I have always been a huge supporter of the Big East but I am worried right now that UofL is committed to staying in a league that has no future. We all know UConn, WVU and Rutgers will go anywhere else if they get the call and I can't blame them for looking out for their best interest. Kind of like I am bitter at SU and Pitt but they did what is best for them and I can't hold that against them. Anyway, I just hope Tom and Donald are looking at other options right now instead of going balls to wall in saving the BE. If we get stuck in some commitment to the BE we could end up getting screwed if others bolt. I will still purchase my season football tickets no matter where we end up but I am really not excited about going to football games against the armed forces and ECU. Please kick me if I have to watch this year in and year out. This league will not be worthy of an AQ bid to the BCS. If we end up stuck in the new look Big East I think all our sports will take a step backwards. The conference brand name is not going to mean much more then CUSA and top recruits in all sports may look at schools in stronger leagues than ours before giving us a visit even though all our facilities are top notch. One argument I have heard for sticking in the Big East is that it would be great for getting good basketball recruits but come on, we recruit nationally and we had a Jersey connection well before joining the Big East. Our basketball team will be fine no matter where we go so please don't stick around the BE because of basketball.
Tonight I am really hoping UofL and our enemy over in WVU get invited to the Big 12. I know there are a lot of problems the Big 12 needs to work out first but if things stabelize and they add BYU this would be an exciting league. Basketball in the new Big 12 would have 3 teams in Louisville, Kansas and Texas that could be in the top 10 any given year. Then imagine what football would be like for us with some mix of Texas, Oklahoma, Ok St, Texas Tech, Mizz, WVU, BYU, Kansas, Iowa St, Baylor and Kansas St. coming to PJCS every year. Wow, we could actually have college game day visit campus once Charlie rebuilds the team. Every Big 12 home game would sell out and fans would actually be in their seats by kickoff watching games instead of socializing, I just hope we can still buy booze in the Big 12. Also the thought of playing in a Big 12 championship football game would be pretty cool, for some reason I always enjoyed watching that game each December.
Now what are the chance this could happen? From what I have read so far the Big 12 definitely wants to get back to 10 schools after A&M leaves and some want to get back up to 12. It appears BYU is number one target and UofL and WVU were on the radar before the shake up this weekend so I would assume we are still high up on their list. If by chance Mizz leaves for the SEC they could also go after TCU or Cincy as well. I know everyone has different opinions and scenarios but I really hope to see headlines that say bye bye BE, hello Big 12.
One last unrelated topic, an article on ESPN tonight mentions the Big 12 would even consider Rutgers. When did Rutgers get so popular that they are in conversations about the Big 10, ACC and Big 12. They have always been a place holder in the Big East, their facilities and athletic teams are sub-par and the NY and NJ markets could care less about the school, I just don't understand.
