Edgar Sosa suffers severe leg injury
I won't lie, this is pretty tough to watch:
Edgar Sosa suffered an apparently severe leg injury recently while playing for the Dominican Republic alongside fellow former Cardinal Francisco Garcia. Sosa, who was trying to improve his NBA prospects by playing for coach John Calipari and with several NBA players, was injured near the end of a lopsided victory over Panama.
I don't care what your feelings on Sosa were when he was playing for us, neither Good Edgar nor Bad Edgar deserved anything like this. I sincerely hope the man finds a way to recover from this injury with all due speed and finds himself playing basketball again as soon as possible.
Godspeed, Edgar.

Holy sh!t
Really sad for Edgar. Not only trying to get a spot in the NBA, but playing alongside his idol.
All the best, Sosa.

Praying for you, Edgar.
It looks like the exact same injury that Eric Wood had. The bone just snapped in half. Eric came back healthy, let’s just hope the same for Edgar.

WOW
That was hard to watch…. Sad to see Sosa have that happen to him…
Don't know if this is the same video
Here you go, for posterity’s sake:
From SportsGrid.com
John Calipari looked like he was about to lose it when he saw how bad it was.

i f#€<\ng hate calamri
No reason Sosa should even be in the game up 24 in the last 5 seconds. Why not develop talent and take your stars out? Oh that’s right, you have the ability to coach to do that.

you cannot seriously blame Calipari for that injury......that's lame......REALLY lame
tell me any player who is worth his salt that doesnt play all out all the time…….and any coach who doesnt put the players on the floor for a specific reason.

Guys, I am sincerely sorry about what happened to Edgar
He was playing his guts out and was really showing what it takes to be a top flight player.

calapari is at fault b/c.....
He is notorious for only playing 7… He nearly lost wall two years ago when he was up 20+ at the end of the game. I just hate that you aren’t developing players and you’re risking injury.
by 859Cardguy on Sep 5, 2011 9:46 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
tell that to all the other coaches who do the same thing.....
He is not Coaching the DR to “Develop” players. He is coaching them to get them into the Olympics. Understand your subject matter better.

That's some pretty relevant subject matter right there....
Ask yourself this Greg, if UK happens to be winning by 24 points against any team this season, with 40 seconds left to play…… and Marquis Teague’s leg ends up looking like that, what would you think about him being in the game at an obviously meaningless juncture?

The same way I felt about injuries that happened to other players in the past that
on the face seem like they are easily avoidable coaching from the internet.
Keith Bogans 2003
Sam Bowie 1981
I know we can sit back and look at this now and say why was he in there?
But let me ask you this, if he had hit another three pointer from half court with time running out, would we be discussing him being in there or would we be discussing the miraculous shot he made?
Injuries are a risk everyone takes. In hindsight, they may look like they were absolutely avoidable, however none of us were there and none of us know what the situation is on that team or for Edgar Sosa. If its me, and I am a basketball player, I want to be playing basketball. Second guessing a coach or a player, while interesting and fun for the fans, is impossible to do with any accuracy, or understanding of intent.

Why would anyone celebrate a three point shot from half court when Sosa’s team was up 24 points? Not suggesting this is all on Calipari but that’s a bad argument.

youre right, the analogy sucks......
but no more so than saying Calipari’s coaching got the kid’s leg broke…..
I know it stings with UL fans, to be honest, ANY fan that doesn’t get angry about that type of injury is not really in tune with the game. I just don’t see the correlation between Cal’s coaching and the injury.

i think everyone would just be shocked at the shot....there is no meaning other than that.
they were leading the game.
his piont seems to pertain to starters…wall was a starter..if sosa was a backup then yeah he’s gonna be playing when time runs out to save the starters stamina
i wanna get chocolate wasted!!!!!
Moot point altogether then b/c Sosa was a starter on the DRNT
Blaming Calipari directly for Sosa’s injury isn’t fair but addressing why Calipari would keep important players in the game during a blowout is.

I agree
Sosa shouldn’t have been in the game. But he should also realize that this is a situation where you dribble out the clock. Both coach and player took avoidable risks.

