enigma at this point- I’ll go 75/25 loss
UNC-Loss 75/25
Marshall- 60/40 win
Cincy-Loss 75/25
Rutgers-60/40 win
Syracuse- Enigma at this point probably loss if this keeps up
@WVU- 90/10 loss
Pitt-80/10 loss
UConn- 50/50 win
USF-90/10 loss
Seriously. We’re looking at a 3 or 4 win team.

We arent going to win these games if our line can’t block, straight up. If we lose to UK, then that will probably set usup for 1-3. If that happens, I think that this is a throwaway seasonto get all of the young guys in there and make them improve, because at that point, this team’s not going anywhere.

Pig, I agree dude. We can sit here and PRAISE Stein like we want to, but whats a career game for him if he cant get the win.

I feel like me and you are the only ones who agree that Teddy (our most hyped player coming into this season) only gets one series a game. DOO WE NOT REALIZE THAT WE JUST GAVE A TEAM THEIR FIRST WIN OVER A BCS TEAM!

Sit Ubu sit, good dog!

If you don't have pass protection or holes created by the o-line is does not matter who you have at the skilled positions, the offense will suffer.

30-43, 350 yrds, 2 tds, 1 int

If you put any other name to those stats everyone thinks that was a good game played by the QB. Everyone needs to quit worrying about the QB position and realize really where we need to improve at.

teddy killed

its obvious that our major weakness is our o-line. what kills me is that people are upset that hccs isnt throwing our prized qb recruit to the wolves with zero expierince and continuity amongst the very unit that will be 100% accountable for him or any of our qb’s to be successful. do u think hccs is dumb.. hes not going to kill our ’’FUTURE. he will show patience and instill confidence in tb.

I peronally

believe that Strong will run with Stein for the KY game and if that ends up a loss we will begin to see Bridgewater a lot more. I think thats going to be the turning point for this season. A win will be a big moral booster, a loss and its a throw away season.

If you guys are using the UK game as a litmus test for the season...

Than UL just isn’t any good. Because UK isn’t any good either. And I wouldn’t say that UL lacks heart, I would say that UL, like UK, just isn’t all that good. Both teams are in for a long year. Just thank God that UK is the only SEC team that UL plays this year. UK is going to get killed by SEC teams, and so would UL. When does basketball season start?

Oh, stop it. We knew before the game that he could outrun the defense, it didn’t take us 150 yards to figure that out. The second time he burned us, we had four guys around him and he just flat ran away from them all and THEN caught the ball. I think the defense is to be commended for not letting him burn us half a dozen more times. Hilton is damned good; we will be hearing his name all year. And FIU is a lot better team than we’ve given them credit for. As someone posted in another thread, their performance in the coming weeks will probably take away a lot of the sting of losing to them. Don’t be surprised if they finish the season ranked.

Our O-line did not get the job done, primarily because they are young and inexperienced, and the one senior isn’t supposed to be a starter. When Benavides gets back, Kupper moves to LT, and Hernandez takes a seat on the bench, we’ll be a lot better. I just hope Mario’s staph infection is not MRSA.

My fiance is a medical student, she tells me that it's a bacterial thing, not viral so tere is a treatment for it.

You take a steady dose of antibiotics and you have to have it “drained” consistently. It’s a pretty nasty process. Obviously it’s a pretty bad deal if he’s been out this long….

by Chick-Stratino'sUrDaddy on Sep 10, 2011 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, it's bacterial, but it can be very hard to treat

It’s resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat staph infections.

More serious MRSA infections are becoming harder to treat. Your doctor will follow guidelines about which antibiotics should be used.

Other treatments may be needed for more serious infections. If you are not already in the hospital, you may be admitted. Treatment may involve:

* Fluids and medications given through a vein
* Kidney dialysis (if kidney failure occurs)
* Oxygen
