Where have I seen this logo before?
A 2000 and 2001 graduate of the University of Louisville, I moved to St. Louis after graduation for a job. Still here, I may be the only person who reads the newspaper, but I do. Browsing the Post-Dispatch's website, a familiar logo in a story about local high school sports grabbed my eye:

I know I've seen this guy somewhere, but I just can't quite put my finger on it.
Alton High School is just across the Mississippi River north of town in Illinois, and apparently the home of shameless mascot thieves. That, or our beloved Cardinal bird is really an Alton Redbird and we've been fooling ourselves all these years.

Flipping images is a common way to skirt copyright enforcement
As the bots that may scan for such a thing don’t always figure it out.
Here's the Colerain Cardinals

And the same school who's nobody head coach
said UofL is no longer welcome there to recruit. (Based of us pulling a scholarship of a kid who was still taking visits after we learned about the 3 scholarship APR hit)

That's not the only one...
the Louisville (Kansas) highschool – I believe – has the same exact mascott… They’re not the only ones either…
There are many theives and probably why UofL has differentiated.
This happens all over the country.
High schools often use collge mascots. My high school was the Bruins and our colors were exactly the same as UCLA, and the mascot was very similar.
There’s also an FCS school named Grambling State University whose logo is nearly identical to Georgia’s, except with a yellow background instea of white.

Consider it an honor
25 years ago you would have never seen that. Its like a band covering a song its is the highest form of flattery.
Mayfield in West KY did the same thing.

My senior year
we played Mayfield in the All “A” Classic (basketball) and chanted, “You’re not Louisville.” Not very clever, but the next year as I was riding the elevator up in Unitas, a couple of dudes in Mayfield sweatshirts saw my sweatshirt they remembered us chanting that at them. They thought it was pretty funny. I’d also like to add that we played and beat OJ Mayo led Rose Hill Academy. We were pretty tough on him that night. He was only an 8th grader. We were dicks. I think he’s probably ok with it now…

If im not mistaken
A lot of colleges allow high schools etc to use their logo for a fee. I cant remember what article I read years ago but I think it was about a high school using the k-state logo and the college leasing it to them for something like $1.00 a year.
Anyways the moral to my story is that it may not always be copyright infringement.
Now the reversed / yellow card logo is clearly just skirting the laws
It's not copyright infringement if the bird has yellow eyes because of hepatitis. Don't you guys know anything?

My hometown high school in Winchester, Kentucky
George Rogers Clark uses this logo as well. It’s on the marquee as you drive into campus. But they use the St. Louis Arizona cardinal head on their football helmets. I’m surprised they don’t throw in the Ball State cardinal for good measure. I think it’s funny that my high school uses the UofL cardinal so prominently since 95% of the kids there are C*t fans.
"To win the game is great. To play the game is greater. But to love the game is greatest of all."
My HS in London, KY
Was the South Laurel Cardinals. The logo was different, but also stolen… South Laurel and St. Louis Cardinals…HEY, we can steal that! However, the mascot at games was the exact cardinal bird costume that UofL uses. Bought it from the same supplier.