I dislike Calipari as much as the next guy, but you can't blame an injury on a coach. Injuries are a part of the game and unfortunately Edgar got hurt bad. Best of luck to him on the road to a full recovery.

Couldn't watch the video...
Unlike some of our other lightning rod players in the past few years, I always really thought Sosa was a fundamentally good guy who had his heart in the right place, who just needed to mature into his potential. It seemed like he was able to do that a bit in Italy last year, hopefully this injury won’t prevent him from reaching the goals he set for himself.
On a side note, I did see the picture, and I was reminded yet again why I hate those protective flak jackets and leg protectors Nike gives to players.
Force equals mass times acceleration and just like in football, protecting players from a low level of injury, only encourages them to throw themselves around the court harder and harder, which in my opinion increases the chances that freak injuries like this will occur.
Calipari shouldn't have had him in.
As a Louisville fan going to the legends vs domican game in the yum center he sat garcia horford and sosa the whole second half. Up by 25 with real competition, he should not have his best point guard in. Easily avoidable if Calipari had the same mindset to piss off Louisville fans as he had during that game in the Yum! Center. Praying for you sosa

This is almost hilarious.......
You guys really think the man thinks of anything else but winning? He gets paid to win. That team needs to win to get into the Olympics…..end of story.
Why don’t you ask Sosa how he felt about the situation? Tell me HE didn’t want to be out there. It’s a competitors mentality. Both for coaches and players. The only time a player does not want to be on the court is when the game is over. And then some of them still want to be out there.
You really need to try and understand the mentality of it. Sosa was becoming a bigger part of that team, Calipari was trying to develop that to make that team a winner.

Up 24 with 40 seconds left, Greg, I think the game was already won.

People
I dislike Calamari as much as the next guy. I however don’t think there is any way he can be blamed for Sosa’s injury. We can say that Sosa should have been benched etc., but in the end things work out the way they work out. Even I don’t think there was any malicious intent. So with all that said the one thing I do want is a way for Card fans to wish him a speedy recovery. Considering the poor guy took so much shit while being a Card he deserves something from us… ?? am I wrong????
Damn
I hate to see that happen to anybody, especially a former cardinal. That really, really sucks big time.
Sosa seems like a good guy
and I hope he recovers from this. My kids will always be fond of him ‘cheezing’ for the camera during the Arizona game. Get well Sosa.
Hope for a full and speedy recovery for Edgar.
You guys arguing about Calipari and whether Sosa “should have been in” is ridiculous. Sometimes your starters are in late, sometimes not. No coach automatically always leaves his best players in to develop chemistry, leadership or whatever else. No coach automatically always benches all his starters when up by 20.
Blaming a coach is stupid in this case. But defending coaching strategy with the attempt to “justify” what happened is also stupid in this case. jch24 and lvl1 nailed it in this case. Injuries happen. This was a freak accident that nobody, even the DR national team’s competition wanted. But it happened. I hope Edgar can use this as time to learn an important life-lesson about how to deal with adversity, coming back stronger than before and not get caught in the “Why me?” trap.
We love you Edgar. Rest up. Get well. And get back to ball’n.
severe leg injury?
Edgar Sosa suffered an apparently severe leg injury a fractured tibia/fibia
Fixed. I’m no doctor and I can’t see through the sock, but I could see enough to know that leg snapped in half and would be surprised if it wasn’t a compound fracture. Hope he recovers well and fast! 6(+) weeks for it to heal at the very least. Would imagine longer since they’d likely have to put in pins and screws and such…
Reminded me of the supperbowl when Tim Krumrie’s leg snapped – that turned my stomach way back when enough so that I remembered his name and I’ve NEVER followed pro sports.
No blood evident in the photo
I don’t think it’s a compound fracture. But yes, it’s pretty evident that both bones were snapped. Part of me wants to know how it happened, but I don’t think I can stomach watching the video.

Looked like just came down on it wrong.
Kind of seems like a freak accident.

looked to me like
someone came down on it. that’s the only possible explanation too – short of him having some weak bones or some kind of bone marrow deficiency or – God forbid – cancer… Interwebz are WAY TOO slow for me to try to find other angles or anything either though.
